After owning an RV for over 10 years my secret is to keep up with all the maintenance that's required and check the different systems frequently. I use a wonderful vehicle maintenance program called Automotive Wolf car maintenance software that I use on my laptop and configured it to not only monitor my RV's maintenance schedule but also all the other little things that are needed to keep an RV in good shape like inspecting the roof for leaks every 6 months. The software also keeps track of all my expenses and trips so I know all the RV parks I've stayed at and whether it's worth returning there. If you really want to save money keep up with the maintenance!

Keep a torque wrench in your rig and check all lug nuts every time before moving out. With tandem axles (and single) you get side load when cornering, over time this can change the tightness of the lugs. This is a very important procedure many neglect then wonder why they have related failure.

Excellent tips David and Jenni. As a former Chevrolet automotive mechanic I truly appreciate your explanation about why consumer warranty service is so bad, and you are 100% correct David!. I was an honest mechanic, so didn't "make the company money" like other mechanics performing brake jobs and tune-up that aren't necessary. This meant I got most of the warranty work, which I performed with the excellence and integrity people expected. I had worked on a water leak under warranty for an elderly couple preparing to travel for the holidays the next day. The warranty repair time was 43 minutes, but I spent four and a half hours (working until mid-night) to the leak. Performing method for water leak testing I was unable to locate the problem. I decided to remove the interior seats, carpet (including trim molding). Using an unapproved method of testing I sprayed water along the under carriage of the vehicle and found the leak. It was along the floor pan seam behind the passenger seat. The approved method for testing water leaks would not have aided in finding a leak such as this one. The couple picked up their repaired vehicle the next morning, and were very grateful for my "beyond the call of duty" efforts is how the wife worded it. She said she cooked all the time asking me if there was anything she could cook for me . I told her peanut butter cookies were my favorite. Though I learned a lot and had great tools to work with at the dealership I only worked there for three years because I couldn't make enough money. I refused to "sell out" as many mechanics do. When the couple returned from their holiday travels the wife stopped by to thank me again replete with a plate of my favorite cookies. The point of my story is that there are good, honest, reputable automotive mechanics out there. The trick is finding one and keeping them for life, or call David!.

Thanks for just being you Brian. I'm proud that my parents raised me to be honest and eager to do a little more to make it right for a customer or individual regardless of the $$$. I chuckled to myself about you asking for peanut butter cookies because I've done the same! I'm known as 'that guy' who always goes above and beyond by my neighbors and at work. Fortunately my line of work isn't about 'getting money from the customer.' I learned how to be handy for myself after getting the run around by companies and their services. One that sticks in my head from way back was a Sears warranty issue..... twice! It was such a scam they didn't even try to hide it. Then Sears went to a credit card that charged a huge amount of interest. I stopped shopping there. Sad to see where they are now.

Great tips!! I added a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) to my fifth wheel for some added peace of mind while going down the road. The monitor is mounted in the cab of my truck and receives tire pressure and temperature via bluetooth and is shown on the display. I did replace my tires this year, but it's nice to know before it happens when a tire is about to fail so it doesn't damage your trailer. If your trailer is anything like mine, I can't really see my trailer tires when I'm going down the road. The cost was about $250 but well worth it in my opinion. Thanks again for the tips! Safe travels!!

I'm glad you both took on the challenges of rv'ing gracefully. It's definitely a life changing choice. I work at an rv dealership and there's a lot of customers of ours that rather yell, degrade, and place blame on us for their lack of knowledge. But there's also a lot of customers of ours who faithfully return to us because we truly go above and beyond for our customers. We're primarily a Jayco dealership but also have some Forest River trailers and motor homes. I'm the warranty administrator & service writer in the service department. We unfortunately recently had to result to not doing warranty work on trailers that weren't bought from us because of what you mentioned of dealers not getting fully reimbursed for the work invested. We figured if we already get a full booked schedule 2 months out with our customers work we might as well book it with customers whom chose to invest in a trailer with us, so we're willing to take any loss with the warranty that doesn't get fully paid... it's a curteousy thing to keep our customers happy. We earn a ton of customers this way from recommendations. I've dealt with tons of manufacturers warranties and extended service policies... they all can be a pain at times. Overall, Jayco pays us the most (2 years bumper to bumper as long as it's not maintenance & customer damage)and Forest River (1 year) isn't too bad as long as I provide a lot of pictures. Keystone was absolutely the worst, I probably at the most received $100 ever from warranty coverage. The nice thing about Jayco is they'll allow you to go to a non Jayco dealer repair shop as long as you call them to report it & provide pics/receipts for a claim to be done via the selling dealer. Scheduling can be frustrating I understand but we get situations of all types that can take longer than other jobs, especially when parts are unavailable from the suppliers (that's a curve ball that gets thrown at us constantly). More than anything, these are houses being dropped off on limited parking space on our lot & some people drop off for a handful of issues & some people drop off with 15+ issues, some people pick up immediately & some people won't pick up for multiple weeks, some suppliers will get us parts in 2 days & some suppliers mail out broken parts, etc. We do our best at the end of the day to finish repairs because we want them picked up so we can bring in more work. Great video, I'd love to share it to some of our customers. Happy camping, take care!

