Congrats on passing the tests. I hope to go up for my check ride soon... But I am jealous of the mere idea of having your own airstrip. That would be an impossibility here in the Netherlands. Even for helicopters, as a famous entrepreneur found out. He bought a small helo, found out he is still only allowed to land it at designated heliports which did not include his house or office. He got mad and (illegally) parked the thing on the roof of his office, where it sits to this day.

I learned to fly at Ipswich Airport while I was stationed at RAF Bentwaters in the 80s. It had two very well maintained grass runways, and I loved the experience. Having flown out of hundreds of airports in the United States, I can say that flying out of Ipswich airport was a valuable experience for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it! It will always hold a special place in my heart.

Ipswich was my first land away, I learned to fly at Southend.

@@ShortField That must’ve been a very nice cross country. I learned at Horizon Flying Club and the chief flight instructor was Bill Stitt. I was sad to hear that they closed the airport sometime after I left England. I believe he moved the club to a farm in Framlingham, Suffolk. Not sure if it even exists today.

Your videos on short field landing are very inspiring. I enjoy flying round the farm strips of Devon and Cornwall in my Skyranger, out of Perranporth. My favourtites are Eggesford, Stoodleigh Barton, Davidstow, Eaglescott and Bolt Head. Hope to get further afield as time and weather allow!

Nice one Terry, hit the nail on the head there! Think I recognised most of those strips, done most of them in G-HAYY. Sportcruiser also, as you know, but mentioned for your followers. Great aircraft for almost all strips, but also comfortable in the cruise. The lovely Rotax can hardly be heard👂

I’ve had a very similar experience.... learnt to fly in a Warrior, but since moving over to fixed wing microlights, I’ve loved being able to land almost anywhere. My home strip is 300m, and I’m happy getting it in there, so knowing there aren’t many shorter strips, the world is our lobster! Thanks for another great vid Terry...

A nice thought provoking video Terry💜😊👍✌️ With my dad, I started at grass strips, then did some training at larger, local airport alongside, jets, helos, microlights etc with FISO and often very busy. Good to get a feel for both imho👍🤔😊💜

I learnt to fly at an airfield with only grass runways. (Shortest 774m, longest 1338m). So having flown into plenty of short strips with no official charts I am the opposite to you. It's not that I avoid anything with a sealed runway it is just that I am not as confident flying into controlled airspace. My excuse at the moment is my preferred cross country aircraft needs it's transponder upgraded before I can go into controlled airspace as the rules were changed while it was awaiting a new engine being installed. Once that is sorted I definitely have to make more flights into my closest Control C airport. It even has a short grass strip (not even 700m long) next to the main runway.

I think that was Weybourne, also home to the Muckleburgh Collection (Military). Well worth a visit, and superb approach over the water (and the guns!)

Nice video Terry. I just fly to the strips because I can and my little plane is not great on hard runways. I often get asked about the strips I go to but very few will join me for the flight to them. I always treat them as a cross between a precautionary landing and a normal circut for my 1st visit and have an alternative should it be a no go.

I have found/landed at 5 airfields on The Isle of Wight (Bembridge, Dandown, Binstead, Whitwell, Freshwater Fruitfarm). It would be nice to find another if anyone has contact details etc.

Not sure there are any others, Freshwater is very tight and I cocked up Whitwell but Binstead is pretty forgiving. You beat me by one :-)
