I’m Thai and what I noticed is My country 🇹🇭 is like a life cheat code for many people, mostly Westerners ! with affordable living, vibrant culture, and welcoming people. we’re also adaptable to any culture, LGBT-friendly, and many of us speak English ! Asian Americans especially feel at home with their roots here, fitting into Thai culture naturally. Personally, I’d rather see Asian Americans exploring and embracing Thai culture than the retired western old guys coming to my country for you know what and not even able to speak 1 word of thai.

I'm working with westerners (farang) colleague in Bkk. Let me be honest. I don't want westerners to move in Thailand. The cultural gab is too big. It turn toxic. They are so cold, never listen, disrespect etc, May be it considered normal back in their country but many of their normal is rude in Thailand. I have had it enough in my work place.

I'm an American, but mixed Asian and been living in Bangkok for 5 years, almost 6. I would say it is pretty good and comfortable living here, people are mostly easy-going and polite and they don't bother you, service is okay in general, it's mostly affordable and you get a lot of bang for your baht here. I live a really good lifestyle, I usually eat whatever I want and go out to eat to cool places without feeling like I spent too much money. I live in a very affordable modern condo studio for $360 a month with a rooftop infinity pool overlooking the skyline of the city. It's pretty good, of course not perfect like visas and 90 day reports are still a major pain and make it hard living here long-term, but I can see why it's popular.

First off it’s a massive part of Thai culture in terms of the red light district so it’s hypocritical to judge foreigners who are enjoying what is being offered. Also, if you took that away from those women are you going to be the one to replace it with different jobs for those people? My partner is from TX. He was supposed to leave Thailand after 2 years. It’s been 10 years and he’s not thinking of goin back. Like many people have said, Thailand is not perfect in everything. But it is the overall combined balance of everything that makes it special. You want Italian food? Got ‘em. You want Japanese food? Plenty. You need good hospitals? Take your pick. How about schools if I have kids? Tons of international schools. Need a break, where can I go? Mountains, rivers, sea, islands and beaches, cultural retreats etc. you get the picture. The sex tourism imagery may be stuck in most westerner’s head from word of mouth and through western media, but I can assure you that it’s a small percentage to everything that this country has to offer. The nightlife here is so diverse it’s unreal. You will find just about any mood that fits what you want. Mellow nice evenings, upbeat clubs down to quick and easy pubs n bars.

We came to Thailand from California, hoping to stay here for a while. Just with everything going on and Thailand being comfortable for Asian Americans like us… it’s been great! We travel within Bangkok all the time and we usually spend $20-$50/day, that includes food, light shopping and transportation. Food is cheap and delicious, ride services are cheap too. Everyone has their own reasons, but for us, staying in Thailand made sense. Especially, with our 15 year old dog that loves it here.

It's not perfect, but Thailand is one of the OG and one of the most successful multicultural countries around. Even back in the days when it was still Siam, you have Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Persian, Portuguese and Dutch settling in Thailand since the 1500s. But because Thai culture is so inclusive the foreign communities don't Ghettoize themselves and over time melded into Thai culture rather than stand apart, that's how Thai culture has developed and continues to develop to this day, you'll find foreign influences all over, but because Thailand has never been colonized, those foreign influences have always been adapted to blend rather than forced/superimposed on Thais.

Wow, it's crazy that you guys posted this today. I recently went to Thailand for my first time & literally just got back last night. I already have friends from America who currently live there (which is the reason why I visited), & they just kept telling me how great it is. So I was thinking that if I could keep my current job & go live there for a couple years, I could save so much money! I work fully remote in IT, so I'm hoping my job would be okay with it. In America, I'm just getting by living alone & it's so stressful. Aside from my fulltime job, I'm also picking up Amazon Flex shifts before & after my regular job shift, so somedays I'm working like 16-18hrs. I've also been looking for another part-time job. I even thought about moving back in with my parents, just because I'm drained, mentally & physically. This Thailand trip really opened my eyes.

My friend in Hong Kong is going to retire in Thailand. As gay Asian men, we are at the very rock bottom of the totem pole in the west and most of the Asian countries and people hate, ignore, reject, or forget us. Thailand is one of the very few places where we can go to and gay marriage will be legal in January 2025. Personally, I would prefer to live in Taiwan but Taiwan is much harder to go to retire.

To become a non-Taiwan born ROC citizen (not talking about ARC visas), the process is so hard that you almost have to announce your citizenship, However, if you are married to one, or one of your parents is one, that fixes the problem. Keep in mind, they are paying for your health care, even when you didn't serve their military. If you want to retired there.. just ask how the Viets do it.. and money also talks..

I love everything about Thailand...except the weather. It's oppressively hot year round...I just can't handle the heat! I found myself imprisoned in shopping malls and air-conditioned spaces and when I went out on the street (for more than a few minutes) I just broiled. It's hot and it's humid year round...I felt sticky and uncomfortable all the time. I remember arriving in Bangkok for the 1st time and walking a few blocks from the metro to my hotel...by the time I arrived at the hotel, I was drenched in sweat and the hotel staff could not contain their laughter (apparently only westerners sweat like that). From that point on, I could only go to the nearest shopping mall or go out out at night (night markets are big in Thailand for a reason). Japan is far, far more comfortable as far as the weather is concerned but the culture is alien...Thailand, even though it's a Buddhist country, is surprisingly western in outlook...so many Thais speak English, which was not the case in Japan. The Thai culture seems friendly and open and welcoming and genuinely curious and embracing of foreigners, where as Japanese culture seems less welcoming and far more suspicious of foreigners. If I could move the country of Thailand to the latitude of Japan...it would be perfect!

