The jaw part always confused me, I can never tell if I'm closing my jaw or not.

Best way to monitor it is to watch yourself in the mirror - but the best way to achieve it is to study vocal technique. It's a process that you work on in technique to stretch the jaw so it can naturally open on your vowels. You don't want to force it!
