Thanks for this great video. I totally agree with you, Shinjuku is the best place for me to stay in Tokyo. I am not a nightlife person, but I enjoy the vibe, the many restaurants and bars, shops, conbinis and the great acess to public transport (mostly train and subway, but also bus, with the Express Bus Terminal). Also, so many attractions are reachable without having to travel for ages. I usually stay in Nishi Shinjuku, because its quiet, but just a 10 minutes walk away from the action and from Shinjuku station. The last time I was in Tokyo, I also stayed in Kabuchiko, on the border to Korea town, and that was also great (I love Korean food, and I dont find the red light discrict unsafe (as a woman)).

We stayed in asakusa nice and peaceful at night, you got right that train rides where long but that made us plan ahed what we did on the day to make sure we did what we needed to do and see and staying close to a train or metro exist station makes a world of difference it might be a couple extra $$ but walking out the train exit and be at your hotel in less than 5 minutes is so awesome, thanks for this awesome video update and great ideas where to stay

Shinjuku is very rundown and extremely busy, don't stay there unless you're really into nightlife. Asakusa is a very nice area, with cheap accomodation and plenty of tourist attractions around. The stretch between Shimbashi and Yurakucho is great in terms of good hotels and plenty of shops and restaurants. You also have the Yamamote Line at your doorstep, and will be only minutes away from Tokyo Station, Akihabara, etc. Ueno, meh, it's not the nicest place in Tokyo and a bit detached from the central areas. I enjoy staying in Odabia, although hotel options are a bit limited (Grand Nikko is my favourite). You spend the day in Tokyo, enjoying the hustle and bustle, and retreat to this "resort-style" man-made island in the evening with great views of central Tokyo. Odaiba also offers 3 major shopping malls with plenty of restaurants and even a nice little beach.

Hi harb, i completely agree with your ratings, even for Yokohama which i had not considered as a place to stay. Shinjuku is definitely THE place to stay in Tokyo for all the reasons you mentioned. Pity the hotel rates are pretty expensive, almost as expensive as Shibuya's. It was only because of the higher hotel prices that I chose #2 choice over #1. I have stayed at Tokyo station in my last 3 trips to Japan so i have gotten used to Tokyo area especially Shintomicho and Kanda areas hahaha.

I'm a fan of staying in Akasaka. There's enough within walking distance between it and nearby Roppongi if you want to eat or drink near your hotel, there's the Akasaka-Mitsuke Station nearby that can you get you to Shibuya, Shinkjuku or Tokyo Station in less than 15 minutes without changing lines, but it's relatively quiet at night. But I'm too old for partying late at night so I could be biased. :)

I wholeheartedly agree with your #1. Shinjuku is the only place that we stay in Tokyo. In addition to being a major transportation hub, Shinjuku has all the shopping, restaurants, and entertainment you could want. The east side is bustling and great for nightlife, and the west and south sides are more quiet and relaxed. We really like Takashimaya (especially) and Isetan with their depachikas and numerous restaurants on the upper floors. Venturing out of Shinjuku to visit different places during the day is fun, but the best part is that you always return to Shinjuku.

I would also put Akasaka as some people have said on the list, although there aren't too many hotels/airbnbs in that area. The other downside is that this area is a bit expensive as well, around $90-120/night My reasons are: 1. You're close to Tameikie Sanno Station, which is conjoined with Kokkaigijidomae station. So you have access to both the Ginza line and Marunouchi line. Also the Akasaka station if you plan to transfer into Shibuya. Ikebukuro is a bit farther to get to from there. Roppongi is within walking distance. 2. Lots of restaurants (chains and local ones) in the downtown area next to the Tokyo Broadcasting (TBS) HQ. Lots of bars as well in that area. Roppongi is nearby if you're into clubs. 3. To get back to Narita Airport, just take the limousine bus from the ANA intercontinental. No need to deal with trains. 4. If SHTF or anything bad happens, all the consulates/embassies are in the area.

