Doing a deep dive into the ISFJ/IST-F cognitive type!
In CPT fashion this video discards the dichotomies (i.e. I-S-F-J) and focuses on the underlying cognition of this highly misrepresented type, as well as the unexplored intellectual and abstract side of their psyche.

About me:
Hi, I'm Harry, and I'm intensely passionate about personality typing and self-development - so much so that I have created my own Jung-inspired system, taking a more high-resolution look at the factors making up personality.
Through Cognitive Personality Theory I examine the underlying mechanisms behind cognition, and the means through which a single type can have limitless individual variation - I believe type itself is just a set of cognitive predispositions that can according to the needs of the situation be overcome.
I don't believe any type is limited in what they can achieve, but have noticed sensationalist attitudes and internet trends propagating a culture in which type-development is actively discouraged in favour of conforming to simplistic archetypes. Through CPT I hope to dispel various myths and oversimplifications of what constitutes personality type, and along the way encourage a healthier attitude towards type that allows a person to become not who they are told they are, but rather who they want to be.

This video helped me a lot since I am an ISFJ, especially point 2 about losing myself in my sensory world that I create in my head. Back in the third grade, I was obsessed with reading the Warrior cats series and would lose myself in those books, blocking out the outside world. I would miss the loud recess bell so often because I simply didn't notice it and the fact that the other kids were going outside. A classmate told me that when I'm reading I wouldn't hear a bomb go off. At the time, I figured that the reason other kids noticed the recess bell as that they weren't as engrossed in their books as I was. Now, watching this video helped me understand why.

Have you ever read Stephen King's book about the writer getting lost in the world in his own head? I can't remember the name of it, but I should probably go find it and read it several more times. It was so spot on with the way I felt when I was reading or writing, and, occasional other times. What this lovely man said about feeling like being on a ship is also pretty spot on for the way I feel, at times. And, I get to going pretty fast on the sea of time, to the point where I have done an unreasonable amount of work, reading, etc. for the amount of time that has gone by.

Thank you so much for taking the time to cover my type in such depth, I often struggle to find good-quality, detailed resources that truly reflect how my mind works, as an ISFJ. For about 5-6 years, I believed that I was an INFJ, purely due to finding stereotypes and the vague descriptions I came across online relatable. Realising that I am actually an ISFJ felt like a bit of a punch in the gut, my mind couldn’t help but see it as a downgrade from the apparently more interesting, intelligent and rare INFJ type. I suddenly had much less content to enjoy about my type and a subtle but strange prejudice from some xNxx types in the community. I realise now that I had taken my type too close to heart; it is merely one of many models that approximates my thought process. Nonetheless, it‘s pleasant to feel understood, even just a little. ❤️

I get what you mean. INFJ is such an idealized type that it's hard to not want to be it. 😆 I only considered being it for a few weeks before ISFJ or my initial diagnosis of INFP began to make more sense to me, but I realized that I'd been trying pretty hard to convince myself I was an INFJ. Even though I don't relate that much to Ni (at least nowhere near as much as I relate to Si), I was really trying to come up with reasons for being an Ni dom. 😂

Don't worry there's not really that much more content for INFJs, since most of that is also based on untrue stereotypes or mistypings which talk actually about some other type.

I have been confused about whether I'm an INTP or an Si dominant ISFJ for the longest time. My Si is fairly strong. Seeing this video, it didn't resonate with me as well as one of your video about strengths of an INTP, but i did relate somewhat to this video as well. Especially the part about the Fe-Ne and feeling the "vibe". It's almost as if I've somehow blurred the line between the two. I'd have to say that i lose track of my surroundings very often, i tend to take an overview of my surroundings and overlook so much detail visually. I think I'm an INTP for the time being. Hopefully we can get an ISFJ vs INTP video? That would be interesting to see. But i feel like theres something that doesn't fit right, but i still can't be an ISFJ.

