​@@smann7236Bangkok itself is indeed the most expensive area in Thailand, but there are a lot of choices when it comes to whichever district you want to live. If you want to live in the expat community (Thong Lor, Ekkamai, Sukhumvit etc.) then it's going to be expensive. However, if you live further away from those just like most locals everything will be way cheaper. You can still go to those "expat areas" with buses or BTS or MRT tho

I am Thai and have been living in the United States for over 10 years. I visit my home country every other year, and every time I go back, I feel like I'm a millionaire. However, my view is that if you earn an income in USD or EUR, GBP or even AUD or CAD, you will surely live in Thailand comfortably. Which I think expats and foreigners seem to forget about-that many local Thai people don't have the same privilege as they are. I still have not yet considered whether I would retire in Thailand or the United States. Since both places have pros and cons. And I have seen more cons in Thailand than the U.S. at this point. (I understand you may think I'm crazy to not retire in Thailand, but for a person like me who was born and raised in Thailand until 21 years old, don't you think I have seen it all?) Anyway, what I would recommend is that while you were there, please go out and see other areas of the country. Thailand is culturally diverse; each part of the country is interesting to explore, and Bangkok does not necessarily represent a whole country.

The reason why Thai Americans should retire in Thailand? Because the health care in the USA has become such a disaster. Waiting lists everywhere, poor services, high insurance cost unless you're qualified for the Medicaid which is free but again, long lines, poor services. Doctors here aren't interested in curing your diseases anymore but more interested in putting you in a permanent treatment program that they can bill you monthly. If your kid is American, chances are he/she won't take care of you and you will have to stay in a nursing home which is extremely expensive and most likely you will get neglected by the nurse who may have to take care of 10+ other elderly patients 😂 In Thailand you can get a personal nurse one on one and a private apartment with resort style quality for less than $1500. I'm not reaching the retirement soon but I already figured out a lot of benefits to return to my beloved country Thailand. 😊

@@nathalia7104 You brought out a good point. I still have a long way to go to reach retirement. Yes, if you go to a private hospital in Thailand, you will be treated like royalty. But if you go to a government hospital, you are expecting to be treated as poorly as you would experience in the U.S. Most of these expats and foreigners only make a vlog out of fancy hospitals and never once go to what "real" local Thai people have to experience. To be fair, some of the private hospitals in Thailand are as expensive as you would have to pay in the United States. But the majority of them are still affordable for USD money.

@@SecretObservant My mom who used to work for the Thai government got her free health care from her retirement benefits. She went to Siriraj Hospital (a gov hospital) all the time and the services there are top-notch, one of the best in the country (Even the royal families go there all the time.) But because of traffic, recently we took mom to the clinics or local hospital near our home for general elderly treatment instead. The cost is still free. The services are still much more efficient than in the USA. We just walked in and got the appointment on the same day. We saw the doctor and they sent 2 nurses to guide us through the process. After that, we went to pick up her medicine in the same building. The whole process took us 2-3 hours on their busy day. So convenient and so efficient. And me, who waited the entire 6 months for my colonoscopy here in the US it's a really unbelievable thing to see. 😂

BKK, Thailand and other ASEAN nation cities will be the future. BKK is pretty much the NYC of Asia but much safer. Cost of living is relatively inexpensive besides the VISA runs. Being n American who has been based in Bangkok for YEARS, with investments in my own company and with my partner having their own 100 year family business to cushion us. Having said that, I hang out with normal average income friends [Chinese Thai community is closed knit_connected since they were in primary and secondary school ], I will go out for drinks around.at PromPong, I sit and listen to all these expats going on about how trendy Asia really is and cheap, while drinking their 600 baht cocktails. When I moved here to my area it was emporium and considered the boonies. Now I have emsohere, emquatier, and its already feeling like my old days living in Seoul. The only two strong things I will strongly praise Asia has been is it’s great medical priced scene and it’s so so so safe.

Thailand has also introduced a new Thai Elite Visa: Bronze, it's a lot cheaper at 650K baht, so about 18K USD. It's good for 5years. It doesn't have as much benefits as the other Thai Elite Visas, but it has a good amount of the same benefits. The main difference is it's geared toward people who want to stay long term in Thailand without the additional bells and whistles of the other Thai Elite Visas.

David, I look forward to the new content. Could you include videos of the cost of living for the different places in Asia you are planning to visit? And could you talk about stuff like how difficult it is to pick up a new language. I have two kids around your age who I have been encouraging to consider living in the East. They are both 5th generation Chinese North American in academia and research so they are finacially comfortable here but are being offered quite a bit of incentives to return to the "motherland". A substancial portion of their colleagues has already made the move but those individuals are 1 gen and may have an easier time adjusting. Looking forward to seeing all the new videos.

Hi. For TH and Malaysia, I'd say minimum of $1500/month to have a good expat life. Singapore is more pricey, so maybe $2000. For Cambodia, VN, PH, Indonesia, Laos, one can live on $1000/ month. Myanmar is in civil war now, so wouldn't recommend. Brunei is good for a short visit but many ppl find it "boring". Of course as with anywhere, it depends on one's lifestyle. If one lives in the capital or big cities, rents will be higher. If one likes to eat in restos, drink, party, travel etc then expenses will increase. In the last group of countries that I mentioned, one can survive on $500 or less (like a local) but most expats or Western-raised ppl won't want that. It would mean living without A/C, cooking at home, etc. Korea & Japan would cost more, as they're almost at par with USA prices. One also has to factor in visa costs, if one is not a dual citizen. If they haven't traveled/ visited for a holiday, then I suggest that they check it out first before making a big leap.

I recently got back from a Thailand trip recently & loved it. I too would like to move there now. I've been working remotely in IT for 5 years now, been with the same company for 3 years. Unfortunately, I asked them if I could go work from there, but they wouldn't approve of it (they said that "could" change in the future though, so to ask again later on when I'm ready to make that move). So, if I really want to do this, I might have to leave my job. How much money would you think the average person would need in order to quit their job & make that move? Also, I've been following Paul Lee, which I've seen you hanging out with him. So, I'm sure you're aware of his ways of making money while living over there. I was thinking about going the same route. Good move, IMO. I hope you'll learn and adopt a majority mindset living in Asia. A majority mindset ain't saying superiority or similar, it's just saying that iner thoughts of yourself as an Asian, is more the norm amongst a majority Asian population. I think living in CONUS, most Asians have a minority mindset which affects confidence and self worth. You mentioned Thong Lor to stay at in BKK. I think areas like Ratchada or On Nut might also be good. Basically anywhere close to a MRT or BTS station. Good luck.

My advice is that you should move from place to place in Thailand, not just in Bangkok. Places like Chiang Mai or Pattaya are great too for digital nomads. You can also explore nearby Malaysia and Singapore. Also, Thailand may still be cheap, but it's becoming very materialistic nowadays. So if you don't have discipline on your finances, it won't be cheap.

I used to live in Bangkok when I went to school before I went to the US. Stayed there for 2 years, and that was back in the early 90's. Now, I go there about twice a year, and it is a good place to live and work for short periods (a few months at a stretch). I would not like to live there unless I have work there, but it's enjoyable to stay for short stretches. As an Asian guy, I blend in, but since I'm not fluent in Thai, it's a bit difficult to make friends and stay for long periods.
