6:19 I had this exact moment twice on Sunday playing DnD. We all had to wait like 2 Min doing nothing. Of course it was cool that the rouge did lots of damage, but it was difficult to keep the excitement high.

It’s crazier how you don’t notice the massive issue with less stats, or the immersion breaking prime modifier, like honestly I’m blown away by the amount of failed investigation checks to understand this system, especially considering a scrawny genius can wield heavy armor and a two handed great axe because freedom 😂😂

​@@shamanspointofview8083you still can't dump stat your Might score to wear heavy armor. It needs at least a +1. So you need to be a genius (+3 int) with above average health and strength to wear heavy armor.

my number one fix over 5e is Deaths Door, the amount of times I've been down and nobody heals me because actions are too "expensive" is really frustrating. Deaths Door makes healing more important and the 4AP system helps resolve this too but I can still do things if I'm "down". LOVE THAT SO MUCH

I played a Commander for the first time this weekend. I honestly didn't think I would enjoy it, but giving someone a help due and then using commanders call to have them attack, killed a lot of creatures faster than expected. The character that got the free attack was rolling with advantage and a help due. This practically guarantees a hit, if not stronger hits. And the use of the so to heal someone kept the tank alive really well.

@@alexabel8010 unfortunately, I didn't have many opportunities to roleplay it. I was late to the session and I built it in about 5 minutes because I wanted to try out the gameplay mechanics. If I had to roleplay him, he was intelligence based, and so not so much of a "you go here and do this" type, but giving analytical advice to his allies during battle and helping them to succeed.

I think video on the martial classes would be cool please. The spellcasting one was pretty good, I think a more details video on how the martials are all different and special, and how they can be cool would be a good selling point Vs DND with the terrible balance between them.

​@ianamburn3151 The alpha covers everything you need for levels 1 and 2. It's is alot of fun to play and run. I've run 3 one shots my self, and started 1 campaign with my 3 kids ages 8, 10, 12. It has been awesome.

I would really love to back it, but the campaign does not to seem to work with the debit card that is registered with my Kickstarter. Only having a true credit card seems to work.

12:45 this also the number one reason why planing for the most optimal turn tooks so long time. Looking for Features which can be combined wit bonus actions and Actions spells which can be combined with bonus action features. And of course at the same time start using concentration as soon as possible. This can be challenging even for an experienced player.

Prediction: DC20 can't retain relevance for more than 12 months. I guarantee no one will be talking about it this time next year, because it's a full-on player acquisition focused system.

@@yurisei6732 The fact that you’re responding to such an absurd post suggests that you’re having a significant emotional response to this game. It’s okay if you don’t like the system; you don’t have to play it. Alan’s design choices reflect a lot of things I do in my own (non D20) design. For me, it’s a notable improvement on current D&D, with the added benefit of not being owned by Hasbro/WotC. Will it dethrone D&D? Of course not. Will I be playing it instead of whatever WotC puts out? Certainly. Did it really increase my squat PR by 50 pounds? Probably not, but I’ve been limping through a knee injury, so it’s impossible to tell.

I have 2 favorites 1. Healing is fixed with the reworking of death saves to deaths door 2. Better power scaling means the game is fun at all levels, especially 1st level Ps: Movement more balanced which means ranged weapons are more balanced and interesting

@@matt00041 The only thing I can think of is a shotgun that uses the same size shell, but the contents of the shell can be different. Bird shot alternating with slugs, etc. But, yeah, different calibers would be a nightmare & near useless (if you exclude a rifle with a grenade launcher on it, because that's awesome).

@@zavant Yeah, that's what I was thinking. At the same time, I know there are always random guns people make that work in bizarre ways. So, maybe a better analogy is that you have different guns and limited amounts of ammo for each of them?

To be fair, in AD&D, the attribute number used to mean more. Each attribute had a table that showed everything that it did, and it was a lot.

I think they were trying too hard to simulate "realism" or something. I much prefer when you can easily derive what you need directly from the number on your sheet without having to look it up on a table. It might not always be super realistic, but at least it's relatively quick, consistent and fun.