I've thought I'm an INFP for nearly a decade now, but I've been very much questioning this lately as I've become familiar with cognitive functions and discarded the 16 Personalities misinformation. What's really made me question the likelihood of me being an INFP is how much Fe I use. As a kid I used a good deal of Fi, but now I mainly use Fe. For a few weeks I thought I was an INFJ and I was having an INFJ vs. INFP debate, but after watching your video on "5 Signs You're Not an INFJ" and realizing how strong my Si is, I discarded this idea. I'm now leaning towards ISFJ, but have not discarded the possibility of INFP. I definitely relate to aspects of INFP, but the more I learn about ISFJ the more I feel that it fits me and the more I realize how prevalent my Si is. I really never considered ISFJ because I had the mentality (thanks to endless stereotypes) that ISFJ's aren't creative, and I'm very creative. But this video has helped clear things up for me. The fantasy world in my head was an INFP or INFJ thing I thought, so it was a pleasant surprise for me when you said that it's common for ISFJ's to retreat into their heads because of all the sensory input they're receiving. I have very elevated senses. To me, loud sounds are louder, tastes are stronger, scents are more intense. I have terrible anxiety on top of it all, so having a fantasy world (which isn't that fantastical honestly, it's just about fictional characters I like), to retreat to is a consistent coping mechanism for me. My memories are vivid and detailed, and I can play memories from a long time ago like a movie in my head and feel the emotions all over again. This makes it very hard for me to let go of grudges. I also hate change and fear the future because I want things to stay the same. As for Fi vs. Fe, as I've grown, I've become much more concerned with other people and their feelings than my own. I need harmonious surroundings and will let people walk all over me if it means avoiding conflict. I do have strong values that I don't necessarily compromise, but I'm very unlikely to disrupt group harmony by voicing my opinions. I don't have a strong sense of individuality, I'd rather not stand out. I need constant input from others, my decision-making skills are non-existent and I'd much rather other people make the decisions. I freeze if people ask for my opinion on something. For example, it irritates me when people ask me something like where I want to go to dinner, what movie I want to watch, etc. I just want somebody else to choose because I agonize over the thought of people not being happy with my decision and me ruining everything. So, I'm really relating to Fe. I do think I have a good deal of Ne, but even though I can think of a considerable amount of possibilities, I feel like my Ti steps in and makes me think through things logically. I'm not at all impulsive. I need lots of time to think through things and consider every angle. My Ne definitely contributes to my creativity, but my creative works (I'm a writer) aren't fantastical in nature. My stories are based around people, and their relationships and feelings. I pretty much only write fanfiction because, in addition to my enjoyment of developing established characters, I have a very hard time coming up with original characters. I'd much rather take a prexisting character and add layers to them. I could add a lot more about my cognitive functions usage, but I feel like I included the most significant things. I know this video was made a while back, but if anybody sees this and feels compelled to provide some insight, I'd love to hear your thoughts. 😁

I'm glad you posted this. I have a friend who is very obviously ISFJ, but has been poisoned by the rampant N and T biases present in the typing communities. She's been trying to figure out how she fits into INFJ/INTJ when even she can see that some things don't work (because she's ISFJ 😐). With that said, I would like to see a distinct ISFP video. The other videos you have are comparing it to other types, and not really explaining it on its own. I think quite a few "INTJ" need to see that video.

I love your way of rethinking the cognitive functions and MBTI. I watched your "5 Signs You're not an INTP" recently and have been absolutely down the rabbit hole of watching what feels like half your channel since then! I'm an INTP who orginally mistyped as an ISFJ (then years as an INFP) and while I've made sense of that with the idea of "inferior" Fe and Fe grip, I find it truly fascinating to hear your thoughts and how basically most things you're saying just make a lot more sense than anything I've learned in my near decade of being interested in personality theory. A part of me doesn't like it, because I like it too much! I don't like feeling like I am biased in what information I accept and what I disregard. But your way of explaining your theory and getting into the details is much, much more appealing to me than the general "type X is like Y" because you explain "this is why type x is inclined to be like y" it just tickles my fascination in just the right way. I feel like I understand more about MBTI with your videos than I have understood about it in literal 9 years of being curious about typology. Thank you!!

