I think religion should always be taught, but taught as fiction or legend, like Greek or Roman mythology. Religion is a part of culture and a culturally diverse world needs to appreciate the views and beliefs of past and present religions. But children must always be allowed to make their own choices about what they want to believe. If a child wants to be religious then fair enough.

God is not a myth, he is real. So you should never teach it like a myth. If you're an athiest, than you shouldn't teach it to your child, let you kid go out to the world and learn about it themselves. Let them make the decision. If you treat it like it's fake, then they will believe it is fake, that's not letting the kid believe what they want at all.

@@fuzzydorito6105 nobody is teaching their children how to be an atheist. But everybody HAS to teach their children that they have an option. Gamaliel I don't know who you've met. And I'm certain there are religious people out there who are like that. But almost all of the religious people I meet aren't like that. Well, yes they do encourage that their kids stay in that church when they're older, but that's just normal. Most atheists encourage their kids to stay an atheist as well. Now, if the children don't want to stay in the church, I think they should wait until they're 18 (unless they are an atheist's house). Since they're still young and growing. Also, if they live under their parent's roof, they need to accept the fact that they need to respect their parent's wishes until they are old enough to think for themselves.

As a child, I'd often cry a lot because I was so scared of going to hell. And the teachers made it worse when they described how we'll get tortured eternally there. Keep in mind that I was a CHILD and I was too sensitive at that time. I felt really guilty all the time for not praying or for stealing that bottle of glitter. I even got nightmares because they told us there were jins (kinda like demons) every where especially at night and in the bathrooms. That's how I have an irrational fear of darkness up until now I'm still afraid of the dark, even after I stopped believing in those stuff. A religion that's supposed to be all loving and caring gave me a fucking phobia. Just how ironic is that?

Great video. When I was a kid I had no choice but to go to Hebrew School for 4 years and then get Bar Mitzvahed. My mom wouldn't take no for an answer, no matter how much I pleaded with her. I had to go Tuesdays and Thursdays after regular school and one day of the weekend. Most of my friends were not Jewish, so while they were out having fun, I was trapped in sheer misery in subject matter that I despised. To make matters worse, my older sister never had to go, since most Jewish girls don't. My mom wasn't involved in the temple herself and was not very religious, so I didn't know why it was so important to her that I go. I didn't find out until many years later that I had to go because that's what my very religious grandfather, her father, who was never close to me, wanted. I felt completely used and unimportant. So what you said about losing a bond with your parents later on was very true in my case.

Even when I was about 7 years old when I started really getting exposed to Christianity I questioned it a lot. I used to think "if everything was created at once, wouldn't Adam and Eve be living with dinosaurs? " and " if the bible says killing is wrong, then why did god kill millions of people?" No one forced me it was my own choice. I can see the difference in believing in god rather than not. At my work place people constantly swear and make dirty and inappropriate jokes. Most of them are said from people who have told me there atheist or just don’t believe in god or Jesus. I my self am not perfect but I strive to do my best to be good. God seats he will bless us if we follow his ways witch are very simple. As a Christian I do my best to be a light by not swearing or talking dirty and taking a stand for what’s right. I care about you and don’t want see you make a wrong decision. My litle baby girl and I were reading the story of Baby Jesus, Herodes and the like. I had already told her about how good and loving God was. But when we got to the part where Herodes ordered the butchering of infants, she looked at me in horror and said: 'But..isn't God all-powerful? Did he let him kill all the babies?" Reluctantly, I did say yes. She began to cry and said: 'I don't like God, dad! God is mean! He let him kill babies!" It hit me pretty hard, but she was right. It got worse when she learned that God actively went on random genocides himself, to the point where she said: "I will make God say sorry and make him nice!" It was..quite the thing, really. Adorable, to say the least.

It was Herods own volition to execute the babies because he wanted to kill baby Jesus. I think it had to do with the fact that God didn't want to interfere with the free will of humans, but I personally find that reason to be questionable and inadequate because sometimes intervention is needed if it means innocent lives are about to be butchered, regardless if all babies go to heaven.