Something simple but definitely worth it especially if you are a weekend warrior, camping when you can, is make a list of things you need/forgot so you can better your next trip. If you boondock, I'd suggest a solar system to recharge your batteries. I have a 100w system and two 100aH batteries. This makes it so we have heat all night every night.

@@jimscheltema670 Hey Jim, so I dont camp with hookups typically so I am reliant on propane and my batteries. The solar system charges the batteries during the day (so make sure you park your rig where you can get ample sun) and then I use the batteries for lights and part of the heating. My Fridge uses propane and so does my heating, but the thermostat and fan use the batteries. Heat wont kick on without the thermostat so it is necessary to keep them full.

By changing out your 5 gallon propane tanks to 7 gallon tanks you gain a little price break at a lot of places by going over 5 gallons. Also less trips to get refueled. Not only are bears not afraid of dogs (much less their dookie), these folks will be in for a rude awakening if they think a truck cap will keep bears out. Bears will work their claws inside the gap of a car's frame and rip the door open if they smell food. I've seen the interior of a panel van shredded just to get to leftover pizza that a teen thought would be OK because it was "just a slice". The bear pried open the rear door, then made its way up & under & over the seats to get to the middle row with that slice laying on the floorboards. Either store your food in a bear proof container, put it in a sack and hang it high, or you'll learn the hard way.

I heard this from somebody else. When at a campground and you have your black tank open for convenience as it's right next to your trailer do make sure that you close it off and dump it only when you're about to leave. That way you have water in there when you have to do your number two business. The this person was making was to make sure you always have a gallon of to water in the black tank regardless if your black water hose is conveniently in the ground at the campsite. It'll make your life a lot easier because your " stuff" isn't sticking to the black tank inside. Also I know they always tell you to flush the black tank first and that for the most part is correct. But as a safety measure open the gray water tank first for about 5 seconds to make sure the connection is secure. Then close it off in flushing black water tank first followed by the grey water. Because if you go to dump your black water first and you don't have a secure connection you sure would have wished that it was a grey water splashed on you.

A good dealer is worth their weight in black tank pellets :-) Our Dometic fridge went out in our Adventurer truck camper and the dealer near our home diagnosed a clogged evaporator coil. He called Dometic and convinced them that it would be cheaper for them to simply ship him a new unit rather than pay the additional hourly rate to disassemble and replace the evaporator so we got a new fridge. We did have to leave it for a week to allow for shipping the new unit but we got a new fridge for $0. Then of course, being a typical RV, the fridge went out again 9 months later with the same problem. Took it to the same dealer but the service manager who helped me the first time was away on vacation but we still got the evaporator replaced for free so we were able to sell the truck camper with everything working :-) We have also replaced all the tires on two of our previous travel trailers before setting out on their first trip. Khumo makes an LT tire made specifically for trailers. It's an 8 ply rated for 60 psi. We traveled over 8000 miles with that rig passing through Utah in July with 118 degrees temps while we were there. The tires never got hot at any point along this trip. I could always lay my hand on them without discomfort

Propane tanks have an expiration date stamped on them, after which they can’t be refilled. Two choices......buy new ones at Uhaul (ours also refills tanks), their new tanks have gauges built into them....huge benefit! Then always refill them. Or.....take the expired tanks in and exchange them, but check the replacement tanks to select the ones with the most time left on expiration and then refill them.

Ok, others lightly touched the point about propane. A 20# tank holds 20 net pounds when filled to capacity. Switching tanks at a store they are only filled to 15 net pounds. It is in large print on the front of the tank. That's only 3/4 full. But they know most people wont figure it out. You are paying for a tank that is only filled 3/4 full. There was a class action lawsuit regarding this issue. And they settled on marking the tanks clearly with the amount of propane in them. When they are fill to 20 net pounds they still have an extra tank capacity designed in for the gas expansion due to temperature changes..

