I liked the movie but it was kind of boring. I felt like it was WAAAAY better than captain marvel. Thos e are good actresses so IMO it was obviously the writers let me down. The jokes felt childish but the violence and the content of the writing was really adult it left me confused I wondered "who is this for". But I liked the action i just wanted to see the girls kick ass. It really reminded me of transformers which I loved, but i cant remember what it was about i just wanted to see bad asses, kick ass. @swimmyswim4174 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It works on so many levels-it illustrates Harley’s fractured psyche, but also works as ironic black humor. I feel like sometimes in action movies, the torture/interrogation/etc scenes can be kind of exploitative or unnecessarily violent to try to raise the stakes in the narrative. The sequence does a great job at avoiding torture porn while still building Sionis up as a serious threat.

I appreciate you taking the time to cover the Cass Cain discourse and add your thoughts on it! Because I do think it’s a complicated issue but I wish people would be more mindful about the fact that the movie is directed by an Asian woman. chalking the issue up to just erasure doesn’t really feel accurate to me when as you pointed out, Cass Cain has either never been handled by a Asian writer, and the white writers who came up with her were playing into a lot of loaded stereotypes. I’ve seen people from a variety of circles complain abt BoP’s Cass Cain and it’s inaccuracy but it’s become this mix of people who mean well and take issue with the erasure of disability while not understanding the stereotypes that play into her original characterization, and fanboys who are just annoyed Cass isn’t like the comics with zero awareness of what’s actually wrong with her. I just think people should be more trusting of Cathy Yan? As an Asian woman myself, as much as I like Cassandra Cain, her original characterization does make me very uncomfortable. Anyway Birds of Prey rules. Im not really in a marvel or dc boat tbh, I get more excited following a director’s work vs. rly getting attached to any marvel characters in particular (Ryan Coogler & Taika Waititi have my heart)
@Princess_Weekes4 жыл бұрын
I'm in the same boat with Coogler and Taika. Also, I appreciate your feedback cause I didn't want to step on anyone's toes with Cass, but I do feel like we need to be more aware that a lot of things about her that are "cool" are also rooted in problematic tropes that may not actually be worth accurately adapting. One of the things I did love about Titans was them bringing in Jericho and having him being an Asian person with disabilties, but also have so much personality. But I think you need a series to get into all the nuance of that and not just one movie. Plus Ella is so cute!!!
@R0SE7274 жыл бұрын
MelinaPendulum oh agreed, Ella is super cute and I loved her in the movie! When I saw this video a part of me was wondering and maybe hoping a little that you’d cover the discourse bc it still feels more mindful when the topic covered by another woman of color, and you didn’t disappoint. I appreciated that you acknowledged the different facets of the issue. Don’t worry, no toes were stepped on! It’s just a little disheartening when the issue gets reduced to old Cass = good, new Cass = bad when it’s much more complicated than that. And it’s sad when the discourse gets attached to and associated w a young woc like Ella! She deserves better!

Huntress is my girl and I was SO happy with how they wrote/played her in this movie because they got her. They truly understood the character and played her with complexity instead of just as a violent psychopath and other woman for male characters to have affairs with. The biggest point where I knew they had her right was showing how caring she was to Cassandra (ex. giving Cassie her brother's toy car to comfort her during the big fight), because Helena's a teacher and fiercely protective of children. It's one of my favorite aspects of her character (trying to protect others from going through the trauma she went through) and they made time for that in the movie. I also love that Margot Robbie walked the walk of using her success to extend a ladder to provide opportunities for as many women as she could. Yes Harley is the central figure, but she showcases every other character and ultimately, as you said, was the catalyst to set the Birds of Prey on their path, but wasn't the focus of their team or the reason they bonded. They teamed up for Cassandra and because they're all good people like that. I so wish we could get sequels and spin-offs for the BOPs, but given how the studio just abused and trashed Batgirl, I don't have high hopes.

Cassandra Cain was a character deeply influenced by the 90's, and there were always the obvious related problems. She was still the only character that ever got me to buy a DC comic, so there must have been something done right. I'm all for changing the character to remove the iffy parts, you could also just ignore her, DC certainly usually does. But I just don't see the merit of giving what's practically a completely new character her name. That being said I'm not used to legacy focused comics, so I don't know how easyit is to seel a completely original character to the audiance for such a movie.

Loved that vids, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Only one thing made me tick just a bit : Cassandra is half white and half Chinese. And she never lacked emotional communication, she lacked conventional oral communication. She is often a lot more expressive and in touch with her emotions than the other characters around her, which is a cause of frustration because she often doesn't know how to make people understand how she feels. That's how I always saw her anyway, maybe I'm really really wrong. I love the movie Cass by the way, she's great :). Comic book Cass is my fav Batgirl, I would have love to see her keep the mantle and Steph become her Robin. They really complete each other great.

Given how much I enjoyed the movie I was so glad I actually gave it a shot. Funnily enough, as bad as I thought the trailers were I ultimately gave it shot because I thought "Well fuck I sat through Suicide Squad, the least I can do is give this movie a fair chance". I actually meant to see this movie at least a 2nd time in the cinemas but ultimately never got the chance.