This video sums up almost all of the observations I've been taking note of about my type for the past few months. Signs 2 and 5 **especially** stood out to me, because recently I've been emphasizing the importance of the "flow state" as a means to diminish anxiety. I also briefly wondered if I was an INFP given that Fi felt so resonant with me at certain points, specifically at times when I sit and journal my thoughts -- this was one of the reasons why I made a video about the INFPs last year. On sign 3, the point about struggling with rapid firing of creative ideas is the reason why I sort of distance myself from group settings, as well as the rationale behind why I used to go into small conflicts with my ENFP friends (not so often nowadays, though). I can't give enough positive regards to this video, it's sooo resonant. So thank you very much for putting this out! Side note: I can't help but think the green and amber lighting behind you was an intentional color choice, but maybe I'm looking too much into it 😅

Hey mystamystic, sir! You're around here, nice. Those observations are pretty interesting, this video certainly helps us to understand isfjs better. Especially their Si-Ti pair in action. Hey there, your explanation of the ISFJ cognition is amazing. For the last year or so I identified with the INFJ but something didn't exactly click. I feel like I was trying to relate to this type a bit too much while my cognitive preferences since the beginning were, in fact, a tad different. This video alongside your other videos and the e-book have clarified so much about my understanding of typology. I feel much closer to home with the ISFJ and its gateways - also, the TeNe blindspot especially stuck with me, for I seem to struggle a lot with improvisation, less so with precise actions. I'm still on my self-discovery journey but since I started watching your channel I feel like I've made significant progress. Keep up the good work! 😀

I'm basically sure that I'm an Si-dom, and because of that I've been scouring KZbin for more information. To be honest, I can hardly find anything that feels like it applies or even makes sense, but this video has given me a lot to think about. Since you've posted this one, I'm sure it's already on your list, but I just wanted to put in my vote for an ISTJ video. I'm really interested in how Te and Fi change the way Si and Ne are experienced. ISTJs have the stereotype of being very rigid and routine, just like ISFJs, but I feel like the stereotype is even stronger with ISTJs because of their Te. It would be interesting to see what's beyond that.

Another great video, nice to see the MBTI king again! Hope you had a nice break, and came back with new energy :) Your videos are a breath of fresh air in the almost horoscope-like MBTI landscape of KZbin. I could write a very long comment about the ways in which I believe the CPT to be superior to other popular MBTI systems (beginning on the fact that you’ve *actually* read, understood, and based your work on Jung while improving and building upon it), but it would take quite a while, although you can rest assured, Harry, that I had it all written out in my head. I am sceptical of all personality-typing systems, though I do like to understand their bases, and so far yours has been the most logical and creative in the way it describes the types as fluctuating in a way (with function dipping and such). I appreciate that you see personality as something that cannot be fully described or understood, but at the same time *can*, and most often *has*, hidden, underlying cognitive patterns that a person finds almost automatic, even if they don’t consciously know about it. The way some people described personality and cognitive functions as confined to some rigid borders didn’t seem quite right to me. Your passion and innovation rekindled what’s left of my old interest in MBTI, and it has been fun to watch your channel grow from its beginning. An idea for a video, though I’m sure you already have a long list of them: a comparison of ISTP and INTJ. I’ve seen a few comments asking for something similar in your older videos, so it seems not only I have a problem with telling the difference between those two types. I’m reasonably sure someone close to me is either an ISTP or an INTJ, but I can never tell with certainty. Perhaps it’s due to the authority of Se that guides/drives the thought process of convergent Ti-Ni in the ISTP, making it tricky to tell the difference between it and the INTJ’s divergent Te-Se. I hope to see more of your movie/book series typings as well, it’s a good way of seeing very different examples of the same types, and making the process of typing itself more tangible with the way you methodically explain why someone is a certain type and isn’t another, though they could be quite close to it. Listening to your thought process is interesting, even if (though very rarely) I do not agree on some of the points you make for one reason or the other. Then again - that’s the beauty of fiction, people may interpret it in different lights! If you watch anime series, or would like to start - I’d recommend Attack on Titan, it would be a lot of fun to one day see you type the characters in this series. Of course, it’s only a lil’ recommendation from a random supposed INTP (thank you for not describing the type as unfeeling by the way, it was getting rather tiring). Feel free to ignore it, I know some people tend to dislike anime and manga! Have a good one, Harry! P.S. Sorry for the length of the comment, usually I’m a shadow viewer, not really used to this format of writing, hah. Also, this channel is one of the best ASMRs to me - so soothing :)

