I remember the beautiful, high quality fabrics available when I was a kid in the 60s/70s. The hand, the drape, the variety of weaves, the quality of fiber, the patterns and colors, , , once common even in small towns - almost nowhere to be found now. Ready made clothes also were made to last. The problem with cotton then and now is that it is the most pesticide polluted crop there is. Silk uses a lot of water. Semisynthetics (cellulose based) like bamboo and rayon, require a lot of water and chemicals to produce. Synthetics are of course a main source of nano/microplastic pollution. We are left with organic cotton, linen, wool, and the like. I won't even start on the dyes, ,

Here in New Zealand, in the 1960's I was in the last year that we had "school milk" provided free to prevent the permanent crippling malformation of RICKETS. Which had been a problem since the deprivations of the 1930's Depression and World War 2 food shortages. Our milk was in glass bottles, non-refrigerated it was delivered by a milkman in the early morning into a wooden box (would have been nicer to drink if it was kept refrigerated icy cold). The milk bottles were small, not sure if it was (about 200 ml), third of a pint or (about 300 ml) half a pint. However as a 5-year-old, the bottle seemed huge. Note a standard bottle of milk in those days was one pint (about 600 ml) and half pint bottles were used for Cream. The smaller bottles of ordinary milk, were not sold retail, used just for school milk. NZ changed to fully metricated units in weights and measures in the early 1970's. 'Merica's still working towards that LOL.

I agree that the dairy industry is terrible. However, the idea that we were not meant to consume dairy just because we are the only species that does it, doesn't make a lot of sense. Many animals have ecological niches where they have adapted to consume a certain food that no other species consumes. As humans, we have a unique ability to domesticate other animals, which is why we are able to use the milk of other animals. And I bet if other animals had that ability, they would also be drinking the milk of other animals. Whether milk is healthy is another question, and since nutritional science is rarely straightforward, you can often find studies that show a food increases the risk of certain diseases, and other studies that show that that same food protects against other diseases. I recently heard of a study that shows eating yogurt regularly can help with depression. But yogurt and cheese also have health benefits that milk itself doesn't have, because of their microorganisms. It also depends on the person, like some people are lactose intolerant, but not everyone is. For any food, you can usually find some people who are allergic or intolerant.

But I do buy Old Navy tops and dresses a lot at secondhand shops because they are "vetted" through someone else wearing and washing before me, and they are the items that actually hold up. Me and my husband are non-smokers, but went to a party last summer with about 1/3 of the attendees vaping on and off throughout the evening. It honestly wasn't too noticeable, nothing like smoking, so we didn't mind it much. If everyone had been smoking, we wouldn't have stayed long at the party. The next morning we went out on a long walk as we often do. BOTH of us were coughing up phlegm that was kinda flavored (yuck!) and we kept coughing for 2 hours. It was disgusting and eye-opening!

Former heavy smoker of 17 years here: You need to break all habits - for 30 days - that go along with smoking, since they trigger your "cigarette hunger". 10% is nicotine addiction, 90% is habit. - Coffee/alcohol and cigs - smoking breaks with your colleagues - party gatherings or meetings with people who smoke - smoking routine on regular parts of the day, e.g. when you go home from work, etc. The best time to start quitting is when you're not on your daily schedule anyways, like holidays or such. It's way easier to change habits for said 30 days. - Watch YT videos for quitting and use apps that count the days you managed to NOT smoke. It's hard, but it works. It's only 30 days of your life but absolutely worth it. Been smoke free for 10 years now.

