Having lived in Kanagawa and having to pass through Shinjuku station often, definitely still got lost sometimes lol. Always loved Shibuya in general, definitely a place you'll never get bored. I think there's something for everyone there! I think people dont think enough about the last train part as well! Last train times are quite early if you're a night owl, and taking a taxi is really expensive and not worth it. Just being able to walk to your accommodation is so huge. Good recommendations! ❤

Thank you for your input! I totally agree that taxis are overpriced and not worth it! I made the rookie mistake of missing last train and paying 30k yen for a taxi... oops!

Absolutely agree with you - I always recommend first-time visitors to stay near stops that are situated within the Yamanote Line. Specifically to choose between Shibuya or Shinjuku. For the budget seeking ones, I tend to recommend Asakusa (not as conveniently reached as stations within Yamanote but still not difficult to reach/connect with other lines) and the perks being that its near to Tokyo station and Akihabara. Personally, I been exploring stays on the 'outskirt' areas but still within reach from Shinjuku and Shibuya, with my latest stay at Koenji which is near to Nakano (Nakano Broadway) and still a very reasonable 20minutes train ride to Shinjuku. Koenji is quieter but such a vibe during the evening.

I suggest you DON'T stay in Shibuya or any other major busy area of Tokyo. Visit them by all means, but don't stay in them unless you like the thought of being on a roller coaster that never sleeps 😅 After 10 Japan visits, and 8 visits to Tokyo, the winner is Sugamo. During each visit I've stayed in a different location each time. Firstly, when staying in Tokyo it's super important to stay as close as you can to a station on the Tokyo Yamanote Loop Line. This has you on track quickly to your destinations without having to connect from a line outside the city centre to the Yamanote line. On my 8th trip I found the quiet northern area of Sugamo/Otsuka which is the best area I've stayed in out of eight different spots. It's regarded as a seniors' local area with its cheaper prices all around in restaurants and supermarkets, etc. Sugamo is also home to the tranquil Rikugien Garden, one of the two great Edo gardens. The town also boasts the traditional 'Jizo-dori street market day' in the middle of the shopping street three times a month with locals selling bric-a-brac and collectables amongst the food vendors ! Sugamo is only 2 stations from Ikebukuro a major hub and busy city center. It's also centred on the Yamanote line between Shinjuku/Shibuya and Akihabara/Tokyo so you're doing less travelling time either direction between the busy tourist areas. Sugamo also has 2 railway lines and a tram line ! The Toei subway station, is right next to the JR railway station, so it's super convenient. In addition there is the Arakawa Toden Tram line as well, the last remaining tram line in Tokyo. Now re-named as the 'Sakura Tram' (cherry blossom tram) it's a wonderful area to explore overlooked by most tourists. Also, only one connection from Sugamo is required to either Haneda or Narita Airports. It's a big advantage to be able to enjoy your mornings having breakfast in the quiet area of Otsuka/Sugamo at the start of your day, then able to retreat from the bustling crowds at the end of each day. Still, most tourists will stay in one of the hectic busy areas of Tokyo and overlook this gem of a location, but maybe that's ok and it will leave it being the 'jewel in the crown' that it is 👑. Sugamo #1 👍
@spark_671019 күн бұрын
I have to say that your pick is very unusual !! I am originally from Tokyo ,but not even sure where Sugamo is ! Lol And Yamanote line is useful ,but Toshima-ku isn't hip or fashionable . A very good place to raise kids, though ! It can be very boring. Especially for young people & travelers !! For youngsters & young travelers ,I recommend Shibuya ,Aoyama, Yoyogi areas ! For young travelers who enjoy more suburban vibes / lifestyles, Shimokitazawa is a good choice ! For mid age travelers ,Marunouchi and Akasaka are wonderful choices !! Travelers who have money & love more sophisticated things & exquisite vibes ,etc.,Ginza is a great pick !! 💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞P.S.maybe a lot of things changed ? I never liked Ikebukuro area ,either . There are & were lots of troubled kids hang out who use drugs in Ikebukuro ! Although my relatives live near by & love the areas ,I never liked the areas .