Happy you're back uploading, especially with a video I've been looking forward to :) I also think that what you mentioned about being a common type and how it could lead to finding one's unique personality or identity through different means is interesting. Especially because there are a lot of people online saying that being a common type means that someone also has to have a common personality or even that they don't struggle in life because the world was "made for them". I don't think that more common types would necessarily always do so more than rarer ones though because that would require them to know that these aspects of themselves are common. A lot of things that distinguish the types aren't often talked about outside of typology communities though (or at least just payed little attention to) and many people don't share the motivations and underlying principles that might point towards their type unless they're specifically asked. All of this could lead someone to believe that what's related to their type makes them rare or at least uncommon even if it's not. There are a lot of things most people can relate to (not just referring to typology), but because it's not socially accepted or simply not talked about, most people think that this is a part of what makes them different from the majority even though they're actually really common or even the norm and I wouldn't be surprised if it can be the same when it comes to typology as well. In general I don't think that it plays much of a role if a type is more common anyway because even the most common type probably makes up less than 20%, so it's not like most people you come across are just one type or anything like that.

Also I have drawn a portrait before not realizing that 5+ hours had passed, because I was so immersed in it. If I am alone I can get very into my mindscape, and lose track of time. My practical side will set an alarm so that I don't lose hours. Yes I see the details, and the spaces between them, and the beauty in the contrast..noticing details makes me feel more alive. Thanks again for another brilliant and necessary video Harry. I’d love it if you could publish some short (1-2 sentences) type definitions for the 16 types on the CPT website. Of course short descriptions couldn’t do each type justice, but I think we desperately need some clear, accurate definitions for people to access. I like introducing other people to typing, but people are often unwilling to read books/articles or watch videos until they’re interested, and equally I don’t want to send people to online tests that I don’t see as helpful. So some short clear definitions on your website would be a great resource to point people to to introduce them to/ get them interested in typing. Thanks again, God bless!

I was once colleagues with an ISFJ and I agree on those signs you mentioned, especially the lines of reasoning being sequential and precise, that detail orientation applies to picking out grammatical errors whenever she can and it sort of got to me over time. I was always confused on what type she was because she didn’t look anything like the standard ISFJ and seemed more like an INFP. Once, I casually mentioned that I was a scatterbrain who was easily distracted and couldn’t remember things well, I was surprised to find out from her that she too was a scatterbrain despite having all the signs that she could think and explain anything so clearly. As compared to her, my brain absolutely struggles to put things in order, my speech, thoughts, actions are all over the place because of Ne. In my opinion it is a blessing to have a structured thought process. I don’t know if you’re a believer in subtypes but I reckon this species of ISFJ may be the ones most prone to mistypings as NPs, and the Si ones NJs.

