Just in case ........I have clothes for just in case I have to go to weddings, christenings , funerals, garden parties, cruises, trekking in Vietnam, luxury island trips, European winter weekend breaks, skiing, Singapore ball in Dubai, country walks in the Cotswolds, the list is endless . I have a fantasy wardrobe for a life I no longer lead when in reality I wear exercise gear all day and only go out to Aldi 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤪🤪 Need a reset in thinking !

Great video but I feel one big point was missed - my biggest mistake is buying clothes for “WHEN” I loss weight and I repeatedly do this - but the more I watch your videos the more aware I am becoming of my not so good habits - So thank you 💃💗

Instead of saving up for the higher-quality pieces I really want, I tend to fritter away my monthly clothes budget at high-street brands. Although I have strict standards for them, no synthetic fabrics, non-classic patterns/styles or plastic shoes, for example, they still have so many new, fun pieces that I can’t seem to resist.

Great video! As a former retail shopaholic, i now shop 90% on second hand shops and such, and this is where i tend to pick sometimes more trendy items. This is a great way to try a trend or generaly experimnt with your style and broadning your comfort-zone without breaking a budget. I'm wearing today a cool navy hoodie by Diadora, a trench coat and Isabel Marant white flame sneakers - ALL thrifted!!!

@@catnip4587 I learned quite early not to do this unless I really liked it before the sale, but it was too expensive. I've got some great items for less than half price by waiting until the sale came up. I also lost a few things because they were gone before the sale took place. My best quality items were bought in sales or found on e-bay a year later for greatly reduced prices, and never worn! This habit came from years of being on a tight budget but liking better quality clothes that were out of my price range. I have most of these things, even after more than 20 years, and still like them, because they were not really trend led but either classic or unusual. And I still love them and get compliments.

I agree with everything *except* the “just in case.” If you live a very casual lifestyle, it’s still important to have one simple elegant and versatile outfit -for example, the classic LBD- that you can pull out for the unexpected funeral, traffic court appearance (it can happen!), etc. If a loved one suddenly dies, you will *not* feel like shopping for something appropriate to wear! A change of accessories can make a simple black or navy dress suitable for almost anything.

I used to make all those mistakes.. especially holiday clothes purchases.. I didn't buy a single holiday item for 7 years or longer. If your body didn't change and you invested in classics - holiday clothes will last for many years... Great content. I love your videos 😍

Totally relate, I am so glad that store cards are not sold to us and especially young adults like they used to be. I used to work in a store and they were so pushy that we had to get as many people to open them and we’d have to ask people literally the moment they walked in to open an account. I’m glad you mentioned second hand shopping at the end, the impulse can be overwhelming as you know you can’t just pop back in or find it online and the price point often is too tempting to leave it behind.

Great video, Emma! I am trying to "grow up" when it comes about shopping. I have to confess: I am (or was) addicted to bags. Finally I found my perfect one: Cassie from Coach and I will sell other bags. And I heard a good advice : if you want to clean your wardrobe and you don't know what to do with, let's say, a dress, ask yourself: would I buy it again? If not - sell it/give it away. And one more from me: stop buying cheap jewelry in HM etc. It will not last too long. It's better to buy some gold-plated or silver accessories :)

I feel like the modern version of store cards would be things like Afterpay, ZipPay, etc. I really, really worry about those services - they encourage impulse purchases that people can’t afford in the first place. Then, if a payment is missed, the interest gets added on. All leading to more and more debt.

I was just thinking that! There's a reason I don't have a credit card. I know I'd be terrible with a credit card and an Afterpay account

@at2425__ 3 жыл бұрын
Yes but in my opinion it's the same as owning a credit card. There is a limit as well on how much you can dip into your credit (I believe the cap is 2000 pounds). People need to take responsibility and learn how to manage their finances.

But more than that we need to understand that NOBODY MAKES Us buy things, we need to take accountability of our actions. Don’t have the money, don’t buy it. Don’t need that dress? Don’t buy it! Don’t have money now? Then get off Zara’s website! Or don’t go to the stores. I do this and have saved tons of money. You wanna buy something? Buy yourself undies, bras, slips, etc more frequently!

