Yea it’s solid powertrain as I mentioned. But, if you’ve been in a GX for a long period of time and also tundra, you’d agree it is the superior powertrain option.

That anemic, overly complicated drive train is the biggest fail for me with this LC. The truck looks great from a design perspective. I really love the boxy look. But the cheap materials and corner cutting literally everywhere on this thing, particularly given the price point, just don't make sense. I feel like it's a $35K truck with a $70K price tag. Given how cheap and tinny the doors sound when they close, I suspect they omitted pretty much all of the sound deadening in this model as well. $200-worth of Dynamat would've made it so much better. And like you said, even the fact that there's no laminated glass on this $70K truck is a glaring omission. For me, ditching the hybrid altogether in favor of the manual transmission drive train from the Tacoma (same platform, so why not?) would have been a massive improvement for this rig. Then deleting all of the useless electronic off-road gimmickry would have made it just about perfect. I would probably be so happy with it at that point I'd completely overlook the rest of the issues. Unfortunately, Toyota just doesn't listen to their customer base anymore.

So. Fucking. Tired. of the complaints about the engine on the LC. "It gets great MPG, it's got loads of torque, we've had no problems with it at all. But I hate it!" It's exhausting and ridiculous. The v6 on the gx550 is loud as hell, and the MPG is pathetically bad.

Sorry but its based off the same TGNA platform as the tacoma. Same internal bump stops, no proper external trans intercooler, same problematic 8 speed, same hard plastics everywhere, same thinned out steel on box frame and many other corners cut. The outgoing 4 liter may have less torque but it's indestructible. Same went for the older 5 speed auto. Literally the last 300K mile plus truck made for North America. These new ones will never reach that kind of mileage without substantial cost. Just a turbo replacement your talking 10K. Repairability costs out of warranty is off the charts. MPG's no better. This yet another victim of the EPA. Only turbo worth buying from the mighty Yota is the D4D turbo diesel. Which the US will never get. Also that engine uses the reliable and robust 6 speed. The Global product continues to get the better version. FIngers crossed that Nissan comes back with a real body on frame Xterra with the NA 3.8 V6. Rumors say they are considering it. This would be more viable option.

@@HiPlains1I detect BS. It doesn’t cost 10k to replace a turbo on this Toyota, it doesn’t even cost that much to replace a turbo on an AMG. Also turbo lifespan is like 150000 miles, or 10 years. I still think the better buy is the Nissan Armada, its cost slightly more but you get so much car.

Great review. With all due respect, the 87 Landcruiser that my father put in excess of 300k with just maintenance, also very basic. The motor was adequate, the features basic. I was underwhelmed the first hour behind the wheel. I thought, why does he just rave on this thing. After they put 330k or so on it, they gave it to a farmer up the road, it is still used as a hay wagon. I agree the prices for what you get, etc, but that applies to everything. I drive a 23 LX now, and as nice as it is, there are compromises compared to BMW, Cadillac, Range Rover, they are "more" in some ways. The one thing, and the reason I bought and drive the LX, is the quality. I think they are superior to the last gen LX. Some love the v8, I get it, to each their own. My father, after the mid-80s, refused to buy or discuss any brand except Toyota. I still think they make the best product. I appreciate a review where the critique actually comes from someone that has actually driven or owened the vehicles they comment on.

I'm very happy with mine, but most of these are valid points. I wouldn't want the fuel ecomony of the TTV6, and find the power of the current powertrain more than sufficient. Also find the seat warmer to be very effective, but that could be a difference with the cloth seats in my 1958 trim level.

I have two heat levels on my 2019 Frontier pro 4X. HIgh is almost too hot. IMO the leather seats on mine is of higher quality then these new trucks. The port injected motor will have no issue going 300K miles. This model 250 will need a 10k turbo far before that. And it literally cost 2X more then what I paid for my P4X. New trucks are such the depreciating assets.

Couldn’t agree more Jon. I have your exact vehicle and I am coming up on 10,000 miles. Overall, I am disappointed in the vehicle and Toyota for going cheap on what used to be their flagship vehicle. If I was to summarize my experience, the Land Cruiser is not a good value. For nearly $80,000, I expected much more in the way of quality, options, and luxury features. Instead they cut virtually every corner they could and have cheapened a legendary vehicle. I am contemplating selling mine and buying my fourth forerunner as it seems to have virtually every thing the Land Cruiser does and more for about $10-$15,000 less. Never thought I would say that, but when I compare this Land Cruiser to my 2011 Lexus LX 570, it is a tin can.

I feel you are looking at this the wrong way- Its meant to be the FJ Cruiser successor, to allow people to offload and be spartan. While I agree with you about the cost, Its still just a more luxury wise FJ Cruiser. It has ample torque to off-road and decent platform to go anywhere and build up. Where Im confused in this day of multi-use platforms with cost savings, I was surprised they actually made the 4 cylinder hybrid and not just use that V6 TT, in all of these frames. With the hybrid, its LX-700/ Sequoia level. Without, it's perfect for the LX550 and LC. It makes it a simple set up and you dont lose a ton of room in the back, with that battery. Im actually surprised you didnt dislike that. I saw that immediately and was a no-go. It limits what you can install on the floor and adds weight higher up. I drove both while visiting family in Florida last week and found both to accelerate the same with the GX being a lot smoother. The only edge the hybrid would bring is really low gearing for rock crawling, where smooth grunt of torque is needed to not snap CVs from gunning it. I feel with these reviews, Toyota is going to have a lot of LCs siting around, as the GX simply offers more, in a nicer package, for the same money (when comparing top tiered LC to the GX Over Trail). Overall I was left wondering why Toyota would make these compete against each other. Either they need to really drop the price of the LC or raise the GX550. My wife and I weren't looking for another "FJ" as I went down that rabbit hole previously (Crack Rock Toyeti-you can google it) but rather a good towing platform. The GX out tows the LC and is literally the same as the Sequoia. Thats why were looked at the Defender 110 and Sequoia and our money will be on the GX550 Over Trail (not the + plus) as I feel it offers little extra and still makes you pay more for the premium Mark Levinson stereo, for a lot more money.

