Thank you SO much for making this video! Back in my mid-20's (I'm 48 now) I started taking guitar lessons. Started learning open chords, then got to barre chords. Of course, I found them difficult. Kept at it and at it. Then started developing sharp pain in my wrist. Told my guitar teacher about it, and he said, "You've go to push through it, man!" Well, it got bad enough that I slowed down and quit. For a while. Then every year or so I'd pick up a guitar and try to start again. Pain would come back. That cycle continued for over 20 years until a year or so ago, when I came across a video similar to this and tried physical therapy. Miracle!! With the stretches and exercises I learned at PT, I'm making great progress, including barre chords! Sorry for the long comment. Just very passionate on the topic, and wanted to share and say, if you have sharp, burning, reoccurring pain, get it checked out. And playing an instrument is like a sport - you can get hurt fast if you don't stretch and take care. Thanks SO much guys!!!

I did a few things. 1) Went to physical therapy where I learned some specific stretches. Some were in this video. Plus a few more. 2) Found this massage product that has made a HUGE difference! Probably the biggest contributor to my recovery: Roleo Hand Massager for Arthritis, Deep Tissue Massager for Carpal Tunnel Relief - Forearm Massager for Hand Therapy with Trigger Point Foam Roller - Finger Massager and Wrist Roller - Arm Massager www.amazon.com/dp/B005CP4GDA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Gn7.Eb8B6M82S 3) Short daily practice easing into the tougher chords and barre chords. Literally like 1 minute, then two, then slowly build up. Sorry for the long post. I'm just a bit passionate about this topic. Lol! I'd bet that there are lots of folks who have given up on guitar because of injuries.

About a month ago I started experiencing something really REALLY similar to what this kid is talking about with his situation and this video gives me a tremendous amount of hope thank you. Picked up guitar very seriously after a few years of not playing and worked my way up to practicing around four hours a day, making progress literally by the minute just playing into the night until I suddenly got slammed by this shit. It’s good to know I’m not alone and that there’s a road to recovery and management. I’ve backed off really seriously to the point where I’m barely playing now, but I figure I shouldn’t play through it until I can get some professional help or physical therapy. In retrospect it’s pretty obvious that I just got too excited and went WAY too hard after not playing for too long. It already feels 1000 times better after three full days off. Sucks because with corona I was just playing so damn much making a ton of progress but you just Gotta take it easy. I Have done physical therapy for other very similar injuries and was amazed at what it can do so that’s likely my next step

More so than a guitar with crappy action and overplaying, wrist issues start in the neck. Staring down at your guitar while you practice/play for hours and days months and years is the worst thing. Not to mention bobbing your head to music, if you happen to be one who does that. Fix your *forward head posture* and take care of you necks!! Another thing not mentioned here is an imbalance of the forearm muscles. Guitar players especially are constantly squeezing. Do some forearm/wrist exercises that work the outside muscle on the forearm.
@yourguitarsage6 жыл бұрын
You are indeed correct. Many don’t understand the connection.
@dushk05 жыл бұрын
Good theory, but it's wrong! I have sometimes staring neck issues, but never wrist. Just hold that wrist straight, practice proper technique (no, there's no "everyone does it differently", people who say that just can't admit they've been doing it wrong the past few decades and never took an advice) there's only one proper posture, everything else is a habit.

Many comments here say play an electric with lighter strings and l agree. Also if you play acoustic also use light strings, and lower or have your action lowered. I lowered mine 3 times before l got it right. Now it’s the height of my electric or very close. You can’t hit the low E as hard as it will buzz, but thats a small price to pay for an easier playing guitar. Thanks guys good vid.

(Eureka while watching) Wow ,I think in my case Jay hit it around 8:00. Until last week, I've been playing a Rogue acoustic guitar with strings like his guitar that was unbelievably high from the fret board .The guitar bridge was broken and partly pulled out, causing the "action" to be that high. I played through it, thinking my big, tough hand could handle it. But now that the guitar is completely broken (I'm getting a different kind), I guess I'm feeling the tendonitis type effects too with all that pushing down, especially after waking up. I wasn't even looking around on KZbin for a cause to my problem and this was suggested to me, so awesome.

