That was my problem, too, at first. I've since rigged up a fluorescent lamp on an adjustable lazypod over my workstation. So I can draw and take pictures of my drawing in a bright space, whatever time of day. Not as ideal as natural lighting, but it's better than nothing.

I actually started to feel a little bad about myself being just an "absolute beginner"/"casual creative". Right now, art for me is a hobby that I hope to one day develop into something more. I have a full time job, but I still manage to carve out a couple of hours at night to practice something. This is my second year partaking in Inktober, and though I have fallen behind both years, (full time job, family, life) I manage to catch up. I DON'T GIVE UP! And yes, I do celebrate when it's done, because I proved to myself that I can learn something new, improve my techniques, and create something, if not everyday, then damn near close. And when it's over, I'll go back to doing what I was doing before: creating something, if not everyday, then damn near close. :)

What do I do after InkTober? I watch an awesome video by my buddy Mark Campbell that gives me sage advise, thats what! Excellent and something I actually hadn't thought much about. I confess I wasn't fully committed to the full 31 days but I did manage 15 ink drawings. More than double what I did for last year's InkTober. The time I needed to set aside for even that many was considerable. I love the idea of realizing I can carve off that time in the future for some other project important to me. Great video my friend!

Thank you, Steve. I admit, it's been a huge treat to see your work on Instagram during this challenge. It's been a huge influence on me and my own work, and I can already tell I'm going to be trying new things and new approaches, just based on seeing your work. This was sheer fun for me this year, and I never felt it was too much or burdensome until the very end (I've had some really annoying dental issues which are still going on, but which also influenced a few pieces in Inktober, too!), so finding time when I wasn't feeling 100% was definitely tough. Thank you so much for watching this one and for your kind, thoughtful words. Grateful for you, my friend. God bless! :)

Thanks for this... I was just wondering what November was going to hold for me. I completed my first Inktober challenge successfully, 31 drawings, 31 days, no bullsh!t. Congratulations to those that finished. You know the thrill, the pain, the despair, and eventual elation you faced as you met the challenge head on and came out the other side triumphant.

I skipped it this year but I will always remember my 2017 experience. It was grueling because not only was I doing the drawings I made videos of each day, some of the videos were elaborate. It was a great experience however. Congrats on finishing each day! You are one of the most ingenious artists I know, so clever with an uncommon inventiveness rarely seen in any medium by any artist.

Very inspirational Mr. Cambell! I drew every single day during the challenge for my channel! And I now have a half way filled book with inked illustrations, which I haven't done in a looong time, I mostly do digital. Now I can take my illustrations with me, out and about, and show it off to people! This challenge has developed good habits in me, and I can't wait for what the future holds!

I started drawing again this year after many years of mainly doing other stuff. Since I started with a 100 day challenge I actually had to ask myself that question at the end of my challenge and I decided to just keep drawing with the goal of making a comic in the end. Inktober was part of that continuation and I pushed myself quite a bit out of my comfort zone with it. I didn't do the prompts, just came up with new ideas on my own every day and that was probably the most draining part. Normally I allow myself to work on drawings for several days, so I don't have to come up with so many ideas back to back. It was really fun though and I managed to make it to the end without falling behind. What comes next? Well, I continue with my drawing to do list - next month it will be mostly focused on character design. It's all fairly open-ended and my daily drawing routine is something that makes me profoundly happy. I definitely want to keep going in that direction. As for categories, I used to be in the casual group, although my skills were rather "'meh" in my own judgement. I thought of myself as a beginner, but quickly realised that this wasn't quite accurate. Turns out I am better at this than I remembered! After half a year of daily drawing I fit squarely in the last category and was well prepared for inktober! I think your observations were quite accurate and your message is spot on with this! I will definitely keep going.

Thank you for sharing this video. I am a mix of all three. Drawing is extremely hard for me so most of my drawings look like a kindergartner drew them, but I am extremely creative and use that creativity in other challenges like ICAD and an upcoming daily art journaling challenge . I also use it, like you said, in cooking and other areas of my life. Now that I have participated in several different challenges, I get some of my supplies ready in advance, look at the prompt list, and wait with anticipation for a new one to begin. Thanks again for sharing. You have great observation skills and a great way of explaining what you’ve observed.

That's a great point, I'm glad you said that! It's motivating to hear that you can continue on what you want to do.I pretty much failed the challenge because I'm still working on "Slice" even after October ended (better than what I did last year)...I'm totally the "creative casual"..so timing myself has been difficult . Though, I've always wanted to make animation clips or work on more videos on my channel with art. Since I don't have a studio, I can't make oil paintings after it's gotten so cold out, and I guess that's a part of what bums me out- along with not having inspiration, diversity of artists, and feeling tired from retail. After this challenge, I wouldn't mind continuing setting aside time on what I've been making that's small, and work on commissions when I need too. It would be a fun challenge that I need to stick too. Thank you for the video, it was inspirational!

Im so happy I completed this challenge! It gave me the opportunity to make so many fanart for a show I am into right now! Plus I got back into traditional art thanks to this challenge. But this is the first time I actually finished inktober thanks to the fact I do art part time as a job and my full time job requires me to stay at home. I was blessed with time and I learned to harness my creativity to even make a "bad" drawing. Yes, if you make one discipline, it can bleed to other disciplines. Like how parents always teach their kids to do chores---it teaches them not only responsibility but also discipline. I hope now I can compile my inktober fanarts into a mini zine to be sold at a local event in the winter. Nice talk sir. I loved your coffee breaks.

