question, i'm making a school project. There is a landscapematerial that allows you to paint holes in the landscape. Is this costly? My group said I cannot add it because of performance issues but I don't really believe making a hole in the landscape with this material effects fps at all. Cheers!

I converted my 5.3.2 project to 5.4, did stuff for 5 hours, then it crashed and my project would not open in 5.4 anymore

I wish they would actually make an interesting game with this technology, instead of just looking "good" or even visualy stunning. Visuals are not everything...

I think the hardest part for me has always implementing blend spaces and state machines. I'm still confused on how motion matching would transition a characters state from lets say, un armed to armed as well as aiming.

until they fix 'massive' multiplayer and solve the replication issue, who cares? The fidelity improvements and ease-of-automation enhancements don't do anyone making multiplayer games any good at all. And single player games or movies already have cheaper, and equally as feature rich, alternatives. All Unreal does is make very shiny copy pasta. Anything hand-made you model outside of Unreal with better software. Unreal is just a storefront for asset flipping and tool sales. Tools you still have to go back and fix every patch to make them work again.

It's difficult to put into a package a comment can carry... if that makes sense. But the short of it is, Unreal has no large scale multiplayer solution that isn't 99% free range DIY. But ignoring the back-end creates a cascade of math, logic, and optimization problems that come from having to go back and hack the framework your project is meant to be supported by. It forces designers into yet another self-inflicted Unreal echo chamber of sameness. And exploitation of these echo chambers is replacing the revenue models that used to be driven by innovation and novelty in an art form. If your project doesn't fit into 100 user or fewer slices, you might as well not even bother pitching it at the meeting.

This is actually quite worrysome. it is a powerful tool but I am certain it will be abused and exploited in an attempt to replace intentional design and talent with procedual generation. We will see enormous, empty open worlds, generic animations that feel the same everywhere and overall many games that feel like what they are: not designed but generated. Think Starfield but even more generic. Many hacks will think this powerful engine can compensate for their lack of skill. People will complain about how games just "feel" worse in the coming years without knowing why.
