I have been on fiber for a week here in South Africa. 200/20 costs me $75 per month on uncapped data plan. I was on copper vdsl 20/5 and the difference for me is huge as I can now stream 8k content where in the past I could only do 4k 1440p. Any faster I would get buffering. My isp does not offer more than 200meg at this time as fiber is relatively new in my area. Ping was 35ms and now on fiber 13ms. Keep your vids coming as I always enjoy your content.

I have 100 mbps down and 35 mbps up. I am the only one using it and it does all that I need it to do for streaming services in 4k. The only reason that I could see needing more upload speed is if I desired very fast video uploads. I don’t game, so I don’t know what is required for that. The ping times that you’re getting on fiber there might be helpful, assuming that your computer is also quick.

Brett, great video. Glad you have fiber to your home. You alluded to the difference between GPON and active ethernet fiber. I am not a pro, just someone who finds this all very interesting. At my home I am fortunate enough to have access to both types of fiber. A local company has active ethernet and a local teleco has GPON. Being the nerd that I am I subscribe to both. In all honesty I really haven't seen a difference in speed, ping, etc. I will say the local company with active ethernet has far more subscribers as they started fiber optic service quite a long time ago and offer excellent customer service. So the GPON that the local telco offers has far fewer subscribers and therefore is not fully loaded. Keep posting your great videos!

I'm paying for $54 per month for a 300/300 connection here in the Philippines. And yes, it's quite stable. I've never gotten speeds less than 300mbps. Yeah, as long as you get a decent plan here, you get decent speeds. Still, due to the free nationwide speedboost our Telco gives, even people that are on the $26 plan get 200mbps.

Like "coaxial" cable internet, PON fiber internet has an aspect of shared media. Where many cable modem subscribers share a single cable trunk, several fiber internet subscribers will share a single OLT port. Because the amount of bandwidth shared can be much higher (eg 10 Gbps) and the number sharing might be lower (eg 32), the user may perceive a dedicated connection. Each subscriber does have their own fiber going all the way to the splitter, and that is an improvement. However, all of the subscribers on the same splitter and OLT port ("PON segment") have fibers that all receive the same download pulses. When a neighbor downloads, his downloads are going to the ONTs of the whole PON segment, and all but his ignore this. In this way the other users may decrease your available bandwidth. One may be able to negotiate for an OLT port that is not split and shared with others, likely at a higher cost.

I live in Chicago suburbs. I'd love to have fiber, but my choices are limited to Comcast or AT&T. Since my municipality has a "Franchise" agreement with Comcast, I have to take the "triple play" whether I want it or not. Fail. AT&T has fiber available, but it's 3248' to the "Cabinet" and I'd have to pay to have the fiber installed the whole way. So for now, I'm stuck with a "bonded pair" and iffy service. Glad to see you have great options, that speed and personal control is worth it.

This is very common. It's called TPIA. (Third Party internet Access) The broadband company that owns the infrastructure sells access known as "White Label Wholesale". The ISP buys the bandwidth in bulk at a very cheap rate. Then resells it to their customers. A lot of people are provided internet by these companies and don't even know it.

Utopia fiber options where not available to me. However about a month after buying my home Google fiber became available to me. The one huge benefit of going to Google fiber over Utopia or any other provider is that you do not pay for installation or equipment. I recently was given the option to update my Google fiber router to two Google WiFi routers at no cost to me. One as the main modem and the other as a mesh access point. That's a savings of about $200.

Cable had too many customers on one line and everything slowed right down when everyone was home at night and between internet and tv my bill was over $200 a month. Used to pay $34 (converted from Php) for an ADSL internet broadband with DL/UL speeds of up to 15/0.5 Mbps (no data cap) but then our ISP decided to upgrade other people's internet in our area to fiber/vdsl EXCEPT FOR US. Besides, we've been getting sh*tty service from them (an intermittent connection that lasted for about a month that ended up to no connection at all. Been contacting them to fix our line or better yet, migrate our line to fiber, but got no feedback from them) Our neighbors were getting fiber/vdsl connection with symmetric speeds but we were stuck with ADSL. So what I did was switch to another ISP and they gave us the best fiber internet connection. We pay about $38 for a 35/30 Mbps (no data cap) internet connection. I have no regrets about switching (Edit: I know $38 is still expensive for a 35/30 Mbps connection but right now, that's pretty cheap in my country. that is all they can provide for their subscribers right now. But hopefully, after they make network upgrades we would get a better and faster connection for the same price 🤞🤞🤞)

Cable can be almost as good as Fiber these day.. Most of the problems you described were specific to your line or ISP in your area ( tho fiber doesn't have these problems regardless of area so it's better ) ... The only exception being the bad upload speed but cable companies are working on that and many will offer same up and download speeds in the next 2-3 year spectrum has it set to 2025 nationwide.. ... Also these day wifi can reach 1Gig or higher internet it must be wifi 6 and some other factors but it can be done... I can do 1.1Gbps on my wifi with my tablet..and like 1Gig-900 on my laptop...

I guess I will be one of the very few people who has negative comments about fiber internet. I will try to brief if possible. I have fiber internet now, supposed to be 1gbs service. For the most part, web surfing is ok but not blazing fast like it claims to be, but satisfactory. The big problem is streaming. Way too damn much buffering before playing a video on almost any streaming service and that's not supposed to be like that. I have a roku device and when I had cable internet there was no buffer issues or anything. Now I have 1 gbs fiber internet and I have buffer issues like crazy. I mean what the hell!!!. Yes I was paying more for cable internet but I never had buffering issues. I have a technician with my fiber internet coming to check things out on Tuesday and see if he knows what the hell is going on. But worse case scenario I will go back to cable internet. Cheaper is not always better. But again I am probably one of the 1 out of 500 people who fiber internet might not work for them. And that's a damn shame.