The mega intensity of marketing and advertising is underestimated. If we were all so good at personal responsibility, we'd all be skinny, too. Yes, we need to be grown ups, but there's a reason there's been so much legislation around telcos and store credit. People aren't perfect and marketing is cruel. Thank god for charity shops or I'd be in strife 🤦‍♀️

I love shopping secondhand and you're 100% right - You shop secondhand for the wonderful feeling of finding a treasure, but those treasures are rarely on your "list". I think of it more as a hobby - like art collecting. When you shop secondhand you can find those statement pieces at a reasonable price and great quality. I will buy staples new (if I can't find what I want in a secondhand version), but everything else is secondhand. You should do a video on your favorite secondhand pieces you've found!

The holiday buying is especially important!! No offense but the average Brit gets 2-3 weeks of sunshine holidays a year. You don’t need a whole suitcase of holiday clothes, especially if you’re spending half of it in a swimming suit anyway 😂😑

I absolutely needed to see this video in order to prepare for my 2022 resolutions! I am a sucker for a designer sale...not anymore! Watching you meticulously crafting your wish list and only buying items which you actually use has changed my perception! I'd much rather have the one pair of Gucci loafers that I'll wear hundreds, if not thousands of times, verses the pile of crap that takes up space and barely, if ever gets worn! Thank you Emma! 🧡👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Awww bumble is so cute. My dog does this when the vacuum comes out. The ‘but it was on sale’ is the hardest habit to kick and online shopping because it will always look great on the model. I think that as you grow and lose valuable wardrobe space you do start to be more conscious about your spending habits. For me if it’s an item on sale or any item really I ask myself 1. Does this look amazing on me? 2. Will I realistically wear this in the next month? If those are no then it is not for me

With second hand purchases it's even more probable you'll get into impulse buying - because it's that single piece you won't get anywhere anymore! And it's there in your hands! You need to get it before it's too late xD Been there - done that xD

All good advice. For the last three years or so I have been working on creating a more thoughtful, less wasteful and cluttered wardrobe. Today I almost bought something then changed my mind. It was on sale for a low price, it had a cute pattern, and would have been useful and probably worn a lot in the summer as something comfy around the house and also as pajama bottoms with a t-shirt. The problem was the item was "one size fits all" and I knew it would be way to volumous on me and make me look bigger than I am. By "item" I mean elastic waist culottes, I know, how could I even consider purchasing that monstrosity? In the past I would have told myself it will be useful and it doesn't matter how it looks if it's just for wearing at home. Now I ask myself how many items that serve the same purpose do I really need, especially when the loungewear I already own is more flattering, and makes me feel better about myself then that thing would. So, there is another category of clothes not to buy: dumpy loungewear, even if it's on sale! No one needs that cluttering up their closet.

Before, i had a closet so "not large enough" that i didn't see what I had. Thanks to my now walk-in, i was able to see and assess what I have and make better choices when i shop. BUT thanks mostly to videos such as yours today for guiding me away from bad temptations and onto the right path to make the most of my budget. :-)

A “just in case” I think is important is for a funeral. No one wants to be in a bind during those times and I think “just in case” for that is justifiable and ok.

A tip if you really want a 'trend' item is to check ebay or charity shops as you'll often find something similar if not the same thing. You'll save money, prevent clothes going to landfill. Then invest in true quality staple pieces that will outlast trends.

😂Guilty on all counts but especially impulse/just-in-case buying WHILE thrifting! You’re right, wasted money in any amount is still wasted money. My new rules for shopping are: ignore the sale items until I’ve checked out the nicer, higher priced ones; and limit myself to one thing, from my wish list, I love and can see myself wearing a lot. Good to see you again!🌸

Wise words Emma😊. When I was a lot younger I had store cards with everyone because like you said It was all too easy, as I’ve got older I don’t follow trends, I wear what I like and what suits me and my lifestyle. I only buy what I can afford however I have used Klarna in the past, I find it useful sometimes to buy then try without waiting for returns to hit my account, obviously I get that this isn’t for everyone. Enjoy the first day of life hopefully returning to some normality!