Hello. Just so you know, if you ever read this: Thanks to mostly you (but also Michael Pierce and Nathan, aka: Love Who, out of all the people who were human and whom I was not praying to) I finally learned the answer to what the third thinking pattern is, that I have, which is lateral thinking. Not learned, but born. And, because of learning that and primarily because of your very well made videos, I learned what is true about my brain, in trauma and at rest. I am a lateral thinker. At rest, I tend to rest on either side, where the other two thinking patterns live, most- whichever I can handle or whichever is best suited to the situation. On one side, I am ENFP and on the other side I am ISFJ. In the middle is where I usually am in varied states of stress that have to be responded to, whether the stress is from a good source or bad, as long as it is fairly intense. And, there I can be any other type but I don't go "P" or "T" until things get real wacky. So, ISTP, ENTP, INTJ, ISTJ, ENTJ are 5 alarm personality types for me. ENFJ , ESFJ, INFJ, ISFP, INFP are kind of high alert, needs more attention and just switching sides isn't going to be enough, types for me. Thank you for helping me learn all that. It makes me feel much more relaxed and capable of making rational decisions that can be sustained.

Please consider finishing the Star Wars character typing with the analysis on prequels - I'm really interested in your reasoning on that. Many say that Vader is an ESTJ, but I think, at least with the settings of prequel, he's more of an ESFP exhibiting Te and Si, thus creating the image of a "unstoppable ESTJ". I want to type more of the characters within the great story of Star Wars prequel (especially The Clone Wars TV series, if you've watched them), but I suck at typing and cannot really get over the first impressions, either from PDB or my unconscious relevance to stereotypes - I never came to conclusion of what type Yoda is until you well explained it in the aforementioned video. I'm really interested in your ideas on the characters that evolved over the epic era of the old republic, whether it be heroes or villains or those in the middle.

This might very much help to explain why I tested most of my adult life as an intj. Only recently have I asked others to type me. (I felt very connected to some intj qualities, but others I didnt.) First I was typed (by Joyce Meng) as an enfp. Next I was typed by Eric (Talking wth Famous People) as an isfj. This video has shed some light on why I tested for so long as an intj and why my enneagram is always 5w4 on tests as well. I have been pretty much laughed at in other circles for ever having tested as an intj...like I was so delusional to presume to be that special. That still makes me laugh. I laugh not only because that is such a pompous response, but because there is a high likelihood that the person saying it to me ISN'T an intj either! This entire self discovery process has been so interesting. I have looked into being each type I was told I was. Great learning process. Gives me greater appreciation for all the different types. Helps me see those qualities in myself and things I want to improve as well! I've decided I might just adopt a new type each month. Look at and read all I can about that type. Find parts of that type in me (if I can). Enact the type in as much as I can...see where I fail and why. Really should be a great learning experience!

Hi Harry, thank you for your insight and i love your content so much. I also have two quesions. In second sign, you mention about Isfj have high resolution images out of both thought and recall. But all of this and also their imagination image is based on somethings they have experienced or more concrete and tangible right? So as an Infj, about your imagination/ mind, do you create image based on your own data or do you need somethings to support it? Like it's automatic, just pop out naturally things that you haven't seen before (or maybe you have but unconscious). I just want to know how Isfj and Infj form their image. I'm sorry for any grammatical mistakes. Hope you have a great day.
@CognitivePersonalityTheory
@CognitivePersonalityTheory Жыл бұрын
Invariably we all need existing data/experiences as a precursor to imagination, but whether an ISFJ or INFJ experience the moment more concretely can depend. The ISFJ can more easily engage from the ego, whereas the INFJ may feel more compulsively anchored in - so both experiences can be concrete in their own way. No doubt the replay value tends to be higher fidelity for the ISFJ though, whereas my recall and that of other INFJ's seems to be more of an impression/approximation

How much should one trust other people’s perceptions of our behaviors when it comes to MBTI? I personally think I’m Fe -inferior, but I wonder if I’m Fe-aux and it causes me to over relate to an identity which isn’t mine. Other people have only typed me as INTP and ISFJ, which I find odd; however, hearing you explain ISFJ is helpful. I don’t consider myself to be very sequential or procedurally minded despite relating to certain aspects of si-ti such as losing attention to my surroundings while in a flow state. However, usually multiple divergent paths fire off all at once.