If you exchange, you are giving the propane company 5 pounds of propane and paying for the complete exchange. You will likely pay more for the exchange, even if your tank is completely empty. An empty 20 lb tank will hold about 4.7 gallons of propane.
@nthkeoaeosntuhaeosnu5 жыл бұрын
Reply to Michael Rigdon. The clearly labeled 15 lbs. is the net weight. That means the weight of the propane gas only. Those cylinders that you exchanged for at Blue Rhino are called 20lb tanks commonly because that's what they are designed to be filled to 20 lbs. net weight when they are full. All the exchange tanks are 20 pounders. I just searched around the internet and the major gas suppliers aren't giving any information on identifying smaller tank sizes. I'm sure they don't want that info to get out. But they tell you how to identify the capacity's of all the larger size tanks. Hmmmm But if you would go to reputable propane gas company they would confirm that information to you. My local gas company admitted to me they charge a lot to fill tanks because they don't want to fill the small tanks. Its not worth their time. So I agree with the other commenter that generally Tractor Supply has the best price per gallon and I checked everywhere that sells propane in the whole area around me in a 75 mile radius.

Most of the dealerships we contacted said they would not work on it unless we had bought it from them. They said they were way too busy working on trailers that they had sold and had no time to work on anyone else’s trailers. On 'back flushing' you might want to mention that many will basically empty the black first, then empty the grey second (instead of both at the same time) this way the grey can help flush out. Also, I had to look up 'back flushing' because I am not familiar with the term so if you ever make a new video maybe explain what that is. Finally, even if I am hooked up to full service for a long time I still close my tanks and have them fill over time before flushing them out. Reason I do this even though I am still hooked up is two reasons 1. to flush out so that over months 'junk' doesnt start to collect and 2. just in case bugs find a way up. In in the winter I leave both open though for freezing concerns. I know you guys dont use black water tanks so I thought I would share this bit
@SEANMCAD5 жыл бұрын
oh and regarding freezing. my water line is heated so I can run some hot water using the hot water heater, then go outside and make sure the sewage hose has cleared out of water (and ice melted). I do that about every day when its freezing outside. I have found hot water works better then trying to put an electric heater outside near the hose when the water freezes in the sewage line.

I know that you do not use your black tank, but Yes! You should have a clear elbow, AND a hose hook up on your external flush gate to blast water back up into the tanks. This helps keep everything cleaned out. Also I think y'all have mentioned this before, but Goodyear Endurance tires have stronger sidewalls. Along with a good Tire Pressure (and temperature) Monitoring System (TPMS). This really helps keep the tires from blowing out.

FYI, for anyone reading this. A proper and well made trailer tire like a Goodyear Endurance or a Sailun S637 would be a much better fit than a light truck tire. There are several differences between light truck tires and trailer tires that should be looked into before considering either one as the right choice. Great video Fate Unbound, keep them coming!
@kevinj82585 жыл бұрын
Living Our Dream - I am concerned about this with our 5000 pound RV trailer. Bought tires from a Goodyear shop but am sure they are not Goodyear.
@LivingOurDream5 жыл бұрын
@@kevinj8258 Goodyear is not only a tire manufacturer, but their retail outlets are re-sellers as well. If they are Goodyear tires, they will have Gooodyear on the sidewall, just like a Firestone or Michelin would. The problem with running light truck tires on a trailer is that there are forces placed on the tire that it was not designed for every time the trailer is turned going forward or backward. A properly rated and sized trailer tire will get the job done nicely. A trailer that is too large, too small, too low of rating or too high of rating will not perform optimally. Putting light truck tires on a trailer is like wearing your pants backwards like the kids used to do in the early 90's when those kids "Kris Kross" we setting a trend. The pants will go on, they will fit and they will stay up, but they certainly were not designed to work like that and will fail eventually. Fate Unbound is right about China tires though. Most of them, not all of them though, are not made to the same standards that we have on this side of the pond. Even tires made in USA can be faulty, take the Goodyear Marathon for example. This tire was a poor design, but made by a reputable company, that is why Goodyear stopping manufacturing the tire and designed the Goodyear Endurance tire. These are great tires and should be considered. On the flip side of the coin, Sailun S637 tires are made in China, but some of their tire manufacturing standards adhere to guidelines set forth in the USA. This is why the Sailun S637 is a great tire, but often overkill for a smaller and lighter trailer which makes for a bad choice, even if the tire is a good one. Kevin, take a look at your tires you bought from Goodyear, see what they say on the side and go from there. There should be a name of some sort of the manufacturer, even then most tires will have a model or series like Endurance, Marathon or S637 on them. If they are not true Goodyear tires, I would see what their policy is on replacements/exchanges. Of course, if you are only traveling 10 miles or so to get to your camping destination, you would probably be OK for years to come with cheaper tires. If you are traveling great distances, then I would highly suggest removing the China tires. Hope this helps.

