These are all very good points some people definitely need to hear. I find that once I start talking about calcium or multivitamin supplements, it's easier to guide someone to a more suitable pet, like a rat. Many people have this idea that reptiles somehow don't need anything more than a heat rock and crickets they find outside. My favorite was when a customer informed me she "didn't want an animal she would ever have to take to a vet"... I told her I could sell her a pet rock, and ended up taking home her special ordered leo.
@leopardgeckotalk5 жыл бұрын

My Leo is a rescue who I’ve only had for a few weeks. We got it from someone who had a kid and didn’t want it anymore. When we got the cage all she had was a single hide and very dirty napkins for bedding. She was also severely underweight and aggressive. I took her with zero knowledge but by watching tons of videos I’ve upgraded her ten gallon to a 40 and I can hold her now. She hasn’t gained all her weight but she is getting bigger. Still freaked out by me sometimes but at least I’ve gotten ducky to come out more

The thing about playing is that many biologists theorize that enrichment usually comes in the forms that would benefit the animal who is being enriched. Geckos don't benefit much from toys because they're not entirely prey, nor are they entirely predator... it's kind of a hybrid because they're kind of in the middle of the food chain. So, giving them things to hide under or inside gives them more enrichment than say, something that they could beat up like a cat might enjoy. Most of the time, my gecko barely even chews her food. She get so excited, she barely chews and just swallows it almost whole, which freaks me out sometimes. Although if I were to talk about any reptiles that seem to be more playful, Snake Discovery has a lot of videos about their rescued alligator, Rex. Rex seems to enjoy having a lot of toys that she can explore by biting it, dragging it around, pulling it under the surface of the water, etc. Things that alligators regularly do. However, it's often said that Rex doesn't seem to play as often when there's someone in the room, an alligator is definitely not a pet that you want to get, and you certainly wouldn't want to be the one to "play" with this reptile.

I absolutely love this video. Why? You touched on the only actual aspects of Leo keeping that could vary person to person! I grew up with many reptiles and bred Leo’s for a couple years until I retired my Murphy’s Patternless male. I had him from the smallest of juvie’s until the end of his life. He was the last thing that I was given from my Dad, who passed away a year or so after gifting him to me. My dad loved all of my reptiles, but none more than Aang the patternless. ❤️ I was just shy of 12 years old I when my father passed and throughout my childhood, there was an odd but wonderful occurrence. Whenever I’d be in my room and especially while holding him, I’d find myself gazing in to his eyes and feeling a sense of my dad’s love and energy. Anyone who’s owned a Leopard gecko knows about their incredible “smile and eye squints” and my Aang was the slow, gentle, curious, and goofy scale-bag full of love. 🤘🏼❤️✨ Sheesh.... I’ll get off my soap box, guys. 😅

But then..she passed away because she didn't eat, we've tried EVERYTHING to get her to eat but, nothing worked. Then, we got ANOTHER Leopard gecko. Her name was Avia, and I still have her today! I was so relieved she lived longer than Blizzard. But then, something happened, Avia layed eggs. But they didn't make it 😢. Then Avia layed more eggs, they also, didn't make it 😢😢. A few months after that, Ralph had, a bit of a butt problem Oof. We didn't know what it was at first buuuuutttt. The problem he had was called Prolapsed Hemipenes. It didn't look good. After a few days, he got better by putting stuff on...it...so yes! *I hope Avia lays eggs that hatch lol.*

If they’re housed together please separate them ASAP! You should not be breeding your geckos for multiple reasons. Your female could get eggbound, which requires expensive surgery and could kill her. If you don’t know both of your gecko’s exact genetics they absolutely shouldn’t be bred, the babies could come out deformed.

I hate the bearded dragon trying to bite me but maybe that’s because some people are underfeeding Rex
@Layniacsofficial3 жыл бұрын
@@Ryanbros there is only so many reasons why a bearded dragon would bite you. 1. You proceeded to pet it from the top down or try to pick it up from top down. You always have to go from underneath it's belly and hold the tail. They have a third eye so when you have your hand above their head, they think you are a predator. 2. They are skirmish because they're shy Being underfed is never a case as to why they'll become hostile. Even an abused dragon can be handled if you respect it's space.

I’m currently debating between a hognose snake and a leopard gecko. Thank you we much for making a video dedicated some of the downsides of owning these, it’s a huge help to anyone deciding. It honestly is making me lean towards the gecko because of how chill he was just laying on your arm😂 Bonus round: What are your opinions on fat tailed geckos? I really like those but they don’t seem widely available. Any opinions on them are appreciated, just checking on what people think of them

Hi do i am 13 years old and i recently got into leopard geckos and this was really helpfull cuz i did my research but i like to hear something from owners of leopard geckos. I love that they aren't really a pet to play with and they mostly sleep and are only really active during dusk or dawn. This video popped up in my recomended and i live it! You just got a new sub!

Today I learnt I have more in common with geckos than I thought. I’m asleep during the day as my sleeping pattern sucks, I sleep a lot too. But they’re cuter than me so there’s that.

3:29 I'm the exact opposite,I can deal with feeding a snake a frozen thawed mouse/rat but I don't think I'd be able to feed insects (I just don't like them). Actually,you could try a garter snake cause they eat fish and insects.