The choice of where to stay should be based on your objectives. I have stayed in Shinagawa, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Akihabara, Akasaka, Hamamatsucho, Kawasaki, and Yokohama. For a little peace and tranquility in a bustling metro, Hamamatsucho is great. Sure transportation access isn’t great, but staying in the shadow of Tokyo Tower is a nice turn of pace.

Just came back from Tokyo and stayed in four different areas. (I guess I like to punish myself lugging bags in the heat) Akihabara isn’t listed and for good reason. Nice area to spend a day, nightlife is midrange, restaurants not as plentiful as other areas. Spent one night near Tokyo Station for the Shinkansen convenience. I could be wrong but nightlife and restaurant options (outside of station) were limited. Shinjuku was excellent, everything that was mentioned. I suggest Shinagawa, especially if you're only looking for a reasonably comfortable room at one of the large nearby salaryman hotels. It's not the most exciting area in Tokyo, but it has access to a large number of train lines and shinkansen, and is easily the best if you're on a short stay and are flying from Haneda.

I stayed in Akihabara while I was in Tokyo. And everything is great. I am considering staying there again. The only thing that bothers me is the lack of night activities. After 8 pm, there is not much left to do. A few arcades might be open up to 10-11 pm, but that's it. There is no izekayas (like omode yokocho, e.g). No late dining. I remember im 2015. The Coco curry was open until 4 am. Same for the crapes in the middle of Akihabara. In 2023, however, the Coco curry closed at 10 pm, I think.. But Ueno, as far as I've heard is pretty close to Akihabara and has izekayas, restaurants, etcetera, that are well accessible during the night times. So is this true, or might shinjuku be the better place for me to stay in next time?

I have been in Tokyo 7 times. At the beginning I was staying in Shinjuku area, then I realized that the key is to stay close to the Yamanote line and explore the city from there. My favorite locations are Gotanda and Tamachi. Lately I prefer Tamachi area since it is quiet and the hotels are not that expensive. Yamanote and Mita station are very close to the hotels in that area. Next time I will try to stay close to the Kanda area which also offers good hotels at reasonable prices. I agree that Agoda is one of the best site to get good deals in Japanese hotels. Thanks for sharing!

Visited Shinjuku today. It was too large and extremely busy. Sure, it has all the train lines on tap but it's could easily take a you 20/30 minutes just to get to the line you're looking for. Owing to just how massive the damn station is.

Hi! I'm getting a headache from all this research on hotels! My boyfriend and I are spending 4 days in Midsouji area in Osaka and then 4 days in Tokyo. Was planning on ueno because we are staying during halloween and we heard that it is absolutely crazy in Shibuya area. We are not familiar with train systems so I thought Shinjuku would be too stressful. We can't legally participate in nightlife where we live so would like to try it out in Japan but not big drinkers. What is your experience with halloween? I heard it is hard to get into restaurants and bars and it is crazy for the whole weekend leading up to it.

Not too hard to get into bars and restaurants on Halloween ... as long as you're not in the Shinjuku or Shibuya area. Could hang out in a bar outside of that area at the beginning and then make your way to the halloween area! Let me know if you have more questions!

Shimbashi's transport system not as extensive as the ones on Harb's list here. I think you should look elsewhere. You should stay at Shinjuku instead. If not, then even Ikebukuro is fine. Shibuya is great too, but i find the hotels are the most expensive among Harb's list.

Shimbashi station is on the yamanote loop for you to use your jr pass. There was a lot of food places on the west side of the station. It is close to Tokyo station, akihabara, I had to go to Tokyo station to get a train to Tokyo Disneyland, and you can take a Shinkansen to Osaka from Tokyo station or shinagawa station they have close to the same travel time close to 3hr trip goes by quick though. I just used my jr pass so I just stayed on the loop I know there were other trains that cut through the city to make it in less time but I played it safe and stayed on the loop. Take a big backpack comes in handy. I think it comes down to what you want to do honestly if it’s nightlife Shibuya and shinjuku area would be your best bet because once trains shut down you have to walk or take a taxi to your hotel and taxis aren’t cheap.
