Exactly, zoom lens are the best for when you don't have enough time to switch lens. Your subject is not going to wait for you to decide which focal length you want to use or wait for you to switch your lens and set everything else up, especially animals such as birds and squirrels. Prime lens are great for when your subject is cooperating with you and you're able to get the right kind of settings and get close up shots without them walking or running away from you (i.e. people who are posing for you, nature (this doesn't include animals), cars that are not moving, etc.)
@Wft-bu5zc9 жыл бұрын
+Twz6790 Zooms are actually still vital to landscape photography. In rugged environments (i.e., the best ones) such as canyons, mountains, and bodies of water, you can't get certain pics without being able to zoom around, because you're not capable of moving around for miles.

+wtfwtfwtwfw35u23059872035 I dont see why having a 15mm 50mm 135mm prime and maybe a telephoto zoom shouldnt work. sure its risky to swap lenses. always. but at least landscapes dont run away while you switch lenses. although fast glass is not so necessary in landscapes(if you got space for the tripod), you can afford the time to use the sharpest glass .

Zooms are vital for wildlife/sports and landscape... In many cases with those types of photography you cannot just "move" to a different location to get better framing, so you need zoom. Primes I think are best for portraiture, street photography and macro. Plenty of zooms out there with just as good image quality as primes. Really, the only reason for primes is price (they are cheaper for equally good image quality).
@gur2629 жыл бұрын
+wtfwtfwtwfw35u23059872035 in many cases in photography, no matter what genre, zooming is helpful, but having a fast, supersharp and or lighter lens just as well! in landscape. well you can use more than one prime. Fast ultrawides are primes. also they are often sharper, and when you got time, you can go for the very best in quality. for sports it sure is useful, especially because you do not want the tiniest depth of field, but when you are in the right position to use a prime .. ....well zooms win in sports photography as i see it. in wildlife.. i dont know. you are never close enough? and in long lenses primes tend to be just sharper. look at people using the pentax q, which is demanding with lenses, to goto 1200mm equiv focal length and more. The good results are from primes. zooming is always great, but i prefer running around ( i do know that a different focal lengt is NOT the same as zooming) a lot but having fast glass.
@andyhaochizhang8 жыл бұрын

It depends what you're shooting and what environment you're in. I use zooms for event photography due to needing to shoot everything very quickly in both tight and open spaces. I will use either my 50mm or 100mm macro for studio work because I have the time to adjust the composition and move about - also the quality is much more important with editorial work. Really depends on how important quality is to you and what you're shooting for.

+Daniel Having one lens restricts the possible shots you can get, due to limitations on time and simple opportunity. Getting a close shot of a red fox with a 24mm is possible, but it means you have to dedicate a lot of time and planning to get it. And, if you consider how much you earn per hour, you can make a rough calculation as to whether it's worth getting a 400mm lens instead, and spend less time working to get said shot. But, it's definitely good not to get too hung up on equipment.

Basic advantage of primes (aside things like size/weight and marginally better optical performance) is that you get to "know" a certain focal length well. You get better compositions when you already know what you're gonna have without even looking through the lens. Also, people who only use zooms tend to just zoom instead of also moving to get the right relationship between objects. That's not a fault of the zoom lens, but it does explain why people frequently take better pictures with primes.
@noahtrath11 жыл бұрын
I think you are right about the zoom lenses but I sometimes like to artificially limit me in my options to think about the picture more. With street photography that means I like to use a 35mm prime. It limits me but it encourages me to keep creative about the picture taking process.
@Mekrath8511 жыл бұрын
That depends on what you shoot the most. I've tried both and they're both good lenses for the price. the 55-200 still is considererd a kit lens, well, because it is really probably a better choice would be the 70-300 VR but the price rises alot. The 35mm is just a perfect companion, I always have mine at hand and it never fall
@Guitarplayer21911 жыл бұрын
Well for telephoto lens for the 7D, use any L lens that you can afford/suits your optimal focal length for under $2,000 I'd use the 100-400mm, 70-200 (any of the versions depending on what you need/want) 300 f/4, 400 f/5.6. For a walk around, you can't go wrong with an L lens either, but we have more choice when it comes to these. L lens are optimized for full frame, we have crop, the 17-55mm EF-S is an amazing lens for crop bodies.

Each pixel can contain one or more element to represent colours. Most displays have 3 elements per pixel to represent Red Green and Blue. A PenTile Matrix Pixel has 5 elements. These elements give off a varying degrees of colour so that we get the impression of colours other than RGB.

The point is that zooms are so much more than 70-300. Like the fisheye zoom from Canon (8-15mm), or the always amazing 16-35II. But of course, going from 100 to 400 in a matter of seconds is great when a tele is needed. Best mix though: zooms at f/2.8, and primes with f/1.4. Personally I love having 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200 at 2.8, but the 85 f/1.4 and 50 f/1.4 just gives you the extra punch whenever needed.

