I agree with every point you discussed here. I’ve seen many coaches in my area not being able to hit properly and they suck when it comes to playing matches.

I beat my coach at the age of 12 with 6/0 6/0 because he teaches me well and Bjorne Borg his coach couldn’t hit 2 balls in a row but he produced one of the biggest at that time !! He’s also repeating the same stuff every time , he also is certified, he uses bait to attack viewers 🤔and the worst is that he’s condescending or disparaging other coaches to much which you don’t do . So for me he’s a young fake thinking he’s invented the lightbulb

I have backhand anxiety. So most of the time when I play matches i can barely hit a decent backhand. I tense up and either hit bottom of the net or open the racquet face and try to control the ball by swinging slower. Neither are good enough for the level I compete in. I told the coach of my club this and also said if we do a drill ill probably make all my backhands because In training i usually hit better backhands. So he made me hit a few and just looked at me and said there´s nothing wrong with your backhand. I told him I know in training its fine. but when i play matches just before i have to hit the ball something happens in my brain and i´m just not able to perform this shot. he doesn´t understand. I have been struggling with this for some years, i have accepted it for a while. But now i really want to compete again and improve so i´ll try to find a coach who can help me with this. Thanks for the signs to look out for.

I too have anxiety with better competition and certain shot then my thought gets scrambled on shots decisions. My situation I feel i need more experience playing better players to help me Get better. I just need to learn correct technique and have Gameplan situation . Having matches help improve your tennis. Anxiety will go away once you start winning your matches and your skills improves and alsLoosing matches give you this loosing mentality that affects your game. Worry about your game not your opponent

@@ferdinandbautista984 Try doing specific drills, such as a two shot drill. It wont always come back where you expect, but if you get solid hitting your first ball, then the more solid that is, the better your second shot will be. It will also open up the court and give you more margin, so you actually hit more safely for your second shot.

Very good points bro. I am a physical trainer myself in UK and I have take on tennis as an adult learner. I had 4 coaches so far, my 1st coach was the best he heavily invest in good basic fundamentals and kept it very simple but he changed his profession and left coaching and I am on my 4th coach now they all have good and bad. You are absolutely spot on because they gave me instructions and I am supposed to understand and do it flawlessly for the rest of the lesson 🤣 especially for an adult, coaches are less patient and unrealistic with their students’ progression. Some of them can’t even bother to communicate within reasonable time to arrange lessons etc. So I am on my 4th now and I have already took a break from lessons and bought the ball machine instead. You are still very young and coaching might be relatively new to you. On the flip side of the coin be ready for some of the difficult students too. As you mentioned in the videos just don’t become one of those coaches. Best wishes from UK.🙏🏽

You make some valid points. Most people who take tennis lessons don't realize how good or bad their coaches are until well into the coaching sessions. Making sure that the instructor is at least certified is a good starting point. It's not a guarantee just like there are good doctors with MD's and there are bad doctors with MD's but at least it indicates that they have some certifiable degree of training. Most certifications also come with liability insurance which is important as well. Follow up with references. Check the person's resume and check their portfolio for advanced players. Don't rely too much on their playing resume as the ability to play well is not a necessary indicator of a coach's ability to accurately evaluate a student's ability and transmit corrective measures. Students should make sure that the coach is clear on what their objectives are and try to assess the personality and coaching philosophy of the perspective coach. Just because you didn't get along with a coach or were unable to advance under his tutelage doesn't mean that he/she was a bad coach. Sometimes there are just incompatible combinations. Remember as well that not all students are good students. I share your concerns, to a degree, with the certifying agencies like the ITF, USPTA, PTR, etc. However, I correlate it to what I experienced with my graduating class in college. We all received degrees but we were not all, in my estimation, equally qualified. Some were maximally qualified and some were minimally qualified. It's the same with tennis certifications. My focus has to be with the quality of my own professional qualifications. I'm certified as an Elite Professional with the USPTA and a Level 2 Professional with the PTR and I always strive to make sure that the quality of the service that I provide is far above the standards of the certifications that I hold.

Id just like to add the key is to find someone who understands tennis and can deliver the information well. While also understanding the players needs. Competitive playing experience does not automatically equate to the pro being a good teacher.

Well said. Another sign of bad coaches is that they avoid answering questions they don't have an answer for. They also give bad advices such as "snap your wrist on your serve".

Some coaches are better teachers than players. People absorb information in different ways, sight, by doing, and visual. I get great lessons by listening to commentators on tv, and by conversations with my coach in a car.

I’m a future Coach 2 coach in Canada and you will see the more you climb the certification the tougher it gets. Back then it was the case it was easy. I’m finishing my Cp2 and the new one is actually fun and somewhat tough (not impossible tho) The instructor certification is only the entry level of coaching. Obviously you are better than just an instructor coach so try to do your CP1 (it’s quite easy) and than cp2, coach 2 , coach 3 and many more!

I Love your backhand hitting drill using the ball machine. looks like great practice hitting the ball on the rise and developing consistentcy on that shot. I have Proton ball machine, i think i will try that, but you also need practicing that exact shot with deep ball vs short ball by moving up and back on the court position which mimics opponent's shot.

What's your view of the place of video analysis in coaching? Are you able to spot and correct the small things that make all the difference without video analysis? Are your adult students able to follow your corrections without seeing themselves on film? I'm talking about intermediate level players here rather than beginners.

Good coaches work in the Footwork lesson into every lesson hitting the shot or swing pattern consistency. I am not a professional coach but i work in and emphasize Footwork lesson at every level of player. It's not as much of fun part of the lesson but it is actually more critical than developing a beautiful swing. but 90 % of the players doesn't seem to understand it,,,, Not sure why??

Coaches can be helpful. But if the great Pancho Gonzales was self taught what's YOUR PROBLEM? Too lazy to do your own trial and error? Or maybe you don't wanna lose much more than you wanna win and you look for excuses other than yourself for your lack of success. Desire to win and the ability to change and adjust is all you need. IF you have tennis talent.

Is okay I comment my past tennis coaches experiences?. They are all excellent coaches . Like you said they had lots of students. They can coach all day at current cost for 1 hour. One of coach once play for the country Davis Cup one was once WTA top 100 and the last one now coaching in Florida USTA academy. Not bad of coaches . And I still suck. Reason is can not afford continue taking more lessons. It is very very expensive process. Unless, you have few millions setting in the bank.

Confused about the ratings. *A ranking of **#144** Adult Men's ranking in all of Canada is extremely high level!* At least a USTA 6.0+ level which equates to a UTR of 12.5 - 13.5 or higher. But you say you were only a UTR 11.