I would like to see damage reduction, resistances and MIG vs AGI being looked at again. I think PDR and resistance could be removed and only flat resistance would stay. Makes counting so much easier

I have been part of a playtest on sunday and I have a couple of notes. Overall, I think this system has great potential so I won't repeat the good parts. I will only go into areas where I disagree, specifically from what I remember of the playtest. Counting damage is quicker than collecting damage dice, but I felt like it was more confusing for the other players. They seemed impressed when I dual-slingshot the monster for a total of 11 points of damage, but they had no idea how I did that. And when their own turn came, they were quickly disappointed when they "only" did 4 damage in total. Having a physical representation can matter for some people. It's also a lot easier to forget a point of damage if you don't have it fixed on your sheet or a readied dice pool like many have for things like sneak attack. The action point system is actually not easy to track. It's really hard to follow someone else's turn with all those small things you can do with action points. "And wait, was that an action point or a stamina point I spent? Do I still have my stamina point? Oh no, I forgot that I already used one AP for an opportunity attack five turns ago so I couldn't have performed that maneuver." Those were regular occurrances every round. And all of those players had years of experience with both 5e and Pathfinder. One of the players picked a druid. And they were so overwhelmed with how front loaded that class is, they just turned into to bear and didn't even try to engage with anything else. At least they were pretty tanky as Might was their prime stat. Overall, I don't like the game in its current iteration. I feel like there are two many subsystems, the PDF is structured horribly and some very niche parts are overdesigned while some important bits for actually playing it are missing completely. I cannot fathom why you'd make the decision to make a combat simulator and not provide a single enemy to fight against. Our GM had to use a statblock from what looked like a much older playtest with mechanics that don't exist anymore. When you started developing I had the feeling the main motivation was youtube content. And it still kind of feels like that motivation is the deciding factor in which parts of the game are added next. Which might not be ideal? Like, why do you have a prestige level system or three subsystems for armor when you can't even fight some bad guys with the playtest? But then again, there is a pretty cool system somewhere in all of this. It might not be for me. But if all of those small systems are bundled up in a way that's a bit more coherent, it's definitely an enjoyable game. But as it stands I personally wouldn't back it. But way more than enough people did, so I'm glad you can keep the project in development. I'll be coming back when some time has passed to see where things are going.

It's remarkable how subtle yet important that last one is. Just simply knowing when a player's turn is over so the game can move on. Easy to take for granted yet one of the bajillion little things that slows down 5e.

My only issue with the set up is that it loses some of the satisfying game feel of rolling dice. I fully understand why you are doing things the way you are. It’s simpler, it’s more efficient, it makes sense, I am not saying your way is necessarily wrong. But there is also a less logical and more emotional joy that is being lost. It feels good to roll a bunch of dice. There is a level of fear and tension when the dm gathers up dice for an enemies damage. Yes it slows things down but those are also sometimes some of the best moments getting to gather up a bunch of dice and roll them all at once. People like getting to roll their shiny math rocks, there is a reason there are so many “dice goblins” out there and while again I can’t argue to logic and reason behind why you made the choice you did I can see a fair number of people feeling like some of the spark is lost with those moments gone.

There's still plenty of ways to roll lots of dice in one turn, thanks to stacking advantage mainly. Also, this system seems to trade rolling a lot of dice at once for rolling less dice more often. Which I think is a fair compromise.

I like rolling all of the different types of dice. Only using a d20 for the whole game for sure makes it simpler and more efficient. However, i don’t think it makes it more enjoyable. I want to try the system out to see if this translates, but I’m too much of a dice goblin to put 85% of my collection to waste

It is funny that one of the first games I played (that was like DnD) some 20 years ago had no spell levels or slots and had mana points instead. Also damage was calculated like attack roll (+ bonuses) minus defense roll (+ bonuses). No additional roll for damage. So both rules worked more or less like those in DC20 and I am really happy that DC20 somewhat merges both games and could make something great and for me quite nostalgic.

Sat in a 5e game a buddy was running for some of his family and trying to get them up to speed felt agonizing. So many moments where my friend was explaining things and I was just like wow why is this overcomplicated... "Take your move speed, divide by 5 that's how many squares you move", just move 5 squares lol

So, three comments about this video: #1) That legacy thing you were talking about is true. It make total sense with pre-3rd edition to have 3-18 ability scores since they had charts that talk about various sub ability scores. But modern day D&D does not use that, so why hold on to that stuff? I mean, 1st & 2nd edition D&D is still available (and fun to play on occasion), but if you want to be modern, then don't worry about those things (that's what made 4E, now called 13th Age, so awesome). #2) That goes with spell slots. Today's D&D's version of the spell slot system is way more complicated than AD&D (and B/X's). Unless you are trying to simulate OD&D, then why stick to it? Even Shadowdark (my current favorite version of D&D) has a better system that still feels old school. If they are moving away from these things, then they need to streamline it, not complicate it (that's what Pathfinder is for lol). #3.) OMG, you are spot on with the random damage thing in D&D. My wife always rolls awesome, only to roll crap for damage. Keep being awesome!

