hi, I bought caravan for me and my friend to go fishing, I got it for 140 pound. I fitted towbar onto my car myself and took caravan onto a site last weekend. none of us had a clue what we were doing, we got caravan stuck because we had span it round on the spot twice because our cable wasnt long enough. we had numerous other problems but in the end it was a great weekend. we got help from another couple of people who seen the mess we were getting into, they said it was hilarious lol. jst wanted to share that

I turn the mirror auto fold off to save the towing mirrors doing any paint damage to the door if you lock the car with them on. May sound stupid, but I've placed a label on the mirror glass to remind me to switch this off (getting to an age where I forget things!!!!).

A small suggestion on Aquarolls (and similar containers)....they're heavy when full and I've never understood why folks struggle to stand them upright on return from the water tap (if you have a weak back it's an action risking hurt or worse)....Most of the modern containers have a separate access cap in the side, so simply roll the barrel into position with the side cap at the top and drop the pump/pickup pipe in.... it's one more lift avoided. Energy thus saved can be used to pour more beer/wine.... :-)

Some useful tips guys, as a footnote I've just attended a C & M H manoeuvring course, they recommended when you reverse your van onto a pitch, always make your last move a forward one, this then takes the tension off the hitch and aligns the brakes, only a small movement is needed, I hope this helps.

Have I got this wrong, isn't the aqua roll designed so you don't have to carry water
@keithandmichele5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jan & Bob, No, not wrong 😀 The top ups are literally for topping it up. For example, if you’ve had a shower at night you can easily top up the aqua roll instead of having to disengage it from the caravan & roll to the nearest tap. Handy if it’s dark, wet & windy! A lot of people do this with a watering can stored beside the aqua roll, we do it with the collapsible water carrier as a space saving measure. Hope this clarifies the topic for you. We learnt the water flap tip many years ago but then found driving a motorhome on the motorway with the unsecured flap constantly hitting the side of the van is also incredibly annoying. I've no idea how I'm going to remember all of these tips over KZbin in the near future when I take my debut voyage of caravanning in New Zealand. My head is spinning ! I have driven a 40 foot designer transporter with 2 lwb fridge vans onboard across the country for Polar Motors in York UK in the 90s before I left the Homelands but that was a rigid chassis and didn't seem so daunting as 21 feet of a wobbly caravan behind an Isuzu SUV ! Goodness ! I guess I should sub so I can post at the time of emergency advice LOL Winter Greetings to you both from Middle Earth 🙃

Re: the water containers, my top tip is get yourself a second aquaroll, fill both to start with, when one is empty or low, simply swap the pump head over to the full one, then take the empty one to refill at your leisure. I've been doing this for years now as do many seasoned caravanners and never have to worry about running out, or hand carrying 10 litres of water.

My answer to the steps sinking into the ground (no carpet involved) is to use 40mm diameter plastic tubing such as is used for internal or external domestic plumbing. Cut sections out of them to insert the legs of the steps into. This spreads the load preventing any sinking into grass or fine hardstanding. Very lightweight and easily dropped into small spaces in the boot of the car for transporting.

Add to the mirror tilt, switch off the auto fold, if like mine your mirrors fold right in the towing mirrors his the window glass. So when I fit the towing mirrors I switch off the auto fold. On my Mercedes it's done by the menu buttons on the steering wheel.

Alternative for Tip1: If you have a motor mover - engage it and carefully move the caravan backwards away from car until hitch has extended. 5 great tips - happy caravaning!

"if you are brave enough to reverse on to pitch" ! electric movers are creating a whole group of caravaners who have lost the art of reversing, wonderful when you come face to face with them on a country lane, the look of sheer panic on their faces is a joy when they realise someone will have to go back :-)

Just ordered my first ever caravan for jan/feb delivery. Any site recommendations would be appreciated, in Devon, Cornwall, Dorset,New forest etc. Don't know how many sites have fully serviced pitches these days but that's what we would prefer. Thanks and great channel

Tip 1. for the truma water inlet. On the inlet pistol, smear olive oil or vegetable oil on the two o-rings. This will stop the cracking around the bottom of the plastic inlet plate nossle fixed to the caravan shell, that usually happens over a period of time because the pistol slides in and particularly out much easier. This will save you buying a new inlet plate nossle which costs an unbelievable £38 or more. Tip 2. Always travel with the Truma water heater gas outlet shroud removed. They have a habit of falling off in transit costing you £22 or more a go. Tip 3. Never buy one of those £9.99 nose weight gauges, get a better make that is usually calibrated like a Milenco one. Better still pay nothing and use your personal scales and two small wooden boards, beneath and above the scales to spread the load and steady the scales alongside a stout shaft of wood placed vertically between the alco cup and the wood placed on top of the scales and lower the jockey wheel to find the nose weight. Tip 4. In my experience using a ramp in conjunction with a motor mover is a nightmare, whilst side to side levelling the caravan. I have found that an adapted Milenco mechanical leveller is the quickest, quietest, most mechanically robust and cheapest option for side to side levelling on a single axle caravan. It does have a problem though. It comes supplied with a cheap ratchet, which takes a lot of effort to use in practice. Instead i have bought a drill drive to square drive ( set of 3 sizes for £3.50 from screwfix, which you only need one) and a 15 mm socket i already had, to operate the Milenco leveller with a portable drill. When levelling always ensure the caravan handbrake is on of course with a chock placed either side of the wheel that is not being lifted, to level the caravan. Tip 5. Use a drill drive to operate the steadies. Much quicker and far less effort but be careful not to damage the floor of the caravan by lowering the steadies beyond just steadying the caravan. A drill drive can apply a lot of force very quickly, if you are not careful using the drill, with the steadies in the fully up or down positions.