Honestly, shopping for clothes I don't need is my vice. The justifications I make are endless 'it's a bargain' 'it will go with so many thing's' 'I should have this for work' 'I need it as don't have enough tops... Jeans.... Jackets... Blazers..' 'I can wear this on date night'. Trouble is, we don't have a lot of space so I have clothes everywhere! I forget what I have because I tend to go for the same comfy items, I hardly go anywhere lol. I have started selling my clothes as most are brand new and I'm starting to make quite a bit, also it satisfies that high I get from a new purchase. I still struggle though as YT hauls are quite addictive to watch

The other one you should mention is there are so many influencers out there..... the trouble is, it always looks so good and a great idea at the time but, we don’t all have the same figures or height and in fact the money that influencer can earn to pay for it. So don’t be influenced by influencers unless it’s something you really really need and have been looking for or can afford. All vey good advice Emma. Lovely to see you again.

I love this! When I'm itching to buy something, I go to youtube and watch videos like this. hahaha and revisit why do I want to buy those things. One of the positive things of social media, on the other hand, when I see posts of luxury handbags and such, it triggers that want to buy... I guess you just have to choose well - how social media will affect you. I also limited the "Because it's on sale," especially now because it seems like every month, there's a sale!

Shopping the sales for things you would not pay full price for is actually super smart - if you know in advance what you are looking for and then am able to buy higher quality on sale compared to cheaper quality during the year. So I shop sales and offers, bit only for things that are pre-decided on and identified as missing in my wardrobe. 😃

Thank you for sharing your tips, totally agree! What I do to avoid impulse / sale / just-in-case purchases, is that I give myself a grace period. I put stuff in the shopping cart or wishlist on a particular retailer. I wait for a week or two. If I still think about them, and if they have easy return policies, I will buy! Although 80% of the time I forget and never think about them ever again!

Guess there is an exception to any rule, as sometimes Impulse buys blend so well in a thought through and on a safe side wardrobes, got an orange skirt like that and its amazing how much use I got from it, although was never a plan to get anything in bright colours. Some sale buys can be so lucky sometimes, like I wanted two new puffers for a season, but could only afford one at that time, so when sales arrived I didn't have puffer on a list, but just couldn't resist, cause I know that next year I will get lots of wear out of it. Biggest rule for me is not to buy cheap clothes, like never, cause I know that after one wash I wont wear them ever again, so I never go inside Primark or Zara at all.

I'm guilty of all these😑 another big reason for my shopping habits was that I justified my purchases with the fact that I was able to buy something I liked, just because I (finally) could... I just started working and receiving a decent amount of income, and growing up with not that much money, it made me feel like I could finally do what I wanted when growing up.

I rarely buy anything that is used fashion in one season. I also like comfort and it doesn't matter if it's wet or not. I love Birken sandals, I always wear them and I will continue to wear. Interesting vid 👍 What I would say though is that if you find a dream dress in tk maxx or somewhere thats your colour, fits you like a glove and would be perfect to wear to a wedding, it’s worth buying as it can be very hard to find glam dresses that flatter on demand. Perfect things often pop up when your not really invested in looking and then if you specifically go out hunting you just can’t seem find what you need!! I bought a thick fur trim vintage winter coat that I stumbled across in a charity shop once in mid summer, it was one of the hottest days of the year but I’ve ended up wearing it for countless winters since. It’s one of the most stunning pieces 🤍 If I’d left it behind and waited for Autumn to get a new winter coat I’d have missed out on one of my happiest purchases 🤗

Definitely needed to hear this. I just returned an entire online order yesterday of things I spent way too much time looking through every single page of the “sale” items of things I didn’t entirely need. That combined with driving over to the store and waiting in line to return make me cringe of all the precious time I could have spent doing something else 🙄😅 Not to mention the deflation of things not looking the way you pictured they would 😩

Thanks Emma, a very useful video this morning! My greatest downfall as a life-long enthusiastic clothes shopper (after all the ones you mention) is buying something ‘to slim into’! I thought I’d got the better of it after losing three and a half stone (and getting back to a size 12!) but unfortunately lockdown has resulted in a stone finding it’s way back to me again 😮 and I’m fighting hard not to keep buying summer updates until I’ve lost it 🤞🏻! I’m going to keep your wise words in mind from now on. Although I think I’m going to have to keep the Massimo Dutti blazer in toffee - just can’t bear to send that back 😉! I, too, was an active member of the store card generation in the early 2000s. My parents dug me out of debt in my mid-20s (I worked part-time to pay off a third of the Victoria’s Secret, Old Navy/Gap, and whatever else card my teenage self was suckered into) and, well into my thirties, I never forgot the shock of having over a thousand dollars owed to a STORE.