In Montreal, I currently have a contract (commercial) with 1Gb coaxial and it's been pretty good but they've recently gone with a dedicated "smart" modem same as your Xfinity provider but they've now limited their speed to 400 Mbps so when my contract is up next year, I'll look to their competitor that does have fiber and offers up to 1.5 Gb. Only issue is, I've never liked dealing with them and never thought I'd go back. So if my current ISP does not want to continue my offering, they will lose me.

But Frontier fiber was just expanded into my area. 3 times the speed for less than half the price. Definitely switching! But the main reason is, I live in SW Florida, and I just went without internet for over 2 weeks after power was restored, because hurricane Ian destroyed the cables. If fiber is buried, it should work as long as we have power. Plus Xfinity’s customer service was horrible

In the U.K, we don't rent or pay extra for the equipment, it all comes in with the cost of your provider. Most of us use a system called Fibre to the Cabinet, which is fibre going to a roadside cabinet and then coper wires from that to the house, the router/modem is then provided by ISP. In places where there is pure fibre, that is still an all-in-one payment, even the networks that allows different providers on them. There is fibre being laid where i live at the moment, I doubt it will get to my street for a few months yet, but that is again just a one off payment of £29 a month for 100Mb/S, but they have a strange system as uploads is 10Mb/s, need to pay a extra tenner a month to get uploads the same speed as down. The fastest download is 2000Mb/s, but that will be £99 a month i get 34Mb/s on my fibre to the cabinet and to be honest that is fine for me, If I can get a good offer at the end of my contract I will stay where I am.

It's surprising here in Malaysia we have had FTTH (Fiber to the Home) since like 2011, and no shared FTTP (Fiber to the Post) which some countries do, where's it's like fiber to a certain point, the copper to the home However, having a bunch of ISP options is what we do not enjoy, it's pretty much a monopoly of the big 2, and both are shady. Hope that changes soon. Btw, how much did you pay to get the network infrastructure permanently affixed in the house? That's interesting as we do not have that sort of option here

Sorry to tell you Brett, but trust me your line is split. The difference is there is pleeeenty more bandwidth to share with those around you, unlike copper internet. So you don’t notice it when everyone around you is using. That DZS ont they have installed is GPON and usually split in 1-32/64 or 128, meaning one port in the node is split either 32,64 or 128 times.... just depends on your provider.

News flash. Your fiber isnt dedicated either. It's split at the hub. Before that you're sharing bandwidth with 15 or 31 other people depending on how they split the fiber. Most are a 1:32 split.

As a cable provider for one of the top brands, your provider wasn't very good. Our modem rental is free so that we can fix it when needed. Or replace it for free. This saves the customer money. The speed were about the same, but we were a bit cheaper on the price. Our wifi rental is $5 a month. Unless you bundled, our internet only was $60 per month. After one year, it went up to $80. Our services are run through fibre, just not into the home. I have problems with your installation of the fiber. There is no ground block protecting your home. Going in through your air intake is tacky. You should be grounded to power like phone and cable. If power comes up that fiber line, everything inside connected to it is fried. The tap were your coaxial line inside the hub there is not shared!! What Joe in the house behind you doesn't effect your internet speeds in your home. This does effect providers like the phone companies. We have no data limits either.

Having 1Gbit unlim over CAT5e for $6/month, about the same speedtest with 1ms ping, $70 Mikrotik hEX PoE (+ AP)... Maybe just lucky to live in Ukraine) Anyways the point is - fiber only cuts it for long distance p2p, otherwise no point. Decent SFP module would cost more than my whole setup not to mention anything more hardcore.

I’m getting 2gb fiber this week and I’m wondering if I hook up a 2.5gb hub switch should I connect the fiber modem to that first and hook up my eero WiFi to the hub so I can get the full speed with the wired network? I plan on getting a 2.5gb usb c adapter for my iMac so I can get get fast speed Most wired connections are gigabit on wifi hubs

Dedicated fiber is very expensive. There's a optical splitter in that handhole. If you had dedicated it would cost you $500+ a month.
@Todd.T
@Todd.T Жыл бұрын
And it would still go back to another PON splitter. All the bandwidth is QOS and limited by the ONT MAC. People see a single fiber at their house and assume they have a dedicated connection. I like to ask where they think it is dedicated to and get some great answers.
@mibik279
@mibik279 Жыл бұрын
@@Todd.T I guess people think that companies would give them dedicated internet when it costs over $20k a mile to build out. most people think it comes from a mile away when a co could be 15+ miles away.

Fiber!!!! I have nearly the exact setup with internet coming in then to the Nest Wifi then to an unmanaged switch. I pay for 1GB down. My wifi speeds on my Note 20 Ultra range from 200mbs to 150mbs with an access point. Those are decent speeds yet I believe it can get better. Anybody out there on hints or tips to improve those wifi speeds?

@@PhillyDjHook I've tried that about "200" times and like Brett, on my Nest router, I'm getting around 895 mbs and 850 upload. So I'm assuming the connection is great up to that point. Fiber coming soon to me, cant wait to ditch spectrum as they have such an awful connection here where I am, probably anywhere really. Speeds are consistent, ping is god awful, and online gameplay is random at best eg: shoot first die first, rbg games: getting cc'd in fights even though on your end you know you had cc resist, and its just not that cheap compared to what fiber prices are/can be

What's the point is spending all that money on Fiber if you only want 1gbps? Fiber is meant for speeds beyond 1gbps. This is why all my local ISP's don't offer Fiber under 1.5gbps. I can't even get TPIA to a fiber infrastructure under 1.5gbps.