I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out how to address religion honestly with my kid, while having religious relatives that I'm fond of. I pretty much imagined a sitcom style scenario where my future 5 year old hears the word "Jeesus" and says to Grandma, "Oh yeah mommy told me that you guys think there's this guy called God that made up everything himself.... but we don't believe in that, it sounds really silly." /cue laugh track as I do a spit take with my water /fade to black Either that, or religious family members "teaching" my kid about Jeesus before I ever talk to him about it. I'd have to undo it all without sounding like an asshole. Even tho it's kinda dickish to teach someone else's kid religion, but that's family amirite?

I am an atheist, but I do plan to teach my kid(s) about religions (note the plural) in order to understand the perspectives from different cultures. I think if you don't understand someone else's religion, then you miss out a big part of understanding their culture. And learning about different human cultures is obviously important. Also - when i teach about religion, i wouldn't teach it like ti's true. I would just state it as what it states, and then ask my kid "does this make sense to you?" This would teach my kid to develop critical thinking. I think it's equally dangerous to teach your kid that "there is no god, jesus is not a god" versus saying "ok, there is this one book which teaches that jesus is a god, what do u think? do u believe? why or why not?"

I live in a Catholic country. I'm a teenager who doesn't believe in God and I finally managed to make my mum sign a document which would let me not to go on RE lessons. You see, in England during RE you study different religions and it sounds lovely to me, I'd love to study that too but unfortunately, in my country it's different. In my country on RE you do nothing but worship Jesus and talk about how we should feel blessed and obey him. Most of the 'teachers' (3/4 of them are nuns) are acting like a bunch of fanatics, honestly. One day in my class we wanted to discuss the influence of the church on politics but then the nun just yelled at us that we should stop talking about this. She also tried to make us think that the only happiness that is real is a happiness to be a Christian. The other situations that make us happy aren't making us so in fact (which is a total bullshit if you ask me). The worst thing is that it is a taboo. Our class decided to ask a few teachers to tell what they think of her 'theories'. They either brushed us off or said that it's inappropriate to say their opinion. What is more, my mother is ashamed of that I'm not attending RE. I've been fighting with her 2 years. But the best thing is- she isn't religious really. Weird, huh? I think so too but in my country, when she was younger, everyone used to be religious and if somebody wasn't, he or she was treated like a lowlife. But the times change! And she just wouldn't understand that. Fortunately, I managed to make her let me not to attend RE but I just pity students in my class who weren't as lucky as I was. Yes, most of them don't even believe in God, they are forced by their parents to go to RE. This situation is just mind-blowing... (How I wish my mother could speak English, I'd show her this video)

You do not have proof of atheism, because atheism is the refusal to believe something without proof. That's the beginning and the end of the conversation. You're fighting a losing battle with a strong believer, because if they were interested in rationality they'd already be an atheist - a perfectly sensible and reasonable position that states that it is irrational to believing in something before its existence has been proven. If you're really interested in genuinely arguing with theists - with the view to maybe getting them to think about their own beliefs, read up on Epistemology. I'm in England too; RE was taught in the same way as Greek mythology. It never occurred to me until *much* later that Noah's Ark was, in the eyes of some people, any different to Perseus and the Minotaur; a nebulous story that doesn't stand up to scrutiny and, at best, makes for a fun cartoon on Sunday morning... :D

He pondered on my statements. He later said that he will still remain a Christian, and that me being an atheist is not such a big deal. While I am a huge atheist, (I would go so far as to say that the idea of religion is ridiculous) and I agree with many of the points in this video, I still think that teaching children about religion is a good idea. I believe that it will make much more rounded individuals if children are brought up to understand the religions of others. If we stop teaching religion, it won't make religion go away and so teaching children about the beliefs of the people they will meet will help them to empathise better with others and be less prejudice towards others.

I was heavily discouraged from going to Uni and it's at that point I realised that they were afraid that I'd be confronted by critical thinking and apply it to the 'truth' I'd been raised in. It controls ppl by making sure all your friends are in the organisation and you'll be lonely once you make the choice to leave. Anyway I had my first child this year and although it's super early I've decided to keep him away from all the illogical thinking and mind control by threat of expulsion. Keep the videos coming! I agree you should be aloud to choose your own religion and belief. My parents made me go to catholic classes and schools but I'm actually more of a Buddhist now. I'm not an atheist I'm a Buddhist more or less and I chose that on my own. The problem is is that kids can't choose what they wanna do if they aren't educated on there options. Say the kid is only taught science and he knows all this science stuff and then he's told religion is a thing. That's not a fair choice I think they should be taught on all topics so then they can choose for them selves.