I’ve started using the 1-roll system with my D&d campaign and I freakin love it. I found online someone who posted a table of static damage numbers that is statistically close to rolling damage. Like a d6 for base damage = 3 on a hit, 7 on a heavy hit and 11 on brutal. It just feels more dynamic like it highs are high and the lows are low. 10 out of 10 would recommend. Contemplating a way to incorporate the same system into spell casting. The straight damage spells are easy and the same as weapon damage but the save for effect are taking a lot of Bain oartt

Benifit 1: Nah. I've never found the stat system difficult. Magic once it was explained once I got it. same with my players. It may not be "intuitive" but I don't think it's difficult and it works well and feels like I have a more interesting character. Benifit 2: no thanks. I prefer rolling dice for damage. Benifit 3: I do like stamina and magic points. I don't like the "once per day but wait there's inititive" thing. takes a lot of the drama of it away. Benifit 4: I'll have to reserve judgment. haven't run it yet. (run DnD a lot and don't find it difficult) Benifit 5: Really? A quick "you done?" is too much? I won't knock again cause haven't run, but doesn't seem impressive. Don't mean to be so negative, but I was curious if I was missing something and turns out.. no not really.

About the dice for damage. I think the most frustrating thing in DnD is when you crit but roll damage badly, making basically a normal hit. So I really appreciate DC20 rule about it.

It’s so funny how a few months ago before I discovered DC20 I was trying to add mechanics like in the game into my 5e like mana pools, something for martial classes to do like stamina and magic clashes, thank you so much for the game I wanted!

Never heard of you before this game started blowing up, but I like the cut of your gib! I've been working on my own private little RPG of my own, and it's neat to see some of the parallel thought! I ditched damage dice in the literal first draft of project, because I realized how much more sense it made to just have your attack roll determine how much damage you do. It makes more sense narratively too! Oh, your dice roll just barely hit your target's AC? Well your attack just barely hit them, and did minimal damage. Oh, you rolled really well, and blew right past your opponent's AC with your attack roll? Well your attack blew right past your opponent's defenses, and you hit them where it hurts for MAX DAMAGE!! I've been in love with that idea for several years now (since before the pandemic) and it's heart warming to see that idea get the mass recognition it deserves (even if I am jealous that it's not my game bringing it into the zeitgeist.) Best of luck with this project man! You've got a lot of great ideas, and I can wait to see how this game turns out!

Me, too! My own stuff addresses the same design concepts. I hope Alan’s work ends up having a transformative effect on RPGs. I love D&D (playing since ‘79), but I’d like to see the game evolve past some of the clunkier legacy mechanics.

Class features are limited to level 2 in Alpha.7. I did back it for 3rd party development reasons. I'm currently pushing hard for a notable expansion of the Prime Stat ideology in combat but we'll see how that shakes out.

I remember how complicated it was to understand 5e when I first started. It's like they kept patching a system overtime but never got around to really fixing it. If you can get a new group of people up and running in less than an hour that's a down right miracle.

Once this game is more developed I would love love love to see the rules written along with colored designs/ graphics that represent resources, checks, defenses, and saves because it can get confusing reading through all the new names and acronyms!

I'm so looking forward to running this! My group is excited, too. We play online because we're all over the world, but that just means the dice thing is easier! I just have to figure out how to use it in Roll20, though.

I really like the idea that attack rolls determine the damage you deal. I don't care for the naming system, however. What if instead it went something like heavy< extra heavy< brutal< extra brutal< savage< extra savage. It still is intuitive but now there is a name for each step in power.

I binge-watched your videos.Your excitement and happiness in talking about the project are so great that you don't even need advertising or other KZbinrs talking about it.From afar, DC20 is far superior to D&D and I'm eager to bring this system to my players here in Brazil. Congratulations on the incredible work, you can tell when the system is designed by someone who wants money and someone who loves TTRPG

I gotta say, while I'm still not entirely sold on the name DC20, I am sold on the game systems, especially the action point system and mana point system. I've backed the Kickstarter and can't wait to have a go at it!

Waht i really like as a DM is the Advantage with Action Points. Its not really a secret but sometimes your monsters just need to hold the ground for Caster or Archer in the Backline. So what i start to do with my Frontline Monsters i don’t ask me what to i just attackt and give one or two advantages. So that the frontline where actually treats how can’t be so easy ignore for the backline caster.