reply to @@LivingOurDream here is a quote from tirerack dot com "Also consider that Special Trailer (ST), as well as Light Truck (LT) tires are fully rated for trailer applications. This means ST- and LT-sized tires can carry the full weight rating branded on the sidewalls when used on a trailer." Most of the article there noted differences in passenger car tires. Light truck tires need very stiff sidewalls like travel trailers. I'd like to see some one cut some old tires up and compare travel trailer and light truck tires. I'll suggest that to Project Farm channel.
@LivingOurDream5 жыл бұрын
@@nthkeoaeosntuhaeosnu I have seen that article before and just for anyone else wanting to read it, here is a link to it. www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=219 That said, you will never find a LT rated tire on my trailer due to the inherent sidewall flexibility that comes with a LT tire vs. a ST tire. Some LT tires have more rigid sidewalls than other LT tires, but not all. Taken from the same article on tirerack.com you referenced is this quote "Typical passenger radial tires with flexible sidewalls can accentuate trailer sway problems. The stiffer sidewalls and higher operating pressures common with Special Trailer (ST) designated tires help reduce trailer sway." Some more information on the differences between LT and ST tires can be seen here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGe2qKqIo9KjZ7M There is another problem to consider when changing from ST to LT tires. The sizes between the two and the load ratings between the two are not the same. This leaves it up to the customer to figure out which is the best LT tire for their use. Width, height and load rating are critical points when selecting a tire that is safe and economical for you to mount to your travel trailer. We have all seen the videos of swaying trailers pulling the tow vehicle around on the road. This is a serious and life threatening event that can be very violent. Do as you wish and I sincerely hope that your travels are safe, but using a properly rated, well maintained and accurately inflated tire for a specifically designed purpose is always the best bet.
@jam51585 жыл бұрын
Go to any reputable tire shop and ask to put LT tires on your trailer and they will probably politely tell you no it is not a good idea. I also wonder if improper use of LT tires on a trailer would also void the warranty as that is not the proper application they were made for.

We had two blowouts as well on one side but one on the way to Walt Disney World and one on the way back. The latter one was worse because we had no spare left and AAA had to find a tire at a warehouse close by and bring it. It took six hours of waiting by the side of the road on a Saturday night. Needless to say we bought really good tires and will be exchanging them every 2-3 years regardless of tread and use.

Hard lesson I learned this past year was to make sure your trailer cable is secure and no chance of dragging. Mine were dragged probably by the time I left the house and did not know until an hour after sunset in the middle of nowhere. I crippled into town 35 miles and got a motel and repaired it the next day.

Heavier 10- ply higher pressure tires are smart insurance. Your grandparents may have overloaded or underinflated. Here's a trailer tire failure: Moving a trailer in the winter with it's tires frozen and partially sunk into the ground. It can literally tear apart the lamination from steel belt to the rubber. Especially on China Bomb tires! So, I park on 2"x12" boards when in storage.

Thank you, and when you fill your propane tank you get a full 20pounds, and only 15pounds when you exchange them
@jonburke20385 жыл бұрын
I’ve found that the exchange propane tanks here in MI are typically filled to 16 lbs. When you have them filled, they will fill to 20 lbs. So, with an exchange, you are paying more for less propane. Sometimes exchanging is your only convenient option, so in that case, just have to live with the higher price of exchange.

one thing I learned the hard way when I started with RVs, was to ALWAYS check you air conditioner before running it for the 1st time each season. Check the fan motor to be sure it spins freely and has no play side to side in the shaft. check the compressors capacitor to be sure it's not buldging or leaking.. Also this is a good time to clean all the coils and filters.

