Thanks for sharing your perspective and advice on this topic that is so near and dear to the heart of many voice artists. It is interesting to hear that you are receiving so many reels with poor audio quality. With ACX's published technical requirements for audiobooks to serve as benchmarks, I would expect more submissions to be up to snuff from a sound quality standpoint. Unless, of course, we're speaking of very new voice artists who either haven't yet discovered ACX's standards or who don't know how to correct their audio quality when it falls short? In either case, they are lucky to have you to point them in a good direction to sort out their recording issues. Regarding cold reads, I recently began practicing my cold reading skills (or lack thereof) for 30 minutes a day. Oh, so humbling! I may need to up my practice to two 30-minutes sessions a day. You are so correct that knowing your weaknesses is critical to taking steps to improve. Thank you!

You’re most welcome. Most of the recordings I receive are not for audiobooks, but usually from other areas of VO. As my specialty is teaching novices, the low quality is to be a expected; as you know learning to hear what is good and what is not so good is an essential part of the voice over journey.

Thank you very much Gary, this is great advice! I have a question regarding Fiverr and pricing. I live in Malta and we have no infrastructure when it comes to this business, so royalties don't exist and neither do "buyouts", basically your regular price is a buyout. I have a reasonable rate per finished minute when it comes to commercial work, and of course I charge a different lower rate for audiobooks to account for bulk (usual commercial work is 1 minute here, 2 minutes there). When it comes to Fiverr, however, what is stopping a client from finding me on the platform just to get a cheaper price? Say my rate is 50 euros for a finished minute or up to a minute. Would it be reasonable to keep the same rate for Fiverr as your usual, and a clause that it's open to negotiation if it's a bigger project? I've seen fellow good-quality VOs charge literally 5-10 euros per gig where they'd otherwise charge 100 minimum. Pricing is probably my biggest hurdle, I either feel like i'm being greedy and clients will go elsewhere or selling myself short.

Yes pricing is a really tricky aspect to get right. Fiverr is a cheap & cheerful site so rates can be very low. Start with a Basic Gig = 150 words for $5 (3 days delivery or quicker if you feel comfortable) This includes 1 revision. As you gain traction in the platform you can then start to increase your fees accordingly.

@@GaryTerzza Thank you Gary, much appreciated. So it's a case of treating the site as it's own thing with "reputation". I will do just that :)

Thanks for this Gary - as always a very encouraging message - Stevie T (any chance of reviewing my demo reel by the way? I used your VO scripts I purchased from you - I'd be interested to hear what you think)

Ooops... not prevarication (certainly to be avoided! wink*) but 'procrastination' I think is to be avoided as per your final tip?

Sorry I'm late with the comment, but after that last bit , just had to run out and do an audition. I'm going to be cheeeky. now ..was your pop filter on a day off.

I try not to use the pop filter on videos as it tends to obscure my face (no bad thing some might say!) I hope I wasn’t popping too much 😆
