I have learned to make peace with the fact that some people are indeed our friends, whereas some other people are acquaintances we regularly meet because we do certain group / community activities together. Things I try to focus on remembering: -Someone not being interested and actually TELLING YOU is a GOOD thing. -Its always best to be told sooner rather than later because it saves everyone involved precious time. Time that is best not wasted on pursuing a fruitless relation. -If feelings are not mutual, you don't want it. Love has to be a two-way street to truly work. -as Barney Stinson said; "New is always better!" It's a privilege to move on and find new, different people to surprise you. If they'd experience some positive things directly linked to the reason of this pain, the tolerance would lower again. But i absolutely see your point, i just think it's not measurably true, because pain tolerance. P.S. what i mean is: it can absolutely feel worse subjectively, but the pain level isn't comparable, because if you open up to your crush you create vulnerability.

A little extra advice before you go to college: match the level of investment. If they don't text much, then don't text them much. If they don't start a conversation much, then don't talk to them. Talk with those who want to talk with you. If they're interested, you'll find it obvious because they'll proactively make an effort for you. Whenever you're in doubt, go back through past interactions and ask yourself 'is this balanced in terms of starting the convo and replies?'

Got some rejections throughout my life and it really sucked. I mostly get two types of people around me: Either it's the ones only interested in the casual fling...or I'm stuck being the "buddy". It made me so frustrated during my teenage years and in my early 20's. Made me think I'm not capable of ever finding somebody who loves me for who I am and is interested in me romantically. Maybe wants to start a family with me later on... But then again, I never made it myself easy with opening up about my feelings to them, as I was so scared of being hurt/rejected again. For now, I'm trying to work on myself mentally, so that I can learn to open up again and if a situation comes where I could get hurt, then hey, then it wasn't the right partner, I guess. Even though it sometimes still hurts seeing couples kissing, hugging etc. while I sit there alone, I know that it shouldn't mean the end of the world if I don't find my soul mate. But society really makes us think otherwise, especially as a woman: "Why aren't you married yet?! Why don't you have children yet?! You're in your late 20s/early 30's, you should have settled down by now!!!"

To be fair, it could also mean that the other person does not necessarily want to pursue a relationship and/or doesn't know that you are interested in them on a romantic level. As someone who was that other person at one point, it never crossed my mind that the other person had that level of interest towards me (mainly because I don't pick up on hints/signs like these at all). Literally 3 years later it finally clicked that they were likely interested in me. Am I kicking myself for it? Not really, it would have been nice but not a necessity. It is however an eye-opener as to how many hints I probably missed.

Everyone whose exprienced this and is still single, please be aware, not just that of the people who are uninterested, but to the people who are also interested but are too shy to say anything. I promise you, there will be a ton of people you meet throughout your life that will and/or already do find you attractive, you just have to meet them first and get to know them, because in this day and age, people are masters at masking their true feelings socially and need to feel safe enough before expressing their true feelings.

People also change their minds. That being said, it is 100% important to give them the space and ability to see YOU for the value you bring to the table. If you told them you liked them, and they said "no", pull away. When you pull back your attention and energy, that gives them the space to assess. Their choice can only be changed if they have given it enough thought and consideration. If it happens, good for you! If not, at least they gave it some time and thought. Flip the tables, you would have done the same for someone who likes you.

I might have messed up.