Thank you for this video Mark. Last year I was asking myself this very question at the end of Inktober and as you know it led to me starting my 365 day challenge. It's been hard keeping up with drawing every day, I haven't managed to keep up to date with making the art tour videos because of work (although I do hope to catch up with them at some point) but I have learned so much and it's amazing to see that you can fit in the time to do something if you are committed to it. Today is day 306 and while I am looking forward to when I don't HAVE to draw every day and I can take a day off when I have too many other things on I still fully intend to continue using my time to be productive and make art on a regular basis even if it's not every single day :)

Thank you for sharing your experience, Diane. Your work throughout Inktober has been wonderful and I sincerely believe that you, of all people I've seen recently, are going to have the biggest benefit from the incredible dedication you have in investing time and passion into your work. It shows in both the spirit of the drawings you do and with the delicate hand you are able to create your work with. Your personality is all over your work, and that may be one of the hardest things for artists - especially those younger artists out there - to be able to capture. Unfortunately, my drawings often exhibit how weird my personality is, which is both good and bad, at times! LOL!! Cheers and I'm looking forward to seeing what's next from you! Cheers!

Most people do Inktober just to get some extra exposure. My first Inktober (2017) helped me to return to drawing (and not just talking about me drawing), it helped me to maintain the discipline to draw something regularly and helped me to realise how much I used to limit myself by trying to achieve perfection. I was really glad I completed the challenge. This year I stopped drawing for Inktober after few days. I no longer needed the daily push to get me drawing, I do that now anyway. And mainly, this year's Inktober was a distraction from my drawing rather than helping me to focus on it.

Hi, I love your videos! Sometimes I just put them on to listen whilst I draw. I was curious, I mostly use colored pencils & markers for color, but really want to try some inking techniques like you use. Was wondering if you, or anyone, might have suggestions about, What kind of ink do you use, what would you recommend? I often see India, Sumi, & Liquitex acrylic ink, but don't know what's best. What's best for applying, a brush, or nib/dip-pen? Also, do I need JUST the ink, or does it need to be diluted or mixed with something? Is watercolor paper best, or something else? I know that's a lot of questions, but I appreciate any advice anyone might have. :) Thanks for your great videos & advice!!
@MDCampbell6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your time and interest in the work I do here, shannon bryant! As for your questions about drawing or painting in ink, here's what I use on a regular basis: INK: Windsor & Newton drawing ink, Liquitex colored inks, Dr. Ph Martin's matte ink, and Rotring inks, and Higgins. PENS: I have a large variety of dip pens and nibs that I use ranging from expensive to cheap. BRUSHES: I have a selection of watercolor brushes dedicated just for ink, so when I clean them I can use harsher cleaners like alcohol. Also, diluting is great for getting thinner washes of ink, but to be honest, I rarely ever dilute. As for PAPER: I use watercolor paper for the toothiness of the surface, which I like, but I also use Bristol for the smooth surface, when the mood strikes. Basically, the best thing to do would be just make a minimal purchase, if you don't have these things already, and just start using them. It won't take long before you discover which products you enjoy and which you don't. For me, I don't enjoy using markers, but I have gone out and purchased some to try them. I'm still getting used to them after not really using them seriously for many, many years. It's an interesting challenge for me, for sure! lol! I hope this helps! Cheers! :)

this video is coming up on a year old now so perhaps this is moot to say, though i do see at least one other recent comment so i guess at least i'm not the only one with an Opinion late to the game. but while i think the message of this mindset on the whole is helpful, and certainly well-intentioned, your examples of the pyramids, the eiffel tower, and harry potter aren't perfect and potentially counter to the point you want to make. the first two took thousands and thousands of people's labor, most of which was involuntary, and JKR wrote harry potter while deep in depression and poverty as a way to cope (plus there certainly wasn't social media and phones in the 80s/90s, at least not how we use it now lol). that being said, if we're going to roll with those metaphors/examples i think a big takeaway implied there is SUPPORT NETWORKS. you mentioned your facebook group, and how everyone encouraged everyone else. i think a lot of folks doing inktober, notably the consummate professionals, tend to isolate themselves during the month to do their work. even if they post to social media as they go, that's mostly one sided feedback and the audience only sees the finished product, not the struggles and labor that went into it. so having someplace to vent frustrations as well as sharing your triumphs is super duper important, and if i do the challenge this year i'm going to consciously keep that in mind because i haven't in previous years, and have yet to complete a full month so far. so thank you for that little jog in cognitive skills!! i have a lot of new perspectives on tackling this beast of a thing because of your other videos on inktober as well, and this was a good addition.

Really excellent reply, cubesprite. Yes, this is an older video, but I think it will still hold resonance after the upcoming Inktober challenge is over, again. Sure, the examples in the video may or may not be pertinent, but I think you're right about the importance of that support network. Thank you so much, again, for the time given to this. I'm always so grateful to hear counterpoints and other perspectives, especially on older videos. I really appreciate that! Cheers! ~ Mark

I'm actually a writer first and foremost, with art being more of a hobby. So next month for me is going to be NaNoWriMo.