For street photography, I prefer the flexibility of a 16 to 35mm or 24 to 70mm on my Nikon d700 (minus the battery grip). Out of the 2, my 1st choice would be 16 to 35 because it is much lighter. I would also always pack my 50mm1.8 D. No large camera bag. But at the end of the day, it is always down to personal choice.

@GuitarVader1311 жыл бұрын
prime lens cant be zoomed, but they do tend to have wider apertures so you can get some really nice shallow depth in your pictures. just google 50mm or 85mm 1.8 you wouldnt be able to get those kind of apertures on a zoom lens, well you wouldnt have been able to a few years ago but now we have some pretty amazing zoom lens that are starting to feel more like prime lens in a sense that you can shoot at 1.4 or 1.8

What I hate about some zooms, is that the aperture (iris) closes down as you zoom. So it could be a F 2.8 at the low end then drops to F 6.0 as you zoom to a max. Very annoying if the exposure is perfect at F 2.8. Give me constant aperture in a zoom any day.
@smypmc987111 жыл бұрын
That only happens with the low end zoom lenses. Most professional zoom lenses keep their max f stop consistent. My $500 Tamron f2.8 28-75, by no mean expensive, can shoot f2.8 in every focal length from 28-75mm. So this is not the actual issue of zoom lenses, but the quality/feature of certain low end lenses.
@katk92510 жыл бұрын
SMY PMC I have to agree on my LOVE for that Tamron 28-75mm f2.8. I have the older one, not the new VC one. I have even "replaced" it with a Nikkor 24-70 f2.8, which I use for video as it has all the time manual focus override, which I really need. However for day to day I still use my 5-7 year old $400 Tamron way more, as it has Macro and stops down all the way f32! Just because one lens is more expensive does not mean that another lens might not be better for your purpose, or have a different feature you want.
@katk92511 жыл бұрын
I actually want to point out that people tend to equate "zoom" with telephoto, and this is not always the case. My most used and favorite lens is the Nikkor 17-33m f2.8. I pretty much use 17 and 35 interchangeably as two alternate primes, just flipping the ring all the way, and very rarely use the range in the middle, though it happens. Great way to have my favorite standard, 35mm, and an ultrawide, at your fingertips.

True Frank! @judithmertiny39969 жыл бұрын
Sometimes manual mode is better then the priority modes when u you want a unique exposure. E.g. At night in aperture priority the camera will attempt to set the shutter speed to something ridiculously slow like 1/10 or even 1 second to achieve a "normal exposure" but if you are in manual you can set the aperture to something like 2.8 and the shutter speed to something more acceptable like 1/60 which will produce a darker image with less blur. Hope that makes sense :)

oh dear me, most of the worlds leading photographers use them... they obviously dont realise zooms suck. Thank god you are here to put things right! Lets just hope they see your comment in time to avoid publishing anymore pictures in National Geographic etc!

What's the best method besides a wire brush to clean dust off the NEX camera sensor?

I use both prime and zoom lens. In fact I use 50mm, 35mm and a 18-200mm. The next lens I will buy will be a 8mm fisheye (probably Rokinon).

IQ almost trumps all, budget allowing. Ever since getting the 20mm F/1.7 prime for my m4/3, I've never gone back to the 14-42mm kit lens... but I do have a 40-150mm zoom to use in a pinch too.

I have a nice 35-70 lens that also has a macro-section on it for a nice allrounder when I just go out and about for nothing specific. So it has a slightly wide angle and a slight zoom. But then I also have a 24-35 for wider angles (and I might get a 28mm prime additionally) and a 50mm prime (and another camera has a 55mm I believe). - So I do like my variable lens that can do a little bit of everything so that I don't have to "zoom with my feet" so much. But I do like some dedicated prime lenses when I know what I want and when I want it. Let's say I'm purely shooting portraits or some such thing, I won't bother with the 35-70. - But, to be honest, the reason I can go with multiple lenses is not because I'm rich, but because I use old-ass cameras for which the lenses aren't that expensive. Used, obviously... - But I do prefer a mix of both...

My actual lens is Sigma 17-70 mm f/2.8-4.0 and I'm really happy I got it. It's definitely a great value for the money - a decent basic lens with benefits :o)

Depends on what you shoot and how you like to shoot. Also BUDGET. I use both and love both.

Zooms...but that's just because I currently only have two primes for my DSLR: 50mm f/1.8 II, and 100mm Macro f/2.8. I'm saving up for a 135mm f/2.8L, 85mm f/1.2L II, and some tilt/shift lenses. But for now, I'll make do with my 24-70 f/2.8L and my magic drainpipe 80-200 f/2.8L. Those two lenses are currently my money makers.

Considering selling my 24-105mm L. Since I shoot most of my photos at 24mm, I am considering the 24-f1.4 but I shoot video, and what's better for the price than the Tamron f2.8, 24-70mm in that field with it's astonishing image stabilization for video and image quality? Thoughts?