Good luck with your quest for a replacement instrument. I dont know what the budget is but you can get a good affordable acoustic for around 300... Ibanez AC240. Looks pretty (at least in my opinion) and plays just as well. But definitely sit there with them in the shop dont buy it sight unseen. Also if you can get it properly setup, it will make a world of difference.

Funny, at the Guitar Center Center a few weeks I saw an ibanez cutaway for around that price and I was about to get it but my funds were not available for initial layaway. But someone else was interested in getting it so I'm sure it's indeed popular.I sure liked it when I tried it.I'll be getting a Washburn WA90CE acoustic electric vintage sunburst that was on sale for just over a hundred and twenty bucks. But I will consider the Ibanez you suggested in the future. Thank you.

Working with a metronome the past couple of weeks to try to build my speed up and I am starting to get pain around my lower fretting hand thumb area in the meaty section of the hand and my wrist some. It never started until I started pushing myself on trying to increase my speed. I am feeling it at night when I sleep too. I have tried to do all the exercises I have watch videos about and the stretching recommended. I have not played for 2 days to try to get the pain to go away. Any advice I can get would be greatly appreciated at this point.

@ArmaGuyz5 жыл бұрын
The very reason my playing is back to intermediate level is starting on a guitar with an action much too high, DO NOT DO THAT. The harder you push the more strain and swelling and the more pressure on the nerve. I had to quit playing after a year for a few weeks it came back... I kept playing. It was so irritated it even bothered me at bedtime I had to lay with my hands flat at my side. Holding a cellphones adds to the problem. I started playing again... within a few months pain was back. I quit for a for months. Im back playing I strectch my fingers before I play and it does help a little bit not much though, it seems too much stretching irritates the carpal and I can only play about 10 mins now. I also was playing an accoustic I stopped and began playing my electric. When I got my new acoustic I wanted to play it so I got light strings put on it, thought its easier its still hard. So Im back to playing my electric its a pain to hook it up everytime I want to play but its more practice and less pain and that is a good thing when learning. Youll know when its carpal tunnel syndrome. It starts to bother the palm. The finger tips in will have random jolts of pain your palem will feel funny almost like its got a spider web in the palm it will feel really strange. It will hurt anytime you grab something I type at the keyboard too but I use an elevated keyboard to help my wrist. ive asked so many teachers about carpal tunnel pain while playing and they just ignore me. No one ever has anything to say its like well sorry for ya... So my advice. Do not play for long periods. Play everyday fine but only a few mins if it starts hurting beyond just soreness STOP. take a few days off and go back to playing if you have an accoustic buy light gauge strings. Play electric. Forget all that garbage about building calous. If you are getting carpal tunnel play electric youll keep on playing it wont hurt as much and youll play longer more comfortably. Strectch lightly your fingers pulling them towards your body till you feel a soft pull stretch each finger. shake out your hands get the blood flow in your fingers FIRST. Good luck. Carpal Tunnel sucks. But you can still play just not for hours on end. Its not simple its a very serious condition that can leave you permanently disabled. SURGERY DOES NOT HELP ALL IN FACT IT HELPS FEW... Scar tissue builds and penches the nerve even more... Most surgeries fail to cure it. Do not believe a surgeon. Get an EMG to test for it if you truly believe you have it. Do stretches to help with it. Dont keep on playing if you feel like you have it and it hurts everytime. Make changes or youll find yourself in trouble fast.

I'm thankfully not one to have experienced any of these pains or symptoms. I also work in IT and spend 8 hours or thereabouts on a keyboard and then get home and want to play the guitar for a few hours. I have to emphasize form is a HUGE factor. I do stretches where applicable. Also, as he mentioned as well if you can and it works for you the string action can be a huge factor for extra muscle wear. I have 2 epiphones with very low action and didnt want to try acoustics because action is typically worse on them. I just got a Martin and I have to say the action on it is very, very low and is easy to play. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to hear the other steps.

