This video makes it very clear the amount of practice you need to do to get that fast. Personally, i haven't got the dedication. This is why i play the blues.

haha, the blues is also very technical though, in a different way :D

@jaredt3985 , yes, and i love how fluid it is with those bends and vibrato and soul.

These techniques are general and can be applied to any style. I know there are blues licks that are very technically demanding that these techniques can be applied to.

Awesome tips! I've been playing since the late 80s and never got there, speed-wise. I can do the slower and more melodic type of playing; Joe Satriani has been my favourite guitarist since "Surfin' with the Alien" came out but then I'd listen to players like Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony Macalpine or Vinnie Moore and couldn't even imagine how anyone plays that fast. You make it look easy. Subbed!

Please could you make a KZbin short where you apply this shred lick over a backtrack or chord progression. I've been practicing this lick for a while and as I'm getting better at it, I'm finding it quite difficult to apply the lick in pocket within a musical context. Thanks for the video, I look forward to your response❤.
@fulltimeguitarАй бұрын
I'll see what i can do :) just curious though, what backing track/ chords are you playing it over? and is it a key or timing issue ?
@ethereal1000Ай бұрын
@@fulltimeguitar My guitar is on a standard tuning, not Eb tuning, so I just recorded myself playing D#min twice, Bmaj to C#maj per bar(4/4) in a loop, my issue is not a key issue at all but more of the timing of the lick considering when to start the lick to smoothly fit in to the ending of a full bar considering the lick spans for around 1.5bars.
@fulltimeguitar29 күн бұрын
@@ethereal1000 Yeah i think the lick technicaly lands on the 3 of the second bar, you are correct. if you wanted it to land right on the 1 of the next bar, you'd have to start it on the 3. sorry if that doesent make sense, i'll see if i can find an excuse to deomonstrate that in a video soon :D

very solid advice, but this video has a little problem that kinda bothers me, as every similar video has. this is going to help you with "pre made licks", not playing fast per se. I'll give an example, imagine rapping. now imagine that you memorized some fast lines. you can use them to fill in the space between the improvised ones, keeping speed and momentum. but you can't go to a rap battle with just memorized lines. playing guitar is the same. you throw in the licks to keep momentum and speed, and to show technique and intensity. you can't build a solo of just premade licks. they help you to an extent with building speed, but it doesn't replace what I consider the simple yet very long (but rewarding) path of: 1. playing a scale up and down with a metronome, then 2. playing a scale with random notes through the neck (with a metronome!!!), and finally 3. using this scale to improvise. just put in a backing track and play over it. if you practiced enough noodling with the scale, you will have build the muscle memory and association between sound and physical movement. you get to know kinda where the notes are, and you have the dexterity to play them, so you can focus on trying to find melodies that fits with the harmony, focusing on the chords and etc, not necessarily consciously, just looking for what sounds good (don't worry about playing slowly). if you feel like you are stuck to a speed, you pick your scale and do the 3 steps again while increasing it. THIS is the bread and butter of shredding, it's the base. there is no secret to it, and it takes a LOT of time. but THEN you can implement these exercises to make it more efficient. licks are necessary to really shred but they don't make anything by themselves. if you focus on licks and forget the rest, you are literally putting the most important part (which is sounding musical with your instrument) for a tool to play better. it's the other way around!!! focus on being musical and THEN these exercises, I would say.
