I played call of duty religiously for years, 5 hours a day or way more. I have played drums and guitar off and on for years too. I really got serious about guitar at 18. I would practice three hours a day when I played. I overlooked these pains and pushed through. At 21 I lost my hands just like jay in this video. I can do all this stuff again. Took a year and a half till I could played again. I use compression gloves to do these hobbies now. When it hurts, I stop. I focus on wrist angle when playing guitar. I am terribly guilty of never stretching. I'm going to focus on this alot more. I appreciate your input. I'm 24 now. I pressure that anyone watching this video early on with their pain, DO NOT OVERLOOK IT MY FRIEND!

Before doing these stretches I'd recommend a general warm up, you don't ever want to stretch cold muscles and tendons, this comes from my years as a bodybuilder. Try walking briskly around the block for 10 minutes first, or jump on an exercise bike. I've actually injured myself in the past stretching cold. Thanks for this video, I'm currently suffering carpal tunnel after over using a shredneck, I shoulda know better 🤕

That’s great advice. Warm your hands up first before stretching your muscles, if you don’t you could do more damage!

Unnamed Player Body builders use science all the time lol. Anyways, I was going to add that if you don’t have time for a 10 minute run, you can always message and squeeze your forearms and hands to get blood flowing to them before stretching.

Very good information overall. The injuries that you are describing are basically repetitive/overuse syndromes and should not be taken lightly. BTW, those wrist supports are known as "cock-up" splints which are used to take pressure off of the median nerve that runs through the carpal tunnel. The exercises performed at the wrist are know as "flexion/extension" stretches which are used to stretch the flexor & extensor forearm muscles. Any initial swelling/edema & inflammation should be treated with the application of ice (10 to 15 min on & 1 hr off before reapplying). The ice should never be placed directly on the skin but wrapped in a moist towel first. An over the counter anti-inflammatory medication, such as Aleve, can be taken initially for a short period of time, usually no longer that a week or so. If anyone starts to experience symptoms, I would recommend that they cut back on the duration/time they play & begin doing exercises prior to beginning practicing again. As a retired chiropractor, I treated many of these overuse syndromes over 35+ years of practice. If treatment is instituted early enough, this type of injury should respond well to conservative measures. However, any chronic persistent pain should be evaluated with the appropriate testing procedures by a doctor trained in the field of orthopedic/neurologic medicine.

This is the best piece of guitar playing advice I’ve ever been given. Thank you. Watched all of part 1 and 2. Very important knowledge here. Also it’s inspiring to hear you bounced back from yours. 🙂 I would also add that guitar posture is also responsible for wrist and hand problems. Your body is all connected. Try not to lean over your guitar to “watch yourself” play. Keep your posture good and don’t slouch.

If you are older and have sports injuries this might happen much sooner. First hit me a year ago. Changed guitar to a smaller mustang. Now soreness in my lower arm and shoulder again. This time based on your suggestion, I'm going to a physio. Just listening to you and paying attention, I could feel significant tension in my lower arm - massaging this out has helped. One other thing I would add for those of us who are smaller and weaker is weights

Thank you for sharing this and including a player who has been coping and improving with help. I started playing at church regularly and developed bad habits over-squeezing when I played. After about 18 months I had pain and quivering in the left arm, as well as numbness. With therapy the pain and most of the numbness went away, but I think considering the possibility of carpal tunnel and these exercises should help. I am hoping over time the residual numbness in the index and middle fingers will go away. Guitar and music are my passion and I hope I don't need to give it up any time soon.

Suddenly my fretting arm is useless. I can’t even play the keyboard or my Ukulele or harmonica without pain. I’m going online right now to find a wrist brace. Never thought of musicians as athletes. Time for a change of habits and practice routines to include plenty of stretches and warm ups. I guess I need some balls too. I’ll be back to playing soon.

I’ve been having strumming hand problems where my strumming hand cramps up on a fast tempo/fast strumming song to the point where my hand just won’t work. I’ve had to just throw my pick and finish the song with my thumb (which, of course, dampens the sound). I don’t maintain a vise grip on my pick. Something is going on (maybe with my forearm muscles?). I’m going to see my hand specialist this week. I wish someone would specifically address strumming hand problems on YT. Thanks for this series, though. Very good info!

David, if you’ve been playing for a long time and that just started, there could possibly be a medical issue. However, if not it does take time and practice to develop stamina.

