Everyone thought vinyl was on the way out in the late 1980s/early 90s. CDs had supposedly made both vinyl and cassettes obsolete. Loads of people cheaply sold, gave away or dumped their records- and later regretted it. The 'elites' may prefer us to own nothing and be happy and just have an 'app' or 'files' on a phone or computer- but I'm very happy with my physical collection thanks and I would like to promote owning a physical music collection, be it CDs, vinyl or cassettes, to younger generations.

Great vid John, but I completely disagree. Sure, I'm bias being an avid CD collector however, vinyl sales have dropped significantly between 25-30% mainly due to rising prices of vinyl. Many current vinyl collectors, not all of course are now collecting CD's being that they are more affordable. On the flipside, CD sales have risen double digits. Record stores are receiving a huge amount of used late title vinyl from younger vinyl collectors that can't keep up with the rising prices. From everything I am hearing and seeing, there is a bit of a resurgence of CD's while the vinyl bubble seems to be deflating. Just my opinion of course. Lovin your channel man!

The CDs then get ripped to LAME MP3 in VBR at -V2 (indistinguishable from CD to 99% of listeners in double blind listening tests) and stored away carefully in a CD-friendly environment. All of the CDs I bought back in 1985 still play back flawlessly and rip error-free, so I don't think disc rot is a major problem if you store your CDs correctly.

I am fortunate to have an independent record store nearby. They still have and sell more CDs than vinyl and also sell out of more new releases on CD than vinyl. However, I have gone to many music stores outside of the area and often they will onIy sell vinyl or have few CDs. I go to a lot of concerts and yes, it seems you see more t-shirts and koozies these days. For up and coming artists, you will see a fairly equal amount of vinyl and CDs and it seems with more established ones, you may see just the latest album. As for CDs players in vehicles, I have a new vehicle on order and I was given a choice of options. The salesman said, "We can put in anything you want". I said, "Can you put in a CD player?" Nope, they couldn't accomodate me. I couldn't get anything I wanted! Cheers!

From all of that I usually create mixes of my favorite songs from my most recent acquisitions. Smartwatches aren't going to to replace watches or make them redundant, neither are valve amps or digital amps are going to replace integrated amps and a resurrected old music technology, with a needle reading a groove, that became a big trend again and became a new way the customers could get ripped off by the music industry, isn't going to kill the detailed and lossless .wav file on a cd ROM. Not when it has such a following, provides so much resilience and convenience AND has a massive electronics industry that supports it in providing sound quality that cannot be matched. But I guess we will see what happens when the youth gets sick of being ripped off abandons the vinyl trend. Digital and streaming will be king and there may be a cd resurgence, since it is superior to the vinyl format, as a physical medium, in every way, except having big album covers on a bit of cardboard.

They have a pair of AR 3 speakers in the Smithsonian. The first popular acoustic suspension speaker. That does not mesn speakers are going out of style. AR, the brand, I haven't seen in a while. The last time I seen anything AR, was their interconnects at Best Buy. For a while Best Buy looked like they couldn't decide whether to carry Monster Cable or AR cables. Cds sound better than streaming, we are told by many high end audio reviewers, which if they tell us right, cds sound better than even high end streamers. Cds are cleaner sounding than vinyl on very good cd playback equipment, which makes cd the best, or one of the two best formats we have. I do not see tons of people buying a turntable to pay $30 to $40+ for new vinyl. Just as most people do not have high end stereos because of cost, the majority are never going to opt for the more expensive proposition of buying music. A format that has very inconsistent pressings compared to cd. Analog does have a noticeably more natural sound, but the showier sound presentation of cd is good also, and I would guess more impressive to most. People galore believe that lps have better sound because they are told so by people like Michael Fremer. He published his own magazine for a while called The Tracking Angle. An all all analog magazine in the middle of cds most popular years. It apparently didn't do all that well. Michael Fremer in print, said years ago, that the Mobile Fiidelity Abraxas by Santana lp was absolutely the best sound quality of any recording he ever heard. Later it was revealed that particular lp was recorded from a digital copy of the analog tape. Cds are just more practical than vinyl, even beyond just cost and convenience. They have so many advantages. They have cd sets with 5 cd titles in one set for $20 or so. Buying 5 new lps, most with digital mastering could cost $200 or more. Actually it's a no brainer. If cds do ever go extinct, it won't be because of vinyl, it will be because physical formats have become obsolete.

It's the black t-shirt brigade, guys like you of a certain age, that will ensure the resurgence of CDs. Your desperation to regain your former "muso status" from back in the day is fast becoming a turn off - and once people start seeing vinyl as uncool again, then it's all over. There's millions of people out here in the real world who love music first, the format second. Do you really seriously think that such a successful format as the CD is going to disappear off the face of the earth - no of course it wont't! In fact it has all the makings of becoming THE most collectable format in years to come. Sales of CDs are rising, prices are rising - you need to study eBay and Discogs more carefully. Once you get away from the mass market stuff, CDs have retained their value very well. PS: I have about 4000 CDs - Jazz, World Music, Latin, Classical, Opera, Soul, Indian music, African, Greek... and I'm still collecting with a passion. The great thing is that 99.9% of the CDs I buy are absolutely free of DEFECTS!

But the sound is often not as good apart from some exceptions ofcourse. This is a generalization but technically it is also a fact to some degree. New vinyl recordings is no use. I would only praise those analog recordings. The rest is just a digital recording transfered to vinyl, which sounds worse. King Diamond made it differently with the latest releases of the albums where they transfered the analog recordings on to the new vinyl. These are perhaps worth getting.