Thank you so much! Agree with all except milk substitutes. Nut milks, after a meteoric production raise, are starting to fall off. Why, because many people cannot tolerate them long term. And there are certain nut milks that are being considered to be removed from the market, cashew milk I believe. You look like and talk like a vegetarian, so probably are opposed to heavy processing and additives. You won't find anything more processed or adulterated than nut milks. Correction: There is one thing worse on that score and that is fake meat. There is nothing on earth more processed and unnatural than fake meat. The stock price of the biggest brand of fake meat is now down 90% from its high. BTW, I'm 81 years old and for many years have only consumed goat milk and cheese. And I know the goats personally. They are my friends. Another thing, goats are hilarious and very mischievous, and very smart. A goat will GET your attention one way or another. Another thing, goats will not eat grains unless starved to it. So I'm also missing out on all the poisons and GMO adulteration associated with grains. Another point: The latest vast mis-application of resources is "Carbon Sequestration" and, once again, this is being driven by US government tax policy, just like the vast oversupply of electric vehicles, and broken down windmills. If CO2 was a big immediate threat, (see the recent KZbin talk by Konstantin Kissin at the Oxford Union), it is literally impossible for countries other than China and India to have any effect on atmospheric CO2 in this century. But if you deem it essential to reduce CO2, then the best way is to convert all vehicles, transportation and electricity generation to natural gas, symbol CH4, 4 Hydrogen atoms to each Carbon atom. (This would give us time for long term solutions, like nuclear, as Bjorn Borg, former Greenpiece President has said.) And most vehicles can be converted pretty cheaply. And you'll produce 1/2 the CO2 as gasoline, etc. How do I know this? I live in Texas, (after I retired), on the same farm where I was born. When I was a kid we converted all pickups, trucks, and tractors to run on propane/butane which is another volatile very similar to methane (natural gas). It burns so clean that our engines would last twice as long as other fuels. Why, because no carbon fouls the combustion chamber. Butane and propane are now too expensive because they are used for so many other things, like plastics and even clothes (remember polyester pants suits). Natural Gas is an excellent substitute. I am old, so may die before morning, so have one complaint about your Prime Minister Trudeau. His idea to build windmills to distill water to produce Hydrogen for automobiles is the stupidest waste of resources on earth, plus produces vast quantities of carbon, (for propellers, etc), for which disposal is already a problem in Texas. Just use Natural Gas, benefits shown above. And, Canada, US and Russia have vast quantities of Natural Gas, enough to power the entire world for at least 500 years! One more thing, this is the main reason for the Ukraine War. Primarily the US through Bidens and AOCs Green New Deal, was a plan to take control of Energy Production, then limit it to starve the world and make them submit to a New World Order, ie, the Great Reset, Karl Schwab, you will eat bugs, and you will be happy, etc. They succeeded in collapsing the government of The Netherlands, by among other things limiting nitrogen fertilizer, which, BTW, comes from Natural Gas. They had to destroy Russia's market for Natural Gas to Europe. It has been a disaster. We will be lucky if we don't have a worldwide famine in another year. Well, good luck to you and thanks for your insight.

I think it's hard but not impossible. Also, it makes an impact even if you cut back 25% or 80% (about what I have done personally, maybe close to 90%). You truly do not have to buy all the most expensive plant based options either. With a little creative shopping and cooking you can find affordable replacements and protein sources.
@learningisfun21087 ай бұрын
It’s not that hard. I’ve been a vegetarian for 30+ years (back when people really raised eyebrows when I said “I’m vegetarian” and they’d say, “but what do you eat?” and I’d say “I simply avoid cows, pigs, and chickens”; obviously I’d also avoid lamb, goat, turkey, but you get the point). I do eat fish and I may cut that out of my diet too. As for dairy and eggs, I may find those much more challenging to remove. Our society is accustomed to planning a meal around a meat protein but if we thought of grains and veggies first, it’s not that different. I love that I am less harmful on the environment than if I ate meat, and it tends to be healthier. But I could no longer ignore the suffering of animals just for my eating pleasure. The moral issue is the most profound, IMO. But I find it hard to bring up the topic because it makes people feel badly (and I don’t want to come across as a social justice warrior). People would rather just ignore the suffering of non human species and enjoy their steak or KFC. As an aside, chickens are probably rather most abused species ever! Lastly, sorry for my rambling if you made it this far. LOL

I’m gardening and getting backyard chickens soon so I know my girls will be well cared for (not shoved in a huge shed eating corn/soy slop). They can frolic in my yard and eat bugs and grass :)

Done with Dairy! My Mom, who was born in the 30's, was raised with cows that belonged to her grandparents. She would drink fresh cow milk as a little girl. She said it was so good (so creamy & non-pasteurized). The cows got to keep their young and the milk was 'shared' with the calves. It was not a commercial operation. It's not that way most of the time anymore, but it would be so nice if things were how it used to be and should be still now. I still think the hormones could be an issue, but at least they weren't injected with 'growth hormones' etc. back then. Was so sad for the cow chasing the truck with her calf leaving. It would be nice to live near a 'humane' dairy farm.
