Excellent video! I was a member several years ago and booked several decent jobs as a part timer. Back then there was only the one Tier if I remember correctly (plus the free membership) I think I paid about 300 for the year. Eventually, I got fed up with the selection process. Don't get me wrong, I didn't think I was better than anyone else or should have been picked instead of another... what got me was that quite often, my audition wasn't even opened! The project would be marked "closed" as soon as they heard something they liked..leaving all the other entries in the lurch, unopened. How can you even have a chance to get selected if they don't even PLAY the audition. I also auditioned for several jingles, which requited music composition, recording, studio gear etc.. On top of that they needed the voice over of course. These would take several hours to complete just for the one audition. After having at least a half dozen submission remain unheard/unopened I decided to pack it in. It's one thing to be the wrong guy for a certain project, that's fine with me...it's another thing to be ignored and have your hard work wasted because they couldn't be bothered to even play the audition. I guess I expected VOICE 123 to hold their clients accountable for playing/opening all of the auditions that THEY requested...but dream on..they don't.

Thank you for sharing your experience-it’s a sentiment I hear quite often from voice-over professionals. The frustration of having auditions go unopened is completely understandable, especially when you’ve invested hours perfecting your submissions. It can feel like a waste of time and effort, particularly with projects requiring both voice-over and music production. Your point about platforms holding clients accountable for reviewing all submissions is a great one, though, as you’ve said, it’s an area where some platforms fall short. Unfortunately, many casting sites prioritise speed for clients, which often means they close a project as soon as they find what they want, regardless of how many auditions are left unheard. For multi-layered auditions like jingles, where additional production work is required, it might be worth focusing on clients or opportunities that offer clearer guarantees or payment for the pitch. It can also help to balance time-consuming auditions with ones that are quicker and less risky. I appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective-it highlights the challenges many voice-over artists face. Hopefully, platforms will one day address these issues and create a fairer system for talents. We can but hope!

I have trouble pronouncing my R’s, and it’s difficult for people to understand what I’m saying sometimes because of this. One time, I was playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with a friend, and he asked me how to turn off the Auto Accelerate option, and I was like “you gotta press the R Button” and he thought I said the “Ahh Button,” and it was annoying. I had to take his damn controller and turn it off myself because otherwise we’d sit there for an hour while I try to explain to him what I was trying to say
@GaryTerzza
@GaryTerzza 9 күн бұрын
Interestingly here in the UK we would say the R button as “ahh button” just as you have, because British English is less rhotic compared to American English.

Gary ~ I tried this and it worked a treat, but when I uploaded my RMS-normalized files, they were ALL rejected for having peaks over -3 dB. I asked an engineer friend to look at my files and she said sure enough, lots of my “peaks” were over -3, and she said a lot of them were something she called “clipped.” Audacity overwrote all my original files, so I can’t go back and fix them, so now I have to record the whole book over again. I followed all your instructions, and can’t figure out what I did wrong. Please help, me, Gary! ! ! !
@GaryTerzza
@GaryTerzza 12 күн бұрын
Hi Paul, when normalising RMS, the tool adjusts the overall level of your audio to meet the RMS target but doesn’t necessarily check or limit the peaks. If your original audio had high peaks relative to the rest of the audio, the normalisation process could push those peaks above -3 dB. Clipping happens when audio exceeds the maximum amplitude that your recording software can, resulting in distortion. Since Audacity overwrote your original files, re-recording might not be necessary. If the files are clipped but still somewhat recoverable: 1. Use Audacity’s Clip Fix tool: Select the clipped sections and go to Effect > Clip Fix. This may repair mild clipping. 2. Manually adjust the peaks: Use a limiter or manually reduce peak levels before re-uploading. Good luck!

Thanks, Gary! This was so helpful. Have you documented anywhere (maybe your newsletter) the optimal settings for audiobooks when using Audacity?
@GaryTerzza
@GaryTerzza Ай бұрын
You’re welcome. ACX’s requirements for audiobooks are: 1. RMS Levels: Between -23 dB and -18 dB. 2. Peak Levels: No higher than -3 dB. 3. Noise Floor: No higher than -60 dB. 4. File Format: 192 kbps or higher MP3, constant bit rate, mono. Installing the ACX checker for Audacity is a good idea and to sort out RMS issues check out kzbin.info/www/bejne/mniZpJ2Lf9-eeK8si=ruy1mH9LeBNUvVyW

Do you need to insert a separate file of room tone? I have seen some tutorials that suggest after you adjust Noise Gate to add a separate room tone track that runs the length of the original audio.
@GaryTerzza
@GaryTerzza Ай бұрын
If you are producing an audiobook for ACX they require a few seconds of room tone at the beginning and end of your recording. Using a noise gate might make your noise floor too low - check out my video on using one in Audacity kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2eboIZslJ2nl68si=qlkdrCNC3sGIDyyE

If you're wearing headphones you may notice you can still hear the breath faintly in the background. I should probably have reduced the breath further by increasing the Gate Threshold. It's all about experimenting and seeing what seems the most natural for you.

One way to figure out if you've gated out too much is to use Audacity's 'ACX Check' under the 'Analyze' menu. ACX is the Amazon subsidiary for recording audio books for Audible. If you are using too much Gate, it will let you know.

Great tip this! I'm on the fence about auditions now with V123 because many people have said it's better to get experience first as your rating supposedly goes down unless people give your audition a thumbs up or you get hired. Was wondering what your take on this is? Thanks
@GaryTerzza
@GaryTerzza Ай бұрын
It’s true that Voice123’s ranking system can be influenced by how well your auditions perform, which can be tough if you’re just starting out. However, I wouldn’t let that discourage you from auditioning. The key is to focus on submitting compelling auditions that showcase your strengths, even if you’re new to the platform. Every audition is a chance to learn, improve, and potentially book a gig. Just keep working on your skills, and over time, you’ll build momentum. If you’re concerned about your ranking, make sure to only audition for roles that truly suit your voice and style. Working with a VO coach will help you hone your performance and keep you on the right track.