I've set myself a monthly sum I'm allowed to use on clothes and because I only buy items once a month now I plan and think about what I need (rather than want) to add to my closet. Doing this the past few months has made me realise how much money I've saved! Before I'd impulse purchase throughout the month. No wonder I was broke and never truly satisfied with the items!

I relate so much with the “just in case purchases”. I bought something for a wedding that I’m just picturing in my head. Hahaha. It was so good though and also bought it secondhand so I justified the purchase with the latter. Hahahaha. I haven’t used it still because of the pandemic and there’s no wedding in my family or friends. But still, secondhand, you know what I mean? Hahahahaha! By the way, these are great tips and really easy to follow but human desire is just.... 😩

I now work for a major thrifting company with retail outlets and business is booming. I just "donated" a lot of clothing and shoes that were "great deals", too good to pass up....impulse...you name it. Nothing was of enough value to sell on the second hand market myself but in bulk it was a huge visual of wasted money. I went from wearing a business look with sheath dresses and smart suits (I kept the preloved Armani suits just because) to tee shirts and men's tactical pants because I'm supervising a warehouse full of workers.

Oh yes...been there done that. Now it changed a lot thank goodness😁 i can easily use 85% of my wardrobe all year round and that remaining 15% is summer dresses and shorts. It seems like a one season wonder, but flower dresses or one colour dresses come out every summer. I keep the amount low, so I don't feel guilty not using those for majority of the year. I am guilty of one just in case purchase which is a "imighthaveaweddingtogoto" 😑 I'll give myself a tiny pat on the back for not owning a credit card and not buying by trends. Thanks for a lovely video✌

I am a huge fan of sale purchases, but not the ones „oh, it was on sale” but the well thought ones. I do have a list of things I miss in my closet and I try to buy them on sale, but I do get basics/classic pieces, it saves money and also makes me plan my purchases more😁

My weakness is buying multiple colorways when I find clothes I like. But I guess I wear them and I don't wear out clothes as quickly so 🤷

Oh I do the same, when I find something I like I will get a couple of colours. But then they get lots of wear and use as I know I like them and the fit etc. 👍

My first point of call when buying clothes is the sale because that's usually all I can afford (or feel comfortable paying). I still have t-shirts and dresses that I bought in 2014 (that I still wear)! I need to update seriously. Great video as always, thanks 😊

True true true.. I had to set monthly limit for me in CZK for buying clothes and I buy it as reward if I finish my monthly workout plan:). And the best I learned this year was that woolen clothes and polyesters clothes are such a different

Emma, I’ve recently bought my first sort of designer bag. Not designer like Chanel or Gucci but still. I mean... le Chiquito by Jacquemus! Really, this is my first ever designer bag! Obviously, I’ve had such classics as Neverfull or Prada’s backpack on my list but I didn’t want to wait no more and I fell in love in this little bag 😍 It may seem ridiculous since Chiquito is considered as a typical trendy bag but for me it IS classic - a simple shape, versatility, plain color (white), without any additional structure in form of diamonds, jets, sequins... but what about size? We don’t always require big practical bags :) I don’t regret my choice at all and I can assume that my bag will stay with me even if it’s not fashionable anymore.

Personally, I've loved a lot of the trends over the last couple of years or so. Many of which I wanted even before they were a trend, but could never find. So, I have bought into quite a few of them. Luckily, I know they're my style, so I will absolutely weer over and over again. The trick is to not buy into absolutely every trend, just the ones that fit into your style or if you want to experiment with one particular trend.

