Edit: yeah I agree! This engine is crazy powerful!! _____________________________ Post: I didn't know this before this video, but Unreal Engine, either version 4 or 5, are free to use. Any costs that Epic charges happens if the thing you make is sold "off-the-shelf", via either brick-and-mortar or e-commerce retailers, and when total sales go above $1 mil USD. At that $1 mil USD point, Epic charges at 5% fee from there on as revenue grows. This is the default case too, which can be negotiated to even have no fees

And if the tiniest unknown thing is wrong with one script whether used or not, it's mere presence in the project files bricks the whole project, meaning it won't let you even try to playtest. I'm mostly worried about file bloat. Lumen helps immensely by removing baked lighting from the equation, but Nanite encourages monstrous levels of geometry.
@Gondus2 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't there be less file bloat via nanite though? Instead of having multiple models of an asset so that it increases in detail as you get closer, you have one file that is having polygons dynamically changed. Sure this may give a reason for studios to make even higher quality assets, but I would think having multiple is still more space.

@@Gondus a single asset with 13 million polygon uses more spaces then 5 LoDs in which the highest one is 200k polygons.

UE5 won't cure bad resource management, but the possibilities for smaller files with less work when it's well thought out is a big step forward. I'm more excited at the thought of indie games with better poly-count since the few 3d artists that work on each project will no longer put themselves in a corner (in needing to create low poly replicas) by doing so.
@charlehpock2 жыл бұрын
I think you are looking at this the wrong way. Nanite only works with static geometry. Most static geometry is going to be rendered at a certain level of detail and then have LODs for when you are far away, generally you aren't going to go higher than your most detailed model because you still have a polygon budget for your scene, so essentially you are just removing the LODs which means you are using less storage for your asset. I'd imagine you can probably get away with having a slightly higher poly assets since Nanite is probably better at managing your poly budget because it's essentially dynamically doing LOD, but look at the Matrix demo on Xbox - the filesize was only around 30GB and that was essentially a graphical tech demo pushing the limits of visual fidelity in order to demo what the engine is capable of.
@qodeshgraphics2 жыл бұрын
Just because Nanite *can* handle monstrous levels of geometry doesn't mean it's always *necessary* to do so. Most standard high quality meshes would do fine, then if there's ever a need to go to 13 million polygons, the ability is there to do so.

Interesting, it looks like the lightning system builds an environment's lightning over time. I wonder if it's taking a handful of points, doing ray/path tracing, averaging for nearby points, and then layering a few cycles of lighting calculation. It would make sense, given how the shadows were a bit delayed from the actual movement of the object. Light takes a few frames to "expire", before it dims down to zero, and with the ray tracing happening every frame, you see a sort of average over the last few frames.

This also me wonder if lightmapping could be hybridized so that it only recalculates the lightmaps that are immediately affected by a change in world geometry. Since as far as I know the process of ray tracing with large luxel sizes is pretty cheap, the shadow smoothing however is what takes time.

But how they have implemented this is pure genius, as they are able to generate "good" details quickly within a frame or two but then generate "great" details within a few frames after that. Truly optimal use of modern-day graphics card technology and parallel computing.

It's impressive, graphically speaking. I wonder what kind of processor and graphics card will be comfortable running a game with this level of detail, though. Hopefully the current generation will be able to run games released in the next 5 years smoothly enough. I do wish there was a focus on city simulation and RPG mechanics, however. Graphics are getting better and better, but gameplay-wise games are starting be so generic. Old games seem to be more realistic in this sense. It's like newer games are losing 50% of game features to get that 5% better graphics...