Great video and very valuable information. I haven't suffered any real hand pain yet, but have only been really learning to play for six months now. I've got some really nice calluses built up now and got through the fingertip pain without much trouble. I gave up dairy, and red meat pretty much so, with the exception of a little cheese maybe once a week and a small portion of farm-raised beef once every week or two. My hands that were sore all the time and inflamed joints went away in literally a month or so, and sinus problems cleared up in about a week's time. Thanks for sharing this information!

ive been playing for probably around 12 or so years. it wasn't until about maybe 3 or 4 years ago that I really started to progress past basic and general playing. My left wrist has been hurting so bad for MONTHS within the past year. Ive been so scared ill never be able to play guitar again because I didn't know what to do about my wrist, and felt like there was nothing I could do. I did think "I should go to the doctors", but I was afraid they wouldn't be able to do anything about it. im going go definitely make a doctors appointment asap! wouldn't be surprised if it was tendonitis. even typing this is hurting my wrist😩 this gives me hope!! thank you!!!

I had carpel tunnel syndrome and a ganglion cyst in my left wrist, it resulted in me having to give up playing for about a year and a half, the cause was as you said playing and practicing for hours every day plus poor posture when playing, I'm from the punk rock era of guitarists wearing the guitar slung down low, too low as it turned out and I had a habit of practicing while laying back in the couch or laying back in the bed, I played guitar almost all the time when I was relaxing, the problem is that playing with the wrist Bent way too much for 25 years cuts off the nerves to the fingers, I had to have an operation and as I said quit guitar and drums for 18 months before slowly working up to playing guitar again, I still haven't got back to drums but the guitar is almost to where I left off, its been 4yrs now since the operation

Good posture when practicing and playing is so important and I've found out the hard way that you play better when you pull the neck up closer rather than bending the wrist around to where the neck is, I always use jazz guitarist posture as an extreme example, not necessarily that high up but definitely not James Hetfield either a happy medium could prevent injury.

I have suffered from tendonitis in my left (fretting) hand and also have residual nerve pain in that wrist from a repetitive motion injury. I will be more diligent about stretching and I will definitely start wearing a immobilizing brace to bed. I know that I tuck my hands under my head when sleeping on my back or sides... it aggravates my shoulder too! I'm a mess! Thanks for sharing your experience and advice.

Thanks a ton, the therapy balls helped with my thumb pain immensely. I could never really get the palmy part of my thumb stretched or pressed enough to completely release its tension. Oddly, I didn't think they the balls would do that much but got them because I've heard about them over the years. Yea, I'm a believer now. It must cause some sort of micro motion when you rotate them that I wasn't able to get through stretching or pressing. Thumb feels much better and really helped with full dexterity a lot. Thanks all🙂

I had both wrists in braces due to severe pain from working. Took months to recover so when I took up guitar I wanted to be very careful so not to get that pain back and reinjure my wrists. Each time I picked up my guitar I was careful and made certain my position and posture was such that I had no excess or pressure to cause discomfort other than fingertip pain which proved to be my bane. But a bit of preplay stretching and no wrist pain provided I didn’t overdo it. Highly recommend correct posture and position of body, hands, arms. You’ll thank yourself later.

My elbow has been hurting badly lately. I found another video that demonstrated some massages, and your stretches at the beginning of this video. After doing both the pain in my elbow is completely gone. Completely. But it's moved into my forearm, bicep, and even my neck a little bit. These are more "normal" pains in terms of severity. What I have/had in my elbow is not normal at all. It feels like an injury. Strangely I've been playing over 30 years and haven't had a lot of pain until this past week. Just one other time I had wrist and elbow pain but it went away. That was a long time ago. Anyway this is my career and I have no other real skills so it's a bit concerning. I'm going to keep doing these massages and stretches, get a wrist brace and those ball things, and if this continues much longer I guess I'll go to the doctor. This sucks!

Guitar positioning, playing with the guitar at bellybutton is not the coolest look, but it's safe. Also wrist position and thumb position. Playing with lighter strings wont kill your tone. And pressing down on the fret engaging biceps and pectoral muscles will also help lessen tension on wrist and fingers muscles

What about high tension strings? They can be a problem too.

I had pain (feels like inflammation) in the back of my hand, and one thing that alleviates it is to point the thumb towards the head of the guitar. If I hold my thumb vertically like everyone says you should, I immediately feel some pain in the back of my hand. So I'll keep pointing my thumb to the headstock and disregard the advices as long as the pain remains and only start using the normal thumb position again once the pain is gone.

Hey guys, excellent episode. Did you mention links to the therapy tools you demo here? I'd appreciate it, I can Google myself but would rather have your recommendations. (Fully aware of disclaimer, you're rockstars not doctors lol)

@@crustynugget7398Do you have a link please? Pain in my strumming hand for the first time. Been playing on and off since I was a kid (about 15 years), just got serious again the past year. After practicing every day with NO pain (aside from normal fingertip pain while building calluses) for over a year, I took a few weeks off when I went on vacation. My first time playing I guess I went too hard, and now my right forearm/wrist area is very inflamed. I’m super discouraged and depressed because I finally got over the beginner’s “hump” if you will after having struggled with it for years. I got better technically but my arms and hands are too weak for the amount I want to practice I guess. 😔