I think a lot of people fall into the trap of calling something they've bought "An investment purchase", breaking it down cost-per-wear to justify a big spend. Just because something is a 'classic' or 'wardrobe staple' I think it can be easy to kid yourself into feeling better about spending a large sum of money on one item.... especially when you already have several other very similar items already that would already serve that purpose. I think the best way to address shopping mistakes is to have a self-imposed "No buy" month/two month or more shopping hiatus. That helps to be more mindful of using what you already own and what you really wear.

Thanks for the great video topic. Couldn’t agree more with the need to stop these bad shopping habits. There was a time where I hit all 5 of them simultaneously, but I am more intentional about the things I buy, and making a list of what I need and also being more sustainable in my purchases. Bumble is too cute, wish my 🐶 would be as cooperative.

Such great advice Emma thank you! Being mindful of how I shop (now!) means I have managed to develop a wardrobe of things I actually like and that fit and suit me 👍 and now I have far fewer ‘bad purchases’ to sell or donate to charity shops. This was a great video and super helpful 🙏❤️❤️❤️

Thanks, Emma. Guilty on every count! I find that with handbags, it’s useful to buy a cheap duplicate & see how much you use it. By the end of say, 1month, you’ll know if it works for your body shape, the rest of your style & your lifestyle & whether to purchase or not.

A habit I need to break is bingeing haul videos to justify my purchases from a certain brand. Idk why I'd ever think that the haul that influenced me to buy something i didn't need would justify my impulse purchases.

The pandemic did indeed stay for a much longer time than we expected... I bought a pair of SL Zoe pumps a couple of months back for an upcoming wedding in the summer and I got informed that the couple will postpone it for next year because of the situation. I almost never wear high heels and I bought them especially for this occasion. Now they are just dusting themselves... And so many more not needed purchases for just the "just in case" concept... All so well said Emma! Greetings from Greece!

Bumble was the star 😆 Another pointer to go along with the sale shopping thing: would you still like the item if it wasn't designer, like if it was from H&M or whatever. Glad you added that bit at the end about second hand. I've bought a few things on ebay now and I use the excuse that it's 2nd hand... but if it doesn't work and you have to sell it for half the price you bought it for, not great.

Making purchasing difficult could help. I removed every store app on my cellphone, and my credit card information. Having to do those extra steps instead of just clicking the checkout button really helps. It's making those impulse purchases less accessible.

I fell into store card debt! Don't do it ladies! Of all the things I bought on cards the only thing I have left is a red wool Monsoon poncho, which I never wear but keep as a reminder of how foolish I was!! Kind regards Georgina.

So... I admit I used to have some poor shopping habits. The sales were my vice.. I used to buy a lot of cheap items to make me feel great to have many options. Butboh boy.. Those pieces were garbage. The only thing I always invested were on blazers. Untill I came across your chanel I thought I was the only person on earth to own that amount of blazers.. And shoes. Thing is I fou d out I had pieces with the tag for years.. In 2019 I decided not to shop for a year to find out if I would wear my closet.. I only wore 10%..so in 2020 with the pandemic I made a huge clear out... And didn't buy much.. Not regreted... I want to shop smart... Great video Emma.. Thank you!

Reselling is so satisfying! I love knowing something I loved is going to a new home. I have a rule-when one thing comes in, one must go out. Also, that sale part 🤦🏼‍♀️ Manolo Hangisi. Bought on sale because they were Hangisis! Never on sale. I seemed to have forgotten that I can’t stand the shoe. They look like pilgrim shoes with big buckles. Plus, I’m more sneakers and jeans. 🤷‍♀️ I need to sell them but ah, they’ve never been worn. Aargh!!

Yes store credit cards still exist. My rule is everyone takes VISA and MASTERCARD.Plus can I pay for the item in one payment. Is it necessary to buy this? If it’s not, go home think it over them if I still want it. Budget it in.

Brilliant video Emma. 💯 Agree with you. I'm really good with money and savings etc, (I'm the person who got a House of Fraser store card to buy a winter coat at 25% off, then paid the card off in one payment and cut up the card! 😂) but I've been guilty of most of these in the past. I've donated clothes to charity shops with the sale/reduced tag still on. 🙈😂💕
