At a time there was only GoPro Hero 2 available with no timelapse or timer. DJI released their first Phantom I only in 2013. So yeah, now you can be all fancy, but back in a dayzz people had to be creative.

If you are gonna try, at least put a small parachute on.. it will help the camera facing down and also help it land slower so you can catch it...Make sure you toss it high enough though..

it really depends on the camera, most mid and high end cameras and most pentax cameras are at least moderately weatherproofed. but many cameras up to and around $1000 are not very good in incremented weather though there are steps you can take to lightly weatherproof your camera (like gaffer tape) or you can buy a cover/bag type thing for your camera. i personally use gaffer tape but i would not consider taking my camera out in as bad of weather as was in the beginning of the video.

There are also some filters to shut down all the light but the IR-light, but even those won't work if ur camera chip isnt able to handle IR. The result will be the same as with ur cap on, a pitch-black picture.

You should have used the 14mm f/2.8L on the 5D mark III rectilinear lens for those toss pics for better image quality. Looks like the 550D survived the harsh weather and hard use like a Champ.

Hey Kai...Why don't you just attach the camera to a few tethered party balloons, set the timer to say 30 seconds, see how high you can get it before it takes a pic and retrieve. If the party balloons aren't strong enough, go with a weather balloon. You'll probably get better results.

I'm not certain, but it looks a lot like the one i use, which is the Opteka HD2 x0.20 AF Fisheye, even if thats not the one, it's still a pretty good fisheye lense for just under £50.

He was consistent with his toss so that was comforting. But I thought it was stupid that he didn't use manual focus set to infinity to get a more reliable focus. It a nice demo tho I wouldn't do it with a dslr maybe a an xp50 or another shock proof type camera.

Most fisheye attachments are the same. All the ones you get that connect to your camera have the circle and black around it because its not an actual fisheye LENS. If you search in ebay, digital rev tv or another store they should have generic or actual fisheye attachments which you can put on your lens and do the exact same thing Kai was doing. There only like $30 and there very handy for skating videos etc.