Very good advice on the RV China bombs! I always suggest if you don't have the funds to replace the trailer tires immediately, run them at a higher pressure. I usually run them at 65psi.
@scanadaze5 жыл бұрын
2 things I have learned. 1 the trailer tires heat up a lot especially in worm climate areas. A couple was having the problem of blowing tires a lot. They said drop a few pounds in the tires in worm to hot climate areas and the problems will come to a stop or mostly gone. 2 one thing I learned about when you buy a propane tank as a replacement, they do not fill them all the way. You really get your money worth and more propane when you get it refilled. But watch the stamp date on the tanks. Some places will not refill them if the date is to old. Although it's a new tank. They only go off the stamp date on the tank. Also, my own opinion on propane tanks. If your out a lot or for long times. Buy new tanks but there is a step up size. With two as those sizes, it's really like your using 3 instead of 2 the small size. Just my own experience. Thanks for your video and knowledge.

The tire part is 100% true! My wife and I had a 30ft 5th wheel coachman, in 2015 we left GA on our way to Zion national park in Utah with the ours kids. On the trip heading to Zion we had 5 blowouts! All 4 tires on the camper and the SPARE! I ended up buying 6 new tires!! I replaced the 4 on the camper, the spare and I found a place along the way that had an extra rim for a good price and put a tire on it for and extra spare! It was a nightmare, changing a tire at night and on busy highways!!! Plus my tires blew 1 at a time maybe a few 100 miles apart! In 2018 we bought a 40 foot 5th wheel Avalanche by keystone and the 1st thing I told the dealer was "take those trailer tires off and put me some 10ply light duty truck tires on"! I'm a licensed electrician and part gear head, I love working on stuff but even I didn't know about this and my wife and I had own a camper for 8 yrs before this nightmare happened! I researched the problem online and couldn't find any answers, finally at a campground in Florida I meet a guy and he told this little secret! I will not run anything else under my camper!!

As I understand it, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that trailer tires are designed to quickly resume their shape after being parked for extended amounts of time, compared to truck tires that can develop low spots (sag) from extended parking.
@LivingOurDream5 жыл бұрын
This is correct and a proper trailer tire like the Goodyear Endurance or a Sailun S637 would do a much better job on the trailer than any light truck tire.
@dallanc51995 жыл бұрын
LT Truck tires have thinner sidewalls than ST Tires of the same size. You are losing vertical strength. Its also very hard on LT tires when you back up sharply and dual axle forces one tire to "drag" sideways. LTs on a trailer IMO, cause more problems than they solve.
@skipwatson19515 жыл бұрын
I agree. Just upgrade your trailer tires. My TT came with load range C rated tires. I wanted to upgrade to E rated, but couldn't find them to fit 14" rims, so had to settle for an upgrade to D rating. Still better than what came from the factory.

LT tires are much better than almost any ST tire. With the exception of the newly released ST tires that have the higher speed ratings.

Note on the propane: you also get more in the tank when refilling. They are only filled to 3/4 when exchanging!! 15 lbs instead of 20lb capacity
@bruceh37865 жыл бұрын
One other truth able propane tank exchanges is in many cases, the replacement tank is not fully filled so you are getting short changed compared to having the tank refilled. That means the cost difference is even greater than you thought. Take a look at the small print the on the exchange rack and you may see a disclaimer on the amount of propane in the exchange tank. A good place to get the tanks refilled at a reasonable price is Tractor Supply. Many independent hardware stores do refills, especially in smaller towns, the price may vary. I have a 26 ft mid size trailer similar to yours (no slide) and the same truck (Extended cab 2004.5 LLY) but with 4X4. Your tanks look like 20 LB each. I replaced mine years ago with 40 LB tanks and that has worked out great. It make life easier for extensive boondocking like you do and it gives more options for getting a better price. The only concern if you are pushing the gross weight limit of your trailer. Handling should not be an issue since it is up front weight and you trailer is likely not a challenge for that truck. ST trailer tires were questionable several years ago but the technology has improved considerably in recent years and so going to an LT tire on a mid size trailer with 15 inch wheels is not needed. Not only that, there is not much out there in a 15 inch LT that will fit. The two new ST tires to get are the Carlise Radial Trail HD or the even newer Goodyear Endurance. Both have a speed rating of over 80 MPH compared to 65 MPH of the older ST tires. The manufacturers will deliver the trailer with the lightest tire they can get away with and they do not hold up over much travel. Go for an E rated tire on the 15 wheels if it will fit. That will have a higher weight rating and handle the heat generated going down the road much better. Heat is the worst thing for tire life. Tire wear is usually not the best indicator for when to get new tires. Instead look at the date code on the tire. If it is a quality ST tire, consider replacing it after five years in hot climate and six in cool area. If it is a no name China tire, replace it no more than three years if lightly used or right away if you want to be safe. If you put on a lot of miles, get rid of the China tire right away. The flexing going down the road generates a lot of heat and those tires are at a high risk of failure. It only takes one blow out to learn that tires are not a place to save money.