I am only 18. So I don't know much about raising kids. But I think there is a difference between teaching kids religion and raising them religious. I don't think they should be told to be religious. But raising them in a religious environment( not a stiff and unquestionable) will be better for them to understand that religion. I was raised in Hinduism by my parents. But they never objected me about questioning religious beliefs. As a result I have developed a better understanding of my religion than a person who was never exposed to it. So I have accepted good parts of my religion and rejected bad ones. I understand that while there are many illogical things in Hinduism, there are many scientific ones to. If I were an outsider, I would have judged it through a single lense. So I think it is good to teach children about religion but being open to questions. Besides if I weren't raised in my religion, I would have missed all the fun festivals that I enjoyed so much as a child and still do.
@hmgrraarrpffrzz97637 жыл бұрын

I'm 19 and I think , Instead of teaching children religion , I would teach them science , philosophy and show him biographies of good and bad people . Let him grow morally and logically. Everything you say in this video is amazing. Kids should be able to grow up and find out what they believe in. They should find out these things by themselves. Everyone has a different point to life but I think (and this is my opinion) that everyone has a point to that and religions promote the opposite of that. I have always been very open to other people's beliefs and religions but we can't push kids to believe something just because they are our kids. We will never know for certain if we have an after life or how our world was created. We don't know if the anything is real. I can ask questions all day but just because there are no certain answers to anything so we shouldn't try make answers just because there aren't any. I know for a fact that a large majority of the people reading this comment will disagree and I totally respect that. There are no buts of ifs. I am not going to carry on because I respect everyone if you have something to say about what I just said feel free to reply. This is my opinion everyone has a different one. So we shouldn't push our next generation to have the same opinion as someone else. They should figure that out themselves. Everyone has to make there own decisions, because if we all followed the same thing this world would be very different. 🌍❤️💙

I do think people are going overboard saying this is brainwashing and/or abuse, though, cause those are really loaded terms, and aren't children entitled to aspects of their culture, which includes religion? I'm not saying being raised religious can't be harmful, but I think using brainwashing and abuse is a bit much.

I think that it depends how far the parents go about it. Extreme cases can be counted as abuse/brainwash whereas others not so much.

Telling children that there's a storybook named "the bible" sounds absolutely okay, but to teach the kids that these things are true, without any kind of evidence is wrong. Then scaring them with hell, so that they won't question the belief is basically the definition of brainwashing, so don't say that "brainwashing" is to much, if anything it should be called "Christianity, one of the worlds biggest brainwashing". Also: How many of the children have grown up and started killing people because of their beliefs? How many have discriminated homosexual people or atheists? Way too many. Then let me ask you "How many people are killing people BECAUSE they are atheists? none that I know of. So I'd say that majority of religions (atleast) are child abuse.

Davvan Christians believe the Bible is true, so they're going to teach their kids that it's true. Parents almost always teach their kids their own set of values. Religious teachings can be damaging, but it depends on what's being taught. Calling it abuse when their are people out there suffering actual abuse is pretty insulting to them.

One time I asked my mom when I was younger "If God had to create us then who created god?" My mom was all like oh well god is infinite and bs like that i don't hate her or anything but sometimes she goes to far one time there was a tornado warning and my mom was getting ready to go to church I didn't go cuz duh!? When I heard that warning on the Tv I ran to my mom and begged her to not go to church. She did. I cryed my 8 yr old ass off while listening to lighting, tree branches falling, and wind thinking my mom was gonna die (she lived btw but she had to stay at a friends place cuz it was flooded with rain) my mom doesn't know when to stop lol. This and so many other incidents made me hate church and which is why I hate going. My friend says I'm an athiest cuz I was forced to go lol I don't think that is true but I can see her perspective lol. I just came home from 7 hours of freakn church. I hate myself lol. Sorry for ranting.

