Greg, you're exactly the kind of instructor i like. You seem really positive, have a great energy, and are clearly passionate about what you do. On top of that, you're clearly experienced and knowledgeable, unlike some videos where it's obviously the presenter's first time trying a technique.

Hi Greg! All of your videos are so helpful. I just started metalsmithing and took a class. Got home with lots of materials to recreate the ring and the soldering was not as easy without the instructor giving step by step instruction. I was getting very frustrated and went to KZbin for help. I watched many videos that helped but my technique was still hit or miss and although I could get EZ solder to work about half the time, hard solder was impossible for me. After finding your videos I am moving right along. Your teaching is so precise, direct, informative and down to earth - friendly, but with no wasted chatter. You inspire confidence with your easy manner and give tons of information without it feeling like an overload. Thank you for sending your great knowledge out into the world for people to learn from and create beautiful things. You are a treasure.

@@greggreenwood4628 in your opinion, what is the easiest solder to work with? I have tried easy through hard silver solder and haven't been able to figure out which technically flows easiest. So, if I am able to choose one solder for a project, what types do you think are easiest to work with and easiest to get to flow? The paste does seem to work well, but I don't care for the look of it as much as more traditional solders. Thanks!!

Hi Greg. I've just discovered your videos in the last year and love the tips and tricks you give. You are my go-to metalsmithing guru. You have helped me immensely already and I'm hoping you can also help me with a significant soldering problem I have. I work mostly with copper and so far I have not had any success with soldering 6ga half-round copper bangles. Your instructions are spot-on and I follow them precisely, (the joints have good tension and are flush). So I think the problem might be the liquid Aqui-Flux I am using. I have both painted it on and sprayed it on, but it does not bubble or turn whitish when I torch it. There is a slight reaction to my bangles, and the charcoal block turns white where it got a bit of flux, but not the copper. I have tried E, M, & H silver pallions and H soldering wire, plus H solder paste - same unsoldered result for all. I did try sweat soldering 2 flat pieces of copper together, and that worked brilliantly, so I do not know what I am doing wrong with the bangles. Can you help? Thank-you (for EVERYTHING).
@greggreenwood462810 ай бұрын
Hello Sharon, Thank you for your kind comments. I appreciate it. As for your copper bangles. Do not use aqui-flux on that thick of copper. Use borax flux. I use Handy Flux. It is a prepared borax flux and is a milk shake consistency. The aqui flux is burning off before the metal can get hot enough to melt the solder. Copper will oxidize faster when heated so you must protect the surface with a good borax flux. Let me know how it goes. Greg Greenwood

The reminder to flux the solder itself was very helpful, thank you so much.

Hi Brian, Glad that tip was a help for you. Also, before you cut your pallions of solder, clean the solder strip with steel wool or emery to remove any oxides that have formed while your solder has been sitting around. I like to ownly use enough solder for the project I am working on and not cut it in advance. This way the solder is always fresh and clean for the soldering job. Have fun soldering. Greg Greenwood

Hello Mighty Red, Thank you for your great comments. I really appreciate them and I am very happy to help jewelers with questions. As for your hammers. If you are starting with a very rusty hammer face, then start at the beginning: Emery cloth and paper. If you have to file, do it before the emery. Emery sticks are a great help when I'm working up an old hammer. Seems to work faster. Then move to the polishing wheel. You can find steel polishing compounds on line or Rio Grande has Dialuz Grey Premium Polishing compound #331080. $4.75 a bar. If you don't have steel compound, I have used my white diamond or tripoli compound. If just takes a little longer. When you have that mirror finish, protect it with vaseline, silicone, or any oil to seal the "goodness" in. Remember, it is easier to do a little extra polishing every few times you use the hammer, than picking up the hammer excited to do some forging and it has a coating of rust. Time Wasted! Thanks again. You are questions are always welcome. Greg Greenwood

On the videos, sometimes it looks like I am filing in both directions and sometimes you get into an area on a piece that you cannot lift the file. Thanks for the wonderful tutorial. I am working on a box ring where the construction requires that the ring be soldered to a plate... then the plate is filed down to fit the contour of the ring. After watching your video where you only had two palions of solder I have decided to flux, heat the flux to dry it out then place my solder and fire. Will let you know how it went.

