I have to say I have been bringing my son to OT for 6 years now and the work has always been focused on the problem not necessarily the root of the problem. I just learned about retained primitive reflexes and was so surprised to hear about how much impact it had on daily living/learning. Is this a newer discovery? I reached out to our OT to see if she was familiar with the evaluation process and was so excited to learn that she had taken a training on primitive reflexes and that she will assess for them at our next session. I am hopeful this will now become a part of his treatment plan and we start seeing progress in some of the areas where he may show retention. This seems like something that would be relatively easy for school systems to have as a standard part of their cirriculum for the younger kiddos which could help them tremendously when it comes to children who currently have retentions that can eventually cause larger delays in the future educationally. I am so thankful that I stumbled upon this!

I have been told my child has low muscle tone and platfus so this is the reason for poor coordination. Adhd as diagnose. I found YOU and now MY SKY IS CLEAR after 6 years of questions night by night. So sorry my country does not have specialists like you 2. Have a Great Year ! Thanks and keep up the good work.

I’m a adult woman, a senior actually, who was “diagnosed” with retained Moro reflex, by an OT assistant, a few years ago. I did not crawl as an infant, and have had an exaggerated startle response my entire life. I deal with anxiety and a sense of fight or flight. Is there OT that may help me at this stage in my life? Thank you… Constance

Definitely do some searching in your area to see if there's a trained therapist in your area who can help you! Maybe the OTA can help or recommend someone? It's never too late to integrate primitive reflexes!

Hi, I have been doing sensory excercises (for primitive reflexes) with my 7 yearold for 9 weeks now AND IT IS A MIRACLE! I do the SARLOS-STEPHEN PROGRAM (hungarian lady). My boy is a complet different person!!! I have become OBSESSED with this primitive reflexes therapy! So now I am looking for a OT office where I could volunteer! I live in Richmond Virginia. Could you please advise me how and where to start looking? I would love to help other kuds and parents too! Thank you so much!

Thank-you soo..much for sharing this wealth of information. My grandson is 6 & we've been aware of his retained reflexes for the past 2 years or so & he's been in ot since. Can you share how his mom & dad should speak to him about this. I NEVER want him to feel negatively about himself! He is AMAZING in EVERY way (for example,he is phenomenal # sports)but there is no doubt he is being impacted by these retained reflexes. So, can you share some tools concerning how to explain this to him. Thank- you for ALLcthe good work you are doing👏👏

Great questions! You can tell him that there are exercises he can do to help his brain and body work together to help him feel more coordinated, run faster, etc.

Is it normal to keep the Moro reflex into adulthood? I wasn't diagnosed til my 40s, and I just thought I was "high strung".. I've retained almost ALL of these primitive reflexes.. Are neck based tics common?
@HarklaFamily
@HarklaFamily 3 ай бұрын
We wouldn't say it's "normal," since primitive reflexes are designed to integrate .. but we do know that it's 'common' for the to stick around if there's trauma or other underlying challenges. Primitive reflexes can be integrated in adulthood!! The brain can always change =)

I just saw this and it is so helpful. What about a 3 year old who has a hard time keeping his hands to himself. Often pushing, pulling, and getting in others space or sitting on top of other children. Would this be a possible cause?
@HarklaFamily
@HarklaFamily Жыл бұрын
So glad it was helpful! We don't formally test for retained primitive reflexes until a child reaches 5 years old and up. At 3 years old, we would focus more on developmental movement patterns (climbing, running, jumping, etc.). As for pushing, pulling, and getting into other's space -- this sounds more like a sensory seeking child! He's seeking out tactile and proprioceptive input! Definitely check out our resources on these two sensory systems for ideas!

My 5yo grandson lives with us and just got an assessment that indicates he has all 8 retained reflexes. We are on a fixed income and can not monetarily afford therapy but for his sake we can not afford to let it go. Is there some kind of resource that could walk me through the necessary steps to help him integrate these reflexes?

Hi this is great info. My daughter was born at 23 weeks and seems to have retained many reflexes. Are preemies more likely to retain reflexes? She's had many assessments; doctors have said she's on the cusp of cerebral palsy and autism but they have not given her any diagnoses. I think this may be what's going on. Thanks

Hello, why would a 4 year old when they crawl use one leg appropriately and the other not. It’s like they drag it not really use it. But he can walk, climb, go up and down stairs. But doesn’t use it when crawling, also seem to not be aware that he can use both hands coordinated together. He will use one hand to pull or push, even when object is heavy but if you tell him to use both hands he will just doesn’t seem to in any scenario use both hands together without being prompt to do so. Is this a retained reflex? Child is very smart but has coordination issues.

Hi! Great question! It sounds like there is some neglect on one side of his body. Potentially there is a misfire between the 2 hemispheres of his brain, which is creating difficulty using both sides of his body efficiently. This would definitely be something to bring up to the child's pediatrician and ask for either a PT or an OT referral!