0:17 Is that a teaser Harry? :) Again, the synchronicities. I have seen that this occurs a lot and I agree with you Harry. The oppositional or contact function in socionics can result in the type appearing more intuitive or sensing than it actually is. For instance an ISFJ due to Ne oppositional, and the environment of the modern world that allows for exploration, would make this type naturally more open minded, and thus they would appear more 'intuitive'. The same for INFJs. Due to their oppositional function of Se, it would allow them to better understand the world, and thus appear more 'realistic' due to the environment forcing them to speed up the process. However I think that types are actually mixes. In this way we can't say that some other type is worse than the other just because it is a sensing type. Because we ourselves contain the same elements but in different degrees. You seem to have a very purist view of who's an INFJ and who isn't. And I did the same for INTJs. But I have seen that those who you think that may be mistypes. They may simply be INFJs who are leaning more towards the other orientation. I say this because it seems that the environment and genetics also shape us. So to categorize someone as being an ISFJ just because of their genetical makeup and environmental factors with no input of their own, makes it so that it doesn't put into the light the type as well which has an intentional component to it as it presents the ego image. Our ego image fights against both genetics and environment. Hence why we are constantly at war. It seems very confusing in the sense that our entire foundation is built upon this presumption of the ego image. But if that falls, then what do we have to stand on? Because we have nothing. No alternative. But this also presents a hope that I see. Our ego image presents the hope that is not perfect imperfection. Because if it would be that way then we wouldn't be able to adapt to it anything we could try. But because even the imperfection which is our ego is imperfect, that means that we can still try to strive towards perfection with it as it unlocks this possibility. So maybe it's not about destroying this foundation but eliminating what's unecesssary and changing it with what's necessary while keeping it. Also, could you do a similar video with this format for the INTJ vs ISTJ? Type made me see that we are not perfect and the most we can do is to do with our imperfect imperfections. And that being a certain type is no reason to be proud of but to be grateful for it's strengths and humble for it's weaknesses. Also, I like that you finally posted after so long time. It's good to see you back after this time! I appreciate your content, Harry! Keep it up! :) PS: BTW, I changed my name if you haven't figured from Byzantium Crusader to Nova Imperialis Phoenix!

If INFJs have an SeTe blindspot, do INFPs then have a TeSe blindspot? If so, what's the difference between these two blindspots (or between the ISFJ and ISFP blindspots)?
@CognitivePersonalityTheory
@CognitivePersonalityTheory Жыл бұрын
That's right! The INFJ's blindspot is Te-emphasised so the rational component is harder to observe, whereas it is the opposite for the INFP, which is why the type tends to feel more out of body than the INFJ. So the auxiliary aspect of the blindspot is in essence observationally weaker

This is a dumb question. But as an INFJ how good are you at drawing? Idk i think not being able to draw has something to do with inferior se or lack of se
@ootumn
@ootumn Жыл бұрын
Having an inferior Se doesn’t affect one’s drawing ability. Drawing mainly involves with muscle memory/ control; Se has nothing to do with it. Well yes slightly when looking at references, but to be a good artist, you need to learn how to analyze what you are seeing instead of drawing what you think you are seeing. ---[ To go in depth if you are curious: When drawing an object that is in front of us, most beginner artists draw what they perceive rather than what they see. Our brain quickly uses a picture dictionary to recognize and take fragments of the object that we are seeing to match our schema, the memory of that object, hence why the drawing isn’t accurate, because they are drawing what the brain knows, not with the eyes. (this isn't Si or having little Se by the way) ] Almost every highly conscious Se user, who is a beginner artist, will make the same mistake just like everyone else or just be flat out bad at it. Anyone can be a good artist, unless you don't have hands... or feet? mouth?!? Plus, it is difficult to draw exactly what we are visualizing, and almost everyone uses all functions equally (I suppose), it’s just the matter of how much control you have or how conscious you are while using them I hope this makes sense!! :D -an infj who can draw... and has hands 👍