This explains so much regarding my past success and failures at soldering. One thing you didn't mention, however, is the heat source. I failed miserably at trying to solder a bezel to a sterling silver cuff bracelet with the butane torch that has worked so well with smaller projects. Should I invest in an acetylene torch for bigger projects?
@greggreenwood46283 жыл бұрын
Hello anitamyersdds, If you are serious and will be soldering more bracelets etc. in the future, I would recommend you get an acetylene torch. I have a "preso-lite" acetylene / air mix torch with a "B" tank. I use different sized tips and can do everything from jump rings to melting scrap for castings. Go for it!! The best to you. Thank you for the video! I am a grade 12 student, and I am making a Cuban link chain in my Art Metal class at school. I watched this video to prepare me for the soldering process so I can make strong joints that wont snap as much during the twisting process. Any tips for twisting cubans?
@greggreenwood4628 Жыл бұрын
Hello Peter, You are so lucky to have an art metal class at school. Tip #1. Check out the rest of my soldering videos, I'm sure they will be helpful in your class and your project. Tip #2. Make sure you anneal your metal links before you solder the links together. This will make the links twist easier and not have as much tension. Tip#3. Make sure you follow the 5 Secrets. Doing this, you will have good strong solder joints and they will not snap apart. Having good soldering habits from the start will always make the job better and easier. It is very exciting for me to hear that you are learning art metal at a young age. It is an interesting and fun field. I have been working with metal for over 50 years and am always learning new things about metal every day. Please let me know how your chain turns out. Also, if you have any questions in the future, please let me know. I am here to help. Good Luck Peter! Greg Greenwood

@@greggreenwood4628 Thanks so much for replying to my comment! Its very nice to see a creator who is so involved with their audience. I have a question: I am wondering how or what I should use to hold my chain down for the filing process once its all twisted and laid flat. I heard that something like shellac resin is used, but I am not sure where to get it, or what to look for. Do you know of any alternatives or products that I could easily access online like amazon? I am not sure if you have had a lot of experience with that side of jewlery making, but you are probably the most educated person I can ask, so I thought I would shoot my shot. Thanks for your time.
@greggreenwood4628 Жыл бұрын
Hello Peter, Jeweler's shellac is available on line. Here is a link to a supplier. www.esslinger.com/jewelers-shellac-gemstone-setting-assist/ You will be melting the shellac onto the edge of a board a little longer than your chain. 1x3 or 1x4 . Put the board in a vise with the thin edge up. (Up right position). Melt some shellac onto the board edge. Nail your chain down at one end and lay the chain into the shellac. Melt some more shellac onto the chain to secure it to the board. When the board is in the upright position, it is easy to file at any angle you wish. To remove the chain, simple heat the chain, pull out of the shellac and clean off with denatured alcohol. An alternative to the shellac is to hot glue your chain to the board. It is sometimes hard to remove all of the hot glue afterwards. If nothing else, you can nail down the two ends of the chain after pulling tight. This of course is not the best, but can work. I hope this helps you. Let me know how it goes! Greg Greenwood

Once you understand that it’s the capillary action that wicks the filler into the join (so well demonstrated here) it’s easier to get an idea of how it’s supposed to look as you’re soldering the joint.

Thank you Greg this was a great informative video. Do you have a video on how to eliminate fire scale? I have seen several different videos and tried their techniques but they do not work. This is the monster I am working with right now.
@greggreenwood46282 жыл бұрын
Hello Dawn, Thank you for your comments. Yes, I have a video " Firescale, What is it?" Check it out. I hope it helps you. Firescale can be a real pain! Your best solution is to make sure that you protect the silver from oxygen. If you have to paint the entire piece in borax flux, this might be the only way to prevent it. Also, protect the silver when you anneal it and do not over heat. Many people forget about protecting when annealing. If you don't, you have firescale right from the beginning and it won't make any difference when you are soldering. You already have it!! Let me know how it goes. Greg Greenwood

@@greggreenwood4628 thanks again, I will go check that video out. I just started using boric acid on the piece I'm making right now. I have a question but I'll watch your video first, you may answer it.

Excellent video! Great information. Question…should the melting point of the flux be close to, higher(I’d guess not), or lower than the melting point of the solder?
@greggreenwood462811 ай бұрын
Hello Scott, The melting point of the flux is lower than the melting point of the solder. The flux will turn clear and look glossy right before the solder flows. Check out my soldering playlist to show more examples. Thank you for watching. Greg Greenwood
