I think Die Hard owes a great deal of its success to Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber. Having such a great villain who was both charismatic and genuinely interesting gave it an extra level that 99% of all action films don't have. Great writing and great characters beats great effects any day.

That is not a fair comparison because of the amount of output from the Rock vs. Tom and RDJ are different. Let’s compare, shall we? From 2015 -2019, Tom Cruise will have done six movies in total. Only one came out a year except 2017 where it was American Made and The Mummy. Now we can say what we want about the quality of those movies, but they feel different. Robert Downey Jr, from 2015 - 2018 did one film a year where he reprised the Tony Stark character. He will do it again in 2019 and will play Doctor Dolittle. So, I don’t see why I would get sick of seeing them. In that same time span, The Rock will have done 11 movies, two WrestleManias, more episodes of his show, and a cameo in the shitty Jem and the Holograms movie. But if Robert Downey Jr and Tom Cruise had that kind of output than I would get sick of seeing them.

It's not just the summer with too many blockbusters on top of each other nowadays, but around Christmas too, especially this year in December. There is both Mortal Engines and Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse on the 14th, Mary Poppins Returns on the 19th, ant Alita Battle Angel, Bumblebee, Aquaman, Holmes & Watson, and Welcome to Marwen on the 21st. There is no way all of these movies are going to do well. And like Korey said, people don't really have breathing room when one or two blockbusters come out once a week, let alone on the same day, within the time-span of one week.

Not to take anything away from Arnie (he brings his own brand of charisma no easily replicated) but this really shows that he was very fortunate to come up around the same time as guys like Cameron and Verhoeven, who were on their creative prime during the 80's/90's. Don't get me wrong, there are very creative directors/writers around now as well. Unfortunately, all their projects don't require a mountain of a guy to be the main character. Also, the business has changed quite a bit. Not that he is doing too bad now but I've always said that the Rock came up 1-2 decades too late. Imagine him now but during the 80s or 90s.