For me personally, I'm a huge Harley Quinn fan. Like, when my family are uncertain about what to get me for a present for Christmas or my birthday the go-to is Harley Quinn related. My two favorite colors are red and black and it's just a whole thing. I love her characterization of an insane psychologist casually psycho-analyzing people and using those abilities to her advantage. When Suicide Squad came out, I instantly saw it in theaters and loved it. It may not have been the best film thematically, but it was fun. I loved Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. So when BoP came out, I ignored all critique about the movie and consumed every trailer with the thought of: "A movie about Harley told by Harley. I am there." And I saw it. And I loved it. Of course, my opinion will always be biased based on my love of the character. But, then again, that can also make me more critical of her in movies if I feel the character isn't done justice. She was done justice here and I love it.

female super hero movies for me by rank: wonder woman and birds of prey equally, captain marvel after. -Wonder woman tripped at the finish line with the random erjb at the end (executive meddling). I liked most of the things about this. -birds of prey hilarious and fun. a great romp. i feel like the hand-to-hand action scenes could have used a bit more training. I felt like the hits weren't strong enough? I had a similar problem with John Wick 3. pls don't come for me lol. -I like CM's message but there was TOO MUCH military propaganda. Also she should have ended up with her "beSt FRIend" yeah no they were definitely more than friends lmfao.

I am so glad I found your channel. Those last five minutes made me feel so, not gratified but the word is escaping me because YOU WERE SPEAKING MY WORDS. I'm a diehard DC fan and it is KILLING me dedication Marvel is getting when I remember bringing up comics to a girl who had an iron man sticker and she told me she preferred "real" books but she will see every Marvel movie. I don't care about those characters but I will watch every damn DC movie even when I think they are trash because I love DC and I want to see my faves get the love I have for them and instead every time I mention comics it's all "who's your favorite avenger". No. I want to tell you about my favorite Titan. I want to talk to you about Milestone. I want to debate about the different Robins and joke about Darkseid eating from a veggie platter. (Also all the non superhero comics that could use love or you know, even recognition by the rest of the world for even existing). Birds of Prey was everything I wanted even if on first watch the face ripping so on display was a bit too much for me and I'm so worried we're not gonna get more of that. But you know what, imma still be watching these DC movies. Also now your videos because I found your channel this weekend and you are preaching to the choir over here in a manner way more eloquent than I'm able to get with my comic book club so my newly subscribed blerd self WILL be taking notes. Been loving your content, love it more now that I know not only are you a black female nerd after my own heart, you and I are aligned on the DC/Marvel spectrums while living in a Marvel world. So much joy coming from over here. Please keep it up.

The hairtie scene in Birds of Prey is just as iconic to me on a personal level as Batman fighting with an actual bat in The Batman. It's one of those rare "HELLYEAH!!! FI-NAL-LY! YESSSS!! *standing ovation*" moments other movie goers might hate me forever for, but IDGAF.

omg your feelings at the end about how DC characters are finally getting movies but so many of them aren't very good? I feel that SO HARD. I LOVED Birds of Prey because it started really feeling like they were giving some of my favorite characters an actual good movie. Black Canary and Huntress are some of my favorite characters!! And they were great!! But I haven't seen a lot of the DCEU movies because I felt like Man of Steel was SUCH betrayal of Superman's character. I watched all 10 seasons of Smallville, Lois & Clark, animated justice league...I love film adaptations of these characters, but the recent films haven't hit for me. I'm so glad I saw Birds of Prey in theaters, though.

Your breakdown of each of the main characters is spot-on! I'm glad I saw Birds of Prey while it was still in theaters... and while going to theaters was still A Thing We Could Do. I'm a long-time Harley Quinn fan (one of my favorite characters to cosplay), but the press around the film was so bad and I was so burned out on mediocre superhero movies, I almost didn't give it a shot. I ended up seeing it alone on a weeknight after work. Also, I have to say, I adore that Rey art you have there just chilling on top of your bookshelf.

I had decided to see BoP via streaming when I saw the trailers, but then Gail S. dropped a Twitter thread about her visit to the set and I was like “well, paying full ticket price”. Regarding Wonder Woman: you’re right and you should say it. I also refuse to stand by any iteration of that character that uses the garbage “daughter of Zeus” backstory. And Snyder was absolutely a terrible choice to interpret Superman. Thanks for another great video.
@roguemeteorite67784 жыл бұрын
I'm not that familiar with wonder woman (I only know her from the movie). Would you mind explaining what's wrong with the daughter of Zeus thing?
@snakesnoteyes4 жыл бұрын
rogue meteorite so it’s really two things: the first being that the powerful woman in DC’s trinity gets her power from her dad (as opposed to being blessed by the goddesses in the Greek pantheon) is bad optics (to say the least), and the second is that in actual Greek mythology as well as the in universe mythology Zeus has been a rapist and and a general misogynist. He was behind Heracles’ enslavement of the Amazons and lust for Artemis of the Banna (a very long story) was the catalyst for the fall of Paradise Island and tying her power to that is just gross.
@roguemeteorite67784 жыл бұрын
@@snakesnoteyes Thanks for explaining. I definitely agree about the most powerful amazon getting her power from a male god being pretty bad. Thanks for explaining the other reasons too. I hadn't heard that about dc lore before. I did know in greek mythology Zeus was a rapist but I didn't know he was in dc too.
@snakesnoteyes4 жыл бұрын
rogue meteorite In DC lore Zeus actually gets replaced by Athena as the head of the pantheon because he caused the fall of Paradise Island because he lacks mercy
@roguemeteorite67784 жыл бұрын
@@snakesnoteyes Athena being the head of the pantheon sounds pretty cool actually. I can see what you mean now about it being bad that wonder woman was Zeus's daughter.

I didn't even see this movie at first - I might've if we weren't already on lockdown - but after seeing a video on how good it was, I decided to give it a try and oh my gosh, what a breath of fresh air! I'm not a big fan of superhero movies (lately they're all kind of the same) but I loved how fun this movie was, how different, and how committed to itself it was. I loved the themes and it felt SO obvious that there were so many women involved in its production, without being a "girl power!" movie. I could go on and on about all the things I loved that I hadn't seen in other movies of the genre.
