Facial expressions, body language and tone during interviews are tell tale signs of toxic management. They're usually stern, strict, critical and judgmental.

You mention reading the negative reviews on Glassdoor. But a sign of a truly toxic work environment is when you see a whole bunch of glowing 5-star reviews of the company all posted within a short time frame and all with similar sounding language. This indicates that management at the company has directed employees to "bomb" the website with positive reviews in order to counteract the negative ones and drive up the overall Glassdoor rating of the company. This practice, even more than the negative reviews themselves, should be a huge red flag that the company is toxic.

Two huge red flags that I totally overlooked during my interview process with a toxic narcissistic boss was “love bombing” and “future-faking”. Many things were promised but never delivered, and many things were done unethically and illegally. There were fake 5 star reviews on the company’s Google page that were fabricated by his employees. Turnover was very high and I wish I had seen the bad reviews on Glassdoor of those who had left. The boss and some of his “flying monkey” employees were extremely toxic and used verbal abuse, intimidation, rage tantrums and threats to get their way. The emotionally healthy ones were left burnt out and depressed. I too constantly broke down and had panic attacks almost on a daily basis. When an employer is too keen on you and places you on a pedestal initially, it’ll be just as easy to fall off the idealization wagon. Those who left or were fired were devalued badly by that employer.

One sign I did miss in a previous job interview was how they spoke about people who previously held the role. When I asked about traits that successful people had in the role, I got a few traits followed by complaints about previous employees. I now know that to be a huge red flag. I'm sure it's me now they're talking about. I agree with the rest of your comments. Glassdoor can be a reliable source of information if you know how to read the patterns. Are they selling you the role? Yup. Didn't do that either.

I turned down an outreach from a corporate recruiter because a lot of glassdoor reviews say the company is "bro culture." I also looked at their former employees' LinkedIn profiles carefully. I noticed some of them left the company within a year of joining.

The bonus tip definitely hit home. I'm in a situation where I'm evaluating another company and the way they describe themselves is really triggering for me because these were the lies that were fed to me in a toxic work environment I've experienced. I'm now very skeptical to these descriptions such as "we're a family."

Are there any healthy companies? The workplace is people so every company is toxic, full of rivality, gossips and HR that doesn't care. It is better to know how to survive in such environment and be albe to keep this job to pay the bills. The less scrupules and vulnerability you have the better for you.

I’m late to the party but yes.. this is a great question. Frankly I believe every company has some form of “toxicity” due to the simple fact that 3/10 people have psychopathic traits…. So if 1/3 of the human population has psychopathic traits they’re likely to end up in the work place.

Glassdoor is useful, I guess, but should be taken with a grain of salt. Companies definitely doctor their results. If you see a spat of bad reviews followed by a run of good ones, I generally look at how those good ones are worded. Do they sound like HR drivel? If you see a bunch of bad reviews that mention the same things over and over, that's usually a good sign that there's a big problem.

A red flag for me that I encountered today is having a bunch of interviews with people across departments that includes senior leadership from multiple departments when the position is low level. I’m interviewing for an low paying entry-level position. It’s giving micromanaging. And they said the role is hybrid in the job description and during the interview they said I may have to work 5 days per week, that I have to have a flexible schedule for the business. I’m going to turn down the role before those interviews with senior leadership because heck nah.

I got pissed off in an interview that a boss says, "It's useless to hire you". I'm not open in working a particular place. I'm surprised by the boss answer and definitely won't reach out to them anytime soon. And I felt some unrealistic expectations from them.

Just quit a job that I felt was gaslighting me. Sorry no I was sure they were because they kept "not" (they totally were) calling me a liar to things I had physical evidence and witnesses to. I took your first advice after quiting and on glass door it had a 2.0 rating and a lot of people where complaining of the same things. Actually i still have one day more to go with them but....I'm really rethinking the value of treating them with more respect than they've shown me for the total of months I've had this management on my back. I know I don't have a long record of jobs I've stayed at past 2 years, but I'm even surprised I stayed 5 months. I feel like I should have quit 3 months ago!.

I've noticed this. I think it's more like it's the mindset of the employees. I've noticed that on prospective employee tours, I would be more serious and wasn't as jovial as normal. But, when you're the prospective employee, you pick up on this. Like, "Why does everyone seem like they are in prison."🧐 Truth is somewhere in between.

Another sign of a bad employer is if they're not prepared for the interview(s). For example - someone important, critical, vital is not present at the interview to assess what kind of employee you are (good or bad), but their type of managerialism or "leadership" will ultimately affect & shape your position/outcome at the company. Or if they are not prepared for you on your first day of work and ask you to come back the next day. Or if the on-boarding process is riddled with mistakes and it takes you a day or two to simply onboard. Or if you're a minority, and you only see another minority in the lobby of the office your first day at work but never afterwards. It's almost as if the powers-that-be specifically asked a minority to come in that day to showcase they do in fact hire minorities (but in actuality they don't). What if a superior deliberately mispronounces your name on the first day? And you have a simple name, like Eric. You clarify the pronunciation, but they still mispronounce your name.
