I think better than making a modular design would be an option to make a custom leatherman. I don’t want to even imagine how much they would charge for something like that, but being able to swap those couple tools you never use for something you would find so valuable without losing that leatherman warranty would be amazing.

Despite an unbelievable amount of out the box errors with my P4 I still use it every day. The click when opening the pliers, the sturdy feeling of the Jaws, the knife and scissor are all reasons why.

Leatherman Surge is my all time favorite . There seem to be lots of great multi tools out there but since Surge does all the jobs that I need, I really don’t find a reason to get another one. I carry my surge on my belt and that’s it for the multi tool. No hesitation. 😅

I don't believe leatherman is worth the money. The bibury is $30. Now the leatherman even close to that tool is over $120. Leatherman is still using 420hc bibury is using 7cr17 which is a step up from 420. Even if leatherman actually stood behind its warranty i bet i could buy a whole another bibury for the shipping and handling. I really don't understand the brand loyalty. They are just another big corporation that doesn't care about the customer just the profits. Not to mention leatherman bits are soft.

I agree; why spend 3 - 4 times the money for a Leatherman, when you can get a similar multitool for SO MUCH LESS.

G'day mate. We all know Leatherman is the way it is (for decades) due to its long-term vision & they are really "on focus". It has quality & durability with endless customization. It caters for multiple profession, indoors & outdoors. Leatherman does not need to be too modular, it has followers, investors & real fans. Most people buy Leatherman because it's a Leatherman.! It has a global community. After saying all the above, we still have not own a Leatherman. We're not against it. We do respect Leatherman but we just like having a multitool that we customised to our needs & requirement. Basically, it's functional with our usages. Your criticization are professional critic of which we are sure that all multitool company do take note. We will definitely hire you as an adviser when we have our multitool company. In the meantime, your contribution is priceless to the community. Cheers from Australia.

Letherman should do the modular tool the chinesse are doing. But i suspect they are on the wait and see tribe on that front. I wish they had better smaller tools under 60$.

Perhaps they intend to follow Victorinox's lead, relying on their customers to keep providing sales, and allowing the new contenders to do the innovation. Maglite, Nokia, Honda etc.
@hitchpost5822Ай бұрын
Except for mentioning them at the very end you failed to talk about Victorinox they have at least one tool as heavy as the Surge. Victorinox is not American made but they make quality tools and have a lifetime warranty. Up until the replaceable cutters issue, I was totally a Leatherman plier based multi tool fan and a Victorinox pocket knife multi tool believer. Leatherman has lost my business until I see a change in there business practices. The cutters are not the only problem that is not covered by warranty the bits for there exchanger are way to soft and don’t hold up.and at times are not even available.

I would really like to see Leatherman work on their costs. There is a lot that they could do in terms of cost reductions and still manufacture within the US. I would also like to see Leatherman offer the ability to pick and choose implements. Examples: Being able to order a Wave with a regular size scissor to replace the saw, replace the can / bottle opener with a scalpel, and replace the itty bitty scissor with an awl. Leatherman says they do all these different studies on what type of implement people want… Please stop with the nonsense! Let customers pick and choose the implements they want / need.

So after you hooked us all with the clones I stick to them. Leatherman isnt worth the extra money anymore. Especially if I need a beater tool for the work or a cheap spare in my car. I still own a Surge and a wave but rarely use them anymore.

I think people like you have paid so much to leatherman during the years that they've become attached, its like apple syndrome, it might be slightly better but absolutely not worth the price and the non-friendly approach to thier customers sometimes, no offense to anyone... Unfortunately Leatherman's present (very apple-esque, profit first) attitude, only addressing glaring issues when there's enough negative publicity, proprietary stuff leading to scarcity, atrocious international markups and their only revent innovation/improvement is the material quality of one implement of their latest flagship ... doesn't inspire much confidence. Granted they could pull off something amazing, have another change in leadership, and/or render everything in my comment moot, which would make me very happy (because when one multitool brand improves, they all do and we reap the benefits) but the signals (heh) aren't looking too groovy.