"shouldn't" is a terrible word, more people should maybe rephrase to "responsibilities of owning a gecko"
@starbyray78285 жыл бұрын
Hi Rebecca, I think you make very valid points that maybe a lot of novices will not be aware of particularly the amount of time Geckos will sleep. As of course most channel show Geckos up and about eating, hand walking etc (no channel of videos showing snoozing reptiles would be popular lol). Also I am glad you did include the DO NOT COHABIT point last as that is very important and people tend to remember the last thing you tell them more often than not. Its human nature. I often joke that my Leos could outlive me BUT it's actually true as if they live to 25 I will be 75 (God willing) so for a more mature Herper that is a point to consider too.

I am thinking very hard about getting a leopard gecko and have been doing a lot of research and one of the things that me and my fiance had to really talk about and think about is the live insects. My fiance has owned reptiles in the past and has experience with keeping live food so it wasnt as weird to him as it was to me and we came to the conclusion that we would be able to manage the live insects and maintain their health so they are healthy for my gecko buy gut loading and do it comfortably but that was something we really had to consider and I felt your videos were extremely useful because when I first thought about getting a gecko I was just going to get dried insects like I did when I got mealworms for my hedgehogs in the past but your videos along with others videos informed me that I was wrong and a gecko would require live food so I'm so thankful for ppl like u who take time to properly educate people so that geckos and other small creatures can be properly cared for. I use to do that in regards to hamster care and I feel very passionate about proper education and research on any animal that one might be considering owning because its up to the owner to give the best possible life to their little friend and lack of education shouldnt be what Henders them from doing so.

In answer to the electrical bit. When renting a house we had 5 tanks going. Two bearded dragons and 3 leos and didnt really see a difference in how much was being used to when it was off. It was what we were expecting to use

ah interesting, i am hoping to get one of those meter when I have my own house, which tell you exactly how much its costing. However I know I've seen some people say their parents won't let them have a gecko as they don't like keep the electric on lol

These videos are really important. Leopard geckos take daily care and mean caring for the addition of live foods every day... For a loooong time! And I have learnt that describing them as "on-off" is incredibly apt. But it makes your time with them even nicer. Also, price really isnt high for a single gecko with light ceramic lamp anf a heat mat.i was surprised because i was expecting it to be quite high.

speaking of heat i recently picked up abunch of heating panels they are exactly the size if the longest part of a 20 gallon tank. originally they are called under desk heaters 100 watt heat element panels. they provide amazing heat but do not burn. they look like acoustic ceiling tile s on one side and fiberglass on the other. they can be painted and hung on the wall ! if you have many they can be put on the ceileling. they use little to no electricty and my lepord gecko loves it. sometimes he will just lay half on the glass and half in the tank and enjoy the warmth..

How are you confident that your gecko won't run away or something? I want to let mine explore on my bed but my room is not pet safe as there are several spots he can get to where I can't get him out. My bed is also about 3 feet ish tall and it is a far drop. It is also a day bed with slats where he can crawl down under the bed. I'm scared he will get down there and it will be hard to get to him. He loves exploring but I'm so scared to let hi

leopard geckos fit my life style so well so i'm extremely exited to get one in December-January as i love them so much. since i'm 14 and at school almost everyday i won't be in from 7:45-4:50. i also have a weird sleep pattern so i am normally awake from 4-5am to 9-10pm with short naps after i get home. as i am continuing my education and both the collage and university i want to attend are easy to get to from where i live i don't need to worry about that ( we are planning to move closer to the train station so it would be even easier ) i am also planning to stay with my parents till i have enough money to move out with everything i need, so again i don't need to worry about that. i also get emotionally attached to people and animals too easily so a pet that lives a long and happy life is the best for me. i'm not the most playful person but i am known to have a extremely warm natural safe body temperature, i also love hugs and being snuggled up to so when the gecko gets used to me and warms up to me enough that it lets me hold them comfortably i will be really happy and exited.

our tortoise is a reptile (duh! hehe) and he is playful as anything. he is a right adrenaline junkie, he climbs as high as possible, then launches himself off the edge. of course, we keep an eye on how high anything is that he can climb because he is still tiny, but he loves it and gets really depressed if he can't have his skydiving time. we actually found he was unwell and in need of antibiotics early on because he stopped skydiving before any other symptoms showed - he was still eating and drinking normally, his nose/mouth/eyes were clear and alert. it was only a few days later that the other symptoms started developing, by which point we had already taken him to the reptile specialist vet and were about to begin a treatment of antibiotics because of how some of his tests had come back

I'm okay with all of those reasons. My parents might not be with the insects and the electric bill but I find myself okay with these. And every time I hear that they live for 20-30 years I always say "I'm okay as long as you don't out live me like a turtle" it's the only reason why I won't get a turtle

If the insects are the worst bit for you, i KIND OF recommend cresties. They might eat insects when offered them, but it's not their main diet. That is why i said kind of, but there are probably ways around it

Insects are a big deal breaker for me. I can deal with worms no problem but crickets and locusts not a chance. I'm slowly trying to overcome my irrational fear because I really love amphibians but it's the reason I will probably never own a gecko species. my biology teacher actually has two in one tank! they're fine, they actually cuddle a lot :) if you do want two, i'd suggest two girls. boys can get territorial, and if you don't want babies, a girl and a boy is a no. two girls work out perfectly tho!