Propane exchange tanks are typically filled to 15 lbs - 5 lbs less than available capacity. I've been told they do that for shipping safety as they can't control where those tanks go or how they get there. I think it's more financial than that...

Thumbs up. China bombs indeed. Boy o boy have we been true that. We finally switched to GoodYear 14 ply steel tires Amarican made. Also you’ll eventually experience loss of propane flow after a refill. Open the tank vent for 45 seconds then try again. If still no propane flow then a two minute vent off. Always cut in your propane by opening the valve super slow. A slug of liquid thru the regulator will damage it. Strong propane smell from the regulator is a sign that happened.

Having been in the propane business, we always told customers with bad OPD valves to go exchange the tank away...LOL If it needs re-certified again go exchange the tank. Also the key thing with exchanges is they don't fill their tanks all the way. A full tank will piss liquid propane out of the bleeder hole, although this is old school before OPD valves (Overfill Protection Device) which is a float that will close so you can not overfill a tank. We always typically let the OPD valve just shut, there you go a FULL tank. Actually we filled normal peoples tanks either by the piss method and/or OPD valve whatever occurred first our own tanks or really good customers we just let the OPS valve shut and you are done filling...LOL

Tires need proper inflation and checked often. Get the trailer as level as you can when pulling, with the weight distributed as even as possible. Buddy lost both rear tires within a week. When he finally got it to my house where it was sitting on concrete, he had it too high in the front and more stuff stored in the rear of the trailer. All that along with not having the proper psi is what we think caused his problem. Also they say you should replace tires every 7 years even if there is 80% tread left because of the sidewalls dry rotting. Cut the plastic off of your propane bottles, depending on where you are, the plastic will hold moisture and cause them to start rusting. a propane bottle cover would help keep your hoses out of the direct sun also. New sub. Love the Rottie. Safe travels

Good Tip on "filling" your propane tanks VS. exchange... I exchanged tanks 2 times with the "AMERIGAS" tanks and found both times these tanks were NOT FULL. I then exchanged one more time but before using, took it in to have it "topped off" !! That tank took almost an additional half gallon of propane. SO, when you think your exchanging for a full tank of propane, good luck, your most likely not getting it... Think how many gallons of propane Amerigas is saving... When you pay $20, and getting a half gallon less, your paying close to $4.40 a gallon for your propane...

Another thing to be aware of with propane bottles is they have a date on them. This is because they are federally required to be hydro tested for safety periodically. I'm not going to get in depth here about this, but this is good to know stuff that can save you a headache down the road trying to get say a 40lb bottle filled that is out of hydro.

Someone has probably said this already, but an additional cost of exchanging propane tanks is the exchange tanks are not completely filled for “safety” reasons, or possibly simply for additional profits.

You only exchange the propane tanks when they get rusty and old or they are beyond their expiration (yes, propane tanks carry an expiration date stamped into the metal - some places won't refill tanks if they're too old, but most places don't really care although they'd be required to). Using the exchange is much cheaper than buying new tanks as replacements. Store clerks usually don't care, so whenever I have an old, rusty dinged up tank that needs to be replaced I just head over to the grocery store and use the exchange for $20 (saving me some $30 because new tanks cost in the $50 range). My trailer has the same tires as my tow vehicle, that way I have 2 spares and they fit everywhere. But then, I had my offroad trailer built to match my jeep, so all of them have the same 35" tires. I just put this out here because it's great to have matching tires on the entire rig, but that is probably not possible for regular trailers since those tires would be way too large for almost all trailers and of course it's a matter of cost too: buying expensive all- or mudterrain tires for your trailer adds up. Funny thing is, I started doing 6 wheel tire rotations after long trips - that way the trailer tires wear evenly to the jeep so I can exchange all of them at once when the time comes. I actually follow the recommendation of your grandpa: I always exchange all tires at the same time except spares if they're still in good condition. Costs a bit more but you don't want to be stuck with old tires someplace out there.

You might want to look at Sewer Solutions by Valtara, especially since you don't have a black tank to drain. It uses a heavy duty 1 in hose and will gravity feed draining your gray water tank if you don't have access to pressure fresh water. Using the pressure water (in a gray hose) it will force a jet of water into the drain hose allowing you to actually drain up hill (a couple of feet of elevation). Safe travels!