I'm Thai-American and I just returned from Thailand a few days ago. I spent the entire month of October there and I will eventually retire in 2 years! As far as spending power with your dollars, it really depends on what you eat and where you eat. If you stick to local Thai food away from the touristy areas, you will spend $1.50 on Chinese roast duck over rice or you can spend $10 on Burger King or McDonald's. It's a myth that everything is cheap in Bangkok! At most major shopping malls in Bangkok, there will be an inexpensive food court where you can pay local Thai prices which is dirt cheap! For example, at the Terminal 21 shopping center food court I paid $1.50 for stewed pork legs over rice, $1.50 for Hainanese chicken and rice, 59 cents for a large Pepsi, and for dessert, $1.00 for mango and sticky rice. For less than $5, I was completely full! This would have been impossible in the US for under $5!

I moved to Krabi in the south of Thailand, in 5 years ago. I'm retired and married to a local girl. I'm settled in her farmland next to the beach. We don't spend much money here, except when we traveled around Asia countries. We spend a lot of times on the farm and go fishing and crabbing in an island nearby.

As a Thai, I have a word of advice for people moving here. Thailand is very welcoming of foreigners, but we are mostly traditional and conservative, for example with LQBT we are very acceptance, but not in the way westerner do, i.e. we believe in 2 genders. So don't be woke or try to impose western wokeness values, do that and you will get beat up. Other than that just be polite and smile and people will be nice to you.

There are too many Chinese in Bangkok right now! Normally, Thailand is very opened to other culture. But this phenomenon happened too quickly. I am worried about future conflicts. We spent 3 generations to assimilate oversea Chinese into our culture and eliminate racism. We don't want to start it all over again. This wave of Chinese immigrant tend to look down on us. It's understandable. But the more they seperate themselves from locals, the less they understand Thais. In the end they will be ripped off.

Hi. I would say at least $1500 usd if you like eating out, going to cafes & bars, travel, etc. You can *survive* on $1000 but it will be survival/ minimalist mode. You'll also have to account for visas and health insurance.

Thailand is a multicultural country from start. If you look closely, there are 4 regions with different background so ppl marry across the culture within the country. Besides, there are so many ppl marry foreigners as well so it’s kind of mixing in cultures more than other countries. I know America has ppl from around the world but they don’t mixed well and ppl trend to live their lives within their own communities.

It reminds me of African Americans moving to different countries Africa a few years ago. Most of them have moved back because of the very serious differences socially and politically, missing family. You can go experience the culture in a way you may have dreamed of without making a big commitment while you are young. Also don't underestimate language barriers and unwritten rules

Chiang Mai (or the more rural Chiang Rai) is way different than Bangkok (the rat race; a huge metropolis, just like New York or Ho Chi Minh (in Vietnam; it is split in "Districts"); more laid back. P.S.: I have heard that: besides the regular "Monsoon" seasons, the Hot and Dry seasons (for toursim), there is the "Burning" seasons (2 - 3 months). I was there for 2 weeks, and returned back home before the coronavirus/Covid-19 pandemic era started in early 2020.

As a Thai I have to say sometime it's not true here in Thailand about the asian background my friend, it's because we Thai always welcoming any race even you're white, black, blue, red or yellow and it's equally! In Bangkok it's not weird if your group has all the types of human races. Because nowaday we Thai still ok with the European people but a lot of Thai nowadays already felt very bad about the Chinese, Arab and India tourists that made a lot of bad problems here in Thailand. Chinese : many of them throwing the garbages everywhere they go and some very loud and rude and no respectful. Indian : Throwing the garbages everywhere they go too just like nothing and love to steal and not pay. Arab : nowadays a lot of them dare to being gangsters and even beated and bullied the Arab tourists here at the tourist areas.

Thailand has gotten a lot more expensive in recent years. I feel like all these influencer videos you've seen are outdated as 20,000 THB is actually closer to $600 these days not $500. Plus in Bangkok 20,000 THB without a 1 year contract just ain't happening, even with a 1 year contract 20,000 isn't going to get you 500 sq feet. The video you showed of a smaller apartment is more realistic but likely more out of town. Ahshon chula is actually 30,000 - 75,000 for 100 sq feet THB today.

Thailand is banging. I (british born chinese) first went there post unitveristy for 6 months to travel around SE Asia and then my English wife's sister and husband got jobs in Bangkok and lived there for 5 years so we went to visit them a lot. I also proposed to my wife on one of those trips on this amazing resort off the coast of Phuket called the Racha. Basically the expat lifestyle in Bangers is amazing and if you have kids you have maids and nannies to help out. They've since moved back to London though I know they miss Bangkok and we miss the fact that we dont have a base in SE Asia anymore. My sister also lived in HK at the time so we could spend time with both families whilst exploring places like Cambodia and Vietnam. I miss Thailand a lot.

There are some russian mafia, some chinese grey business, some middle east mafia, and some bad old westerners in Thailand causing problems from time to time.