When I was younger, I was a very smart child, and I would ask extremely advanced religious questions. My parents, and other leaders in our church, would answer my questions with "I don't know, maybe you'll just have to ask god when you get to heaven." Most people wouldn't realize this, but because people continuously gave me that answers, I once sat in my room for 4 hours, ready to kill myself. Not because I hated my life, but because I wanted to meet god and ask him all of my questions. Later that year, I realized that nobody knew the answers, because there were none. That's when I started to doubt religion. I realized, that if I, a 9 y/o, could confuse older people with great questions, then there had to be something wrong.

My family isn’t even all that religious and do and say sinful stuff but when it comes to homophobic stuff it’s always “God doesnt want this” “You’re going to hell” shit trying to use their religion as a shield when it’s useful for them

Just so you guys know, God didn't kill Jesus. Jesus is God, he willingly laid down his life for all of us so that we may be with him in Heaven. You just gotta believe, and if you believe, you should be acting good. You should try to not sin but everyone does, you just try to be the best person you can! Jesus is still alive you people. Also, what God tells us to do is what is best for us. I'm talking about the God of Abraham and Christians... In the Bible, God says to raise your children in the ways of the lord.

I love the content of your videos Hemant, and the messages you get across. Not to be a dick, but I would like to offer some constructive criticism; go over your videos once you think they're ready to be uploaded. This video and the last one have scenes of you saying the same thing twice. At 2:55 in this video you say 'but as they grow up they realise we have different methods for discovering the truth' and the same again at 3:01.

Man, this hits me pretty hard. I grew up in a very religious Christian Protestant/Baptist family but funnily enough stopped after my siblings & I became adults. We no longer attend church, pray, or mention anything religious anymore. Thank goodness! My oldest sister however has had 3 kids & has started indoctrinating in a similar manner as to how we were as kids. I feel kind of bad for her because I feel like she needed to do that because it was the only way she knew how to raise children, but I haven't told her that these are my thoughts on that, nor do I know if I ever should. This is one of the reasons why I don't want to have children though, although deep down inside I believe I actually do want to but there's many others reasons why I don't want to.

This is so true, scientifically it’s been proven that a child up until the age of 7 is running off of their subconscious mind. What that means is that whatever you teach them is what they’ll believe. This is why it’s so crucial to critically review your beliefs so you’re sure they’re your actual beliefs and not just someone else’s

If you're going to teach your kids about God, make sure you show God. Don't just talk about him and point to his name in the Bible. If you don't show God, your kids won't really believe in him. They'll simply pretend to. They'll claim to. That's really not the same.

My history teacher is a really smart guy. Whenever we talk about historical topics we end up talking about politics and sometimes controversial topics. He rarely ever gives out his opinion, because he knows as a teacher he has an impact on us and he didn't want to influence us. He always gives us facts and statistics about those topics, but he never gives out a bias.

The question he raised about Atheist parents wanting their children to be raised in religion just made me feel like he is a troll. What Atheist parent would want their kids brainwashed into cults? Notice I used a capital A in Atheist and a lower case 'r' in religion. That is simply to highlight my sheer disgust for ALL religions. I remember sitting in rK (religious Knowledge back in the 70's at school) and being so bored that I just drew airplanes in my book after my mum and dad had taken me to see The Battle of Britain movie. I got caned for doing that. That violent, enforcement of THEIR beliefs upon me as a pre-teen child really made me grow into the person I am today. I am not an atheist, I am an anti-theist. I despise the brainwashing of kids, the hypocrisy, the child abuse, the terrorism, the 'we created morals'. All of it. We need to grow up as a species and take control of our world instead of pumping crap into it and poisoning it for our children. Focus on what we have in front of us instead of silly old fairy tale books that try to tell us what we should do. Get rid of all those losers pretending to be prophets taking your money every sunday to 'help improve the church roof', that just goes towards their next car or a hooker.

Finally someone I can be on board with. Religion has pumped more toxicity and hatred into communities than any atheists. Religion encourages division and intolerance for those who aren’t the same as you. I can’t fathom using a several millennia old book to try and describe modern day situations. The world evolves over time, there is no way that a book that old could hold up in these present days. And as for people saying “oH bUt thEY haD viSiOnS” whatever. You really think these visions of the future weren’t just the byproduct of a bunch of practically cavemen who still have absolutely no idea what’s going on eating random psychedelic plants?