I developed de quervain's tenosynovitis last year while plying guitar and I've been visiting physiotherapist since then, and I haven't got rid of it yet.... it's the worst feeling, not being able to learn and play guitar.

when i play guitar, very rapidly my right hand (plucking hand) goes red and I can feel numbness and slight pain because there is reduced blood flow, and I was wondering if there could be a quick fix for this. I play fingerstyle and plectrum on occasion.

I definitely have some discomfort mainly in my fretting hand and i think its only when i play a lot of barre chords. Its not extremely unbearable or anything but im just hoping it isnt an over use injury thats going to get worse. It sometimes feels like a jolt in my forearm so its a little scary and could be that carpal tunnel nerve i guess. I'll try to incorporate some of these stretches at least, thanks for the heads up.

I’ve been practicing snow hey oh which is a big step up from what I’ve normally been playing and both my arms started to hurt about 3-4 months after grinding it. I looked for a video like this because i can play the riff but my arms hurt more and more as the song goes on making me play slower and worse Should I be worried?

if i rub a certain spot on my wrist sometimes i get like a tingly jolt its weird.. hope its not beginning stages of carpal tunnel or whatever. Its only this really specific spot on the side of my wrist so maybe im just pressing on a nerve or something. and i get wrist pain playing barre chords for awhile but i think thats normal.

i know this is an old video , im 32 years old being playing guitar since i was 7 around 17-18 years old i started having this symptoms i couldnt push myself to the limits cuz of pain and numbness which they would go away in maybe 20-30 mins but the tingling lasts way more i thought it was normal since im from a small island and didnt really search about my issue so i tryed to push through the pain i had to stop playing guitar due to many health issues i had and i came back to it after 2 years and so did my hand issues , do i have to do carpal tunnel surgery ? i mean there are many times that i would wake up in the middle of the night with a cramp and numbness and tingling in my arm that would last for a good 10 minutes and the pain is so much to take but i always suck it up cuz i dont wanna wake up everybody else i will look more to it for sure but i would love your feedback on this one, thanks !

If you have other health issues, then inflammation is already an issue in your body. As someone who understand this, I can say things got noticeably better for me going low protein. Protein is inflammatory because it leads to excess acid in the body (and we all know acid burns). Hydrotherapy helps symptoms of carpal tunnel. Alternative heat and ice (I used ice water and very warm water in tall Mason jars) helps greatly.

Been playing for 2 years, suddenly my side palm and below thumb region muscles(Hypothenar muscles and Thenar muscle) started to get cramps and get swelled a bit, especially when i play scale and exercise. But otherwise when playing chords that doesn't happen at all, is this normal?

This is too long. The intro alone is over three minutes, then the next ten minutes should take two tops. I gave up when you said you were going to talk about some things we can do in ‘the next video.’ I see the next video in the side bar; it’s over seventeen minutes long, so no thank you. Your videos are usually pretty good, certainly they’re thorough, but you could, with minimal editing, reduce the over half hour of the two videos combined, down to ten minutes or less. You have one long shot, where you pressed record and did your thing, which is fine so long as you cut out the fat. There’s so much fat in this video, it dies of cardiovascular obstruction.

I have to add this: as long as you arent lacking magnesium, water, food or rest, then a cramp in your hand might actually send you a sign, that an RSI is on the rise. Especially if it occurs severaly times during a week or month. And before you know it, a major RSI has got its grip on your fun playing time. Please take this seriously, because that is how it began for me and when it really started, i had intense pain and a disability of using my hand as i wanted. First Cramps and stiffness in the hand while playing osu and now i am stuck with it and it is only slowly crawling out of my life. If you notice any crippling pain, STOP!!! Just for two weeks and then pick your instrument back up. If you do exercises for strenght, then wait 48 hours before doing them again. Better to be safe than sorry.

Bend your fingers like a claw if you keep them straight, you'll pull a tendon, my point is eg; if you don't bend your legs while lifting,what happens, back probs, and don't press on strings more than you need🤔and like he says do hand exercises before playing, hope that helps as this happened to me, now am okay by doing this,😃

Summary- If you have just started playing and you experience a pain then you probably don't have anything to worry about. You might have a bad technique."99/100 times its a normal pain" But if you experience tingling sensation and/or wrist pain which stays for long, thats a warning sign.