I only run twice one shots i will probably change up what with monster tactics. But Advantage is just nice if you don’t know what to do with my monster. I always try to do monster turns as fast as possible for my players.

4E had something a lot like the Actions system here. You could trade bigger actions for smaller. In 4E spells (and powers in general) matched the level when you gain it. At 4th level, you gain a 4th level power. D&D has the stats that way so you can have steps /between/ +2 and +3. That said, I wish they had made better use of the numbers as they are.

Stuff from older games that bothered me: Buff stacking (3.5e), complicated cover rules how is DC20 on this? Can you stack spells on yourself or does it use the 5e concentration 1 spell rule? Likely too early, but is the balance working in terms of CR? Hopefully: Better non combat rules - social encounters/ off time Guides for wealth per Lv etc Caster vs melee balance?

Coach, I just wanted to let you know that this system you have made is THE system I have been needing in my life, but I just didn't know. I was introduced to TTRPGs through 1st edition Pathfinder. For the longest time, it has been my preferred system to play was 1st edition Pathfinder, even more than playing 5e DnD. After the OGL scandal, I had been looking for a new system to try. I had already, slowly, been getting some 2e Pathfinder books when I saw a video talking about your system. There are things I like about 5e, but plenty I don't, and have already been homebrewing them for my home games. There are things I really like about 2e Pathfinder, and even Daggerheart was looking good too, but the systems are not EXACTLY what I have been looking for. Please believe me when I say, when it comes to DC 20, every time I see a new mechanic being explained, and I learn more about the system, I only love the system more and more. I truly wish that I could afford to give more money to the Kickstarter, but I've backed for a hardcover, and I will be telling my friends, and both my home group, and my online group, about DC 20, and backing it if they like it as much as I do!

Just wanted to point out that there is another way we can help DC20 grow. Apart from backing the more DC20 videos we watch (and like) on youtube from any creator, the more we give it free advertising through the algorithm. I'm so excited! Already backed the project. I especially like the action economy and how stamina/mana points work. I do wish it had a better name though, haha.

I made a whole video about this but for me the biggest secret benefit is the maneuver system (and spells work similar). On paper it sounds neat but then when playing it really clicks together how much you can customize your attack to be the exact attack you want to make that turn. That turn do you need more accuracy or do you push for bigger damage or is this the perfect time to trip or push a foe. You can mix and match to swing your weapon in a unique and different way every time. DC20 accomplishes this goal so much better than most other systems by being so modular and flexible with how you can customize your attack each turn.

While from a design standpoint, I like the simplicity of one die handling attack and damage--I think you may have overlooked the appeal of rolling a big handful of dice.

Why have a different system for "once per long rest" and "once per combat" if the resource comes back once you roll initiative again? does this not make both of them "once per combat" or am i not understanding something properly?

i think theres really only one gripe i have with dnd, that i dont know yet if dc20 fixes. how easy and quick is it to make a character? particularly with people who've never played it?

I have an idea for a mana guage to see how much mana you have left. Maybe use a sand timer ⏳(blue sand of course) lay it on its side when not in use. Each spell requires a certain amount of time (mana) to complete a spell. When you're out of sand you're out of mana and your spells fail with chaotic results.

Hey DC, I have a concern that you may be able to address. One major reason I've moved away from 5e is I've grown weary of the character build arms race that's been going on in the hobby for nearly a quarter century, a race in which I was an active participant. Does DC 20 do anything to avoid this, or does it embrace it?

Can you compare DC20 to pathfinder second edition? I feel like there are a lot of similarities (like the 3/4 action system) but everything is even more refinded, with pf2e being kind of in the middle between dnd and dc20. I'd really appreciate a video covering that topic.

On the last one, I actually have an alternative Initiative method that keeps everyone engaged as long as they have stuff to do. Basically, whoever has the most Actions goes first. And once somebody else has more actions, they go next. However, if somebody passes, they don't move in Initiative anymore unless they take a Reaction, but it's still clear that they don't get to take another turn since they're probably above everyone else in Initiative.

Congratulations, DC20 sems until now a great game. I heard about DC20 on a brazilian rpg youtube channel just a feel days ago and i´ve been watching your videos since then... Just a question, are you planing to put DC20 on Roll20 or other digital table? This kind of plataforms realy makes easyer play our favorite hobby.

I like what I am hearing, but it is funny to me, that these are framed as secret benefits. Like, other systems have done these things before, just not DnD. Anyway, nothing wrong with pooling the good stuff from different systems, giving it your own spin, and making it work together to create something new and exciting.