Honestly, I'd rather have better gameplay then better graphics. UE5 is easy to use and makes creating games easier. We had a decade of games being more graphics at the cost of gameplay. Gameplay has to be the focus or graphics don't mean much. People stop looking at the new and shiny games when the gameplay is dumbed down and lacking. ARK 2 will likely manage to do both. The minimum requirements will always depend on how much fidelity is made into the game. The lighting and all. @matiasblasi_music2 жыл бұрын
I've entered here with the same idea as you. Because i think a game shines thanks to it's gameplay and aesthetic (this last one being script, audio, visuals, etc.), a lot of games i enjoy have "obsolete" graphics and engines, but beautiful aesthetics. I really don't like when they try to reach photorealistism, reality it's in your eyes. 3D environments allow you to do anything, and you choose to replicate the thing you see everyday? But then i realized this channel is dedicated to graphics, it's a "game changer" in graphics rendering and effects. I don't think it says game changer as the literal videogame.
@TheRealFFS2 жыл бұрын
Ok, so what do you propose? Halt all work on computer graphics research? 🤷♀ Your comment is so uneducated, I don't even know where to begin. It's not a graphics programmer's job to build the game logic, nor is it the artist's job. Also, this is not just about how things look, but also about their performance. The faster the graphics can be processed within a single frame, the more time is left for other components, such as the AI, to do their work. And last but not least, engines have moved past the point of where they're thought to be used for games exclusively.
@Drstrange30002 жыл бұрын
As someone who isn't a gameplay programmer, I am also saddened at how people talk exclusively about rendering and not how gameplay hasn't really advanced much since PS3/X360. Playing a mobile V, Oculus/Meta Quest was more impressive to me than "next gen" due to the many new gameplay possibilities.

The polygon budget increase allows instancing much more geometry and removes the need for multiple LOD versions of an object as well as removing the need for some texture maps for the usual detail enhancements. so on one hand this is probably the biggest leap forward we've seen in realtime graphics in our lifetime. the combo of a robust realtime GI solution and dynamic LOD is HUGE. however what i think people are overlooking is that the focus on a photogrammetry / 3D scan / PBR workflow actually does more to lock out indie creators than it does to empower them. the real "offer" on the table is, "you can make a photorealistic game...out of our lego set." what we're already seeing is that even studios choose to license from services like megatextures because the overhead of photogrammetry or scanning for an entire game's worth of assets is a monumental overhead. this heavily contributes a stylistic monoculture in a field that's already hurting for new ideas, risk, and new visions. in my opinion the next leap forward won't happen until we hit an empowering leap with our asset authoring tools; i'm talking about robust procedural generation and design of 3D assets as well as textures - albedo, roughness / microstructure / BRDF maps. photorealistic mimicry can only go so far. in a cruel twist of fate, this PBR pipeline the industry has moved to is, in its own way, a throwback to the pre-rendered backgrounds of the PS1 era. these assets are quite literally "3D photographs" of the real world; they're not authored by an artist, they don't contain contextual information about the style or structure of their geometry - you can't put your own spin on them, or change style features in a robust way - it's a JPEG, not a photoshop file - a binary, not source code. they're drag-and-drop lego pieces. my contention is that the most compelling thing about the art of video games is the ability to create "other worlds"; and as long as we have a pipeline that locks us into creating facsimiles of the real world, the video game industry is going to create, again and again, facsimiles of the real world. don't get me wrong, this is a fantastic step, but it should also be noted the way this functionality locks creators into a "walled garden" of license dependency by providing existing libraries of photorealistic geometry and textures. that's all well and fine, but compelling video games don't come out of an erector set kit; the tools to actually empower artists to flex their creative muscle and create a unique vision are needed more than ever. when that happens, i believe the ice age that video games are currently in will thaw, and we'll see an explosion of creativity from the indie sector. the economic incentives in place for the AAA sector have locked them out of undertaking anything near the risk required to create video games of artistic and literary substance, and we're going to need our own "French New Wave" to kick the art form out of this slump.

Haven't gotten to try it yet, but one issue I notice in all these UE5 demos on KZbin is that Lumen calculates changes REALLY slow. If you do as you did and uncover a blocked light it takes several seconds for the room to slowly brighten to the right value, also as people move objects around in these scenes they get horrible ghosting, leaving behind a trail for quite a lot of frames. If you're using this for still scenes or VFX it's no big deal but it seems like this stuff would be unbearable in actual gameplay.

The lighting changing has to do with your exposure settings. You can put it on automatically adjusting exposure, this is to simulate what your eyes do when it goes from a light area to a dark area, after a while you are able to see more in the darker area. You can turn this off and have a fixed exposure, so that this doesnt happen.

What Kenny said, lumen updates instantly (subject to how complex your scene is and pc performance of course); if anything frames might go down.