@@spark_6710 I'm glad I've highlighted Sugamo for you, you're in for a treat. Visit on either the 4th, 14th, or 24th to catch a Jizo-Dori street market day, There's a Toden Arakawa Tram stop/station at the end of the shotengai to explore the line and all there is see, it's wonderful. You might just become another surprised fan of Tokyo's hidden gem 🤗😃

@Gazumi-inOZ Yea,lol. I am a big city girl & for people like me those areas are not so fun ! Also ,they are far away from city centers like Shibuya , Shinjuku ,Ginza ,etc.! Like I said previously, for people w kids ,so on will enjoy the areas ! There's an amusement park like Toshima-en.Btw,Jizodori is actually pronounced Jizou douri ,so,I did not get that right away ! Lol I know westerners, foreigners spell / pronounce many Japanese names wrong ! That's understandable, but hard for us ,Japanese to understand. I asked mom about Sugamo ,she replied that's an area known for elders to gathered & elderly people's hangout place . Thanks for your replies . 💜
@Gazumi-inOZ18 күн бұрын
@@spark_6710 Toshima-en amusement park actually closed in 2020 and is now the site of the Harry Potter theme park unfortunately 🫣, I wish I could have visited it before its closure. Approx 15-ish mins by train to bustling Shiibuya or Tokyo station isn't far for me 🤔 Thanks for the Jizou douri pronunciation I was going by the expats in Tokyo pronunciation. Yes Sugamo might not be the the hustling and bustling overcrowded "FUN" excitement area of Tokyo, but that's its charm, it's the exact opposite and the ideal place to encounter the real feel of local-life Tokyo, a rare experience in itself for most tourists. As originally said, use Sugamo as your base to explore all of the hustling and bustling areas of Tokyo, and absolutely make sure that you visit Sugamo/Otsuka for an experience that most tourists and even locals never experience 🤗

@Gazumi-inOZ I see ! I've forgotten about that ,I think . I've been living in California for 36years now & haven't been to Tokyo ,or Japan since 2001. Thanx for the info. I remember that was far ...& Ymanote line might had changed ,mom feels it was very far & needed to change lines . It could have been drastically changed ? I rarely used the Ymanote line when living in Tokyo tbh. Well,hustling / bustling is a big part of life in Tokyo !! That's what I loved about Tokyo all of my life !! Fast speed ,not slow life. I love the countryside of Japan,though ! Kyoto is my No.1 fave of Japan. Thanks so much for your replies ! Take care !! 💜

Shibuya is overcrowded with tourists. You will not get a feel of living like a local while in Japan. It takes forever to get around by foot because simply it is hard to move through the crowds. The drunk people make the station area feel sleezy at night and the next morning, making it not an idea place for families. Shibuya is a great place to visit, but stay? I would say no. I would recommend The Tokyo Station area. (11-year resident of Japan- Tokyo)

@deaddrunkgamer7399 I will be going to akiba again in a few days. My 4th time already. It gives me a nostalgic vibe. I am really into anime and trading- and other cards. The ichiban kuji, coco curry, wagyuu steaks. The buildings with anime figures on 10 floors.. Idk it just has everything I need, the only downside that there is not much left to do after 11 pm. No nighthlife, no izakaya's. That was the only reason I was considering shinjuku/shibuya. But in the end it had to be Akiba again ^-^

@@aleksandarnjegric6873 Fair enough, though if most things close that early in akihabara why not stay at a place that have some nigh life once you're done in Akihabara? Ueno isnt that far away from akihabara so if you're not afraid of walking a lil bit you should find a bunch of Izakayas there or on the way there.

@deaddrunkgamer7399 actually did that once before. Went to an izakaya that was open in ueno till 1am, afterwards we went to karaoke. That's something I will keep in mind for sure. Are there any izakayas you could recommend in Ueno? (Preferably one That's still not closed after 1 am). But yeah other than that the night life isn't that much of an factor for me, which is why I still went for Akiba and if we want to go once or twice to a place for clubbing like roppongi or shibuya we can still do that, even if we're based in Akiba :) speaking of, I am also open for izakaya and party locations in roppongi and shibuya