No, they should have used the drivetrain from the Lexus 600HL, a hybrid 5.0 V8, that gets 22mpg. Would still have a hybrid status, while still giving you a V8 powerplant. People are already gettingn19-22 mpg with the 2.4l anyway, so no real loss for Toyota to do that.

i'm holding out hope that a tune or some kind of ECU update from Toyota will unlock the power of the LC250 drivetrain. for everyday driving at speed i have zero complaints, but from a stop, this thing just doesn't want to move with any sort of urgency. is it the AWD? I don't know... i have a 2025 Premium BTW. thanks Jon and looking forward to 6th gen driving impressions

Jon, your hand positions should be 10 and 2, or 8 and 4. 8 and 4 is my preferred driving position for both autmobiles and tractor trailers, Very comfortable and less tiring on long hauls. 👍 😊

@TRDJon Jon. I mentioned 8 and 4 which I use personally, 10 and 2 is just a road test thing in the past, up here they approve 8 and 4 now as well. Tilt the steering wheel down or raise your seat up (we have Air Ride in our tractor trailer seats) enough to grab the wheel at 8 and 4 when both arms are resting (permenatly) on the upper part of your legs (hip to knees), gives you great control and its less tiring than 10 and 2, far less tiring. My personal views and how I Drive (everything). 👍 😊

At almost $9K more expensive than the regular LC250 w/ Premium Pkg, strange that the First Edition didn't come with acoustic glass, massaging seats, and color-matching bumpers and rocker panels. Instead, it has a fancier roof rack, a nicer front skid plate, a cool box, and FE splash guards. Do those things add up to $9K? 🤔🤔

Much rather have the Prado with a 2.8 turbo diesel. If I buy GX it would be a clean low mileage 2009 with the bulletproof 4.7 v8. Hopefully Nissan will come out with a new midsize SUV with the 3.8 normally aspirated engine. These new petrol turbo engines add complexity and repairability costs are so much higher now. Toyota's d4d turbo diesel being the exception. It just seems the new Tacoma and this LC 250 we're on a cheap platform. This one has many of the same flaws of the Tacoma being it's sharing the same flawed platform.

Your not biased. Literally all the TNGA platforms are massive cost cutting/stream lined trucks to boost margins. None of these hold a candle against a Model 200 LC, last gen 4 runner or a GX 460. Not even close.

In regards to the seats(heat/ventilated) it seems to be a difference between US market vehicles(Tundra, Tacoma, 4Runner, etc.) vs Global market vehicles like the LC and GX. Also in regards to the engine you're looking at it from a US market view. The rest of the world doesn't get the 4Runner. Like it or not in the Global market the 250 doesn't compete with the 4Runner. It is kinda 'rough' though, very buzzy. For the climate control, you can just say 'Hey Toyota, set the climate control to 72 degrees' you don't need to touch the buttons at all. The gas tank complaint will follow on the GX. It's a few gallons bigger, but gets worse mileage. You end up with pretty much the same range.
@TRDJon
@TRDJon 9 күн бұрын

Toyota: Put a freaking V8 into the LX with iforce max. Same for Sequoia and remove that stupid third row so we can fold seats down flat. Put the V6 with Iforce max in the GX. The Land Cruiser 250, V6 Turbo and stop being cheap. Give us noise reducing glass on LC and mirrors that don't melt on GX and LC when we put PPV on the car. 4runner do your silly v4 with iforce I guess, but get give a convertible option for God's sake and manual transmission! And bring back the expensive LC 300. I feel like I am in the "Good place" TV show where I almost get what I want, but not really. And while I'm bitching, you need to redo the supra. That just doesn't work.

Kind of a let down coming from the prior generation. Not saying I dislike the looks, rather I'm coming to my conclusion based on how refined the prior version was, meaning it was soooo far into its product life that Toyota had the opportunity to perfect it. Same for the 4runner--I had a 2016 and now a 2023 and they've added acoustic glass, with the newer one not having any squeaking or rattles--again, they've had time to perfect the product. I suspect all new Toyota models will become more refined with time and increase their reliability, but I cannot recommend anyone go out an buy one of the first year models if they want the long term reliability the old gens and still really good models provide.

This land cruiser 250 or prado just doesn’t make sense in the Toyota lineup IMO. The new 4Runner is the same exact thing if not better. If it was a land cruiser 200, it would live up to its name as long as it distinguishes itself from the sequoia. Like the price tag alone, a sequoia just makes so much more sense

It's the industry, inflation affects car companies to my friend. Now, there are some shortcuts from Toyota not saying it's not. But, if they made it close to Lexus they would charge more for it. And plus remember they were never supposed to bring this vehicle to the United States. Pretty much it was an aftermarket thought. This is the bottom of the barrel Land cruiser, the 200 series so remember this also!
