With so many seals running to the water, communication becomes crucial. We run, we shout, and we point. This is a job we wish wasn’t necessary, but unfortunately, we find ourselves saving these innocent animals from products of human negligence. Although our efforts are just a drop in the bucket, it’s always great when we give an entangled animal a second chance at life.

Hi all! One seal saved per minute is the pinnacle of perfection. But for this you will have to work, at a minimum, to dry the net (sometimes repair it), fold it, take it out before leaving, load it into the car, and then quickly run with it! But there is still a lot of equipment that requires attention. 5 happy seals in 5 minutes is the price of daily hard work. Thanks guys! Today is March 31, 2024. With so many seals that need to be checked on the run. I can see where all of you would have to carry 2 or 3 short handled nets on your backs, and using your long handled nets for your first capture. I think that these guys should alway encourage the seal to back out of the net. It’s their natural instinct to go forward which is why they go all the way to the end of it. When they start to get entangled, maybe they might learn to try to back out of it and learn a way to escape that might help them get out before it’s too late.

2:04 I used to have a roll of that stuff. It is a strong twine-like string. All my Chinese neighbors used that stuff to tie boxes and plants and stuff.

We scan the different groups of Cape fur seals with binoculars from far away, looking for imperfections in their fur. This is a skill we wish we never had to develop, but we are unfortunately very experienced by now.

That must be terrifying to think of one of those capture nets being washed away into the water, because that is a worst case scenario entanglement. Any seal that gets in one of those in the ocean is never coming back up.
