People may say that s-log is pointless for 8-bit, but for Sony Alpha cameras in particular, the S-log profiles have the least amount of in-camera noise reduction. This translates to less ghosting artifacts from noise reduction, so that alone could be worth it. It get's you more luminance dynamic range even with 8-bit, just don't go crazy on the coloring.

Another super informative and well-done video, Harv! As someone still very amateur I really appreciate all the side-by-sides and explicit pointing out of things to watch out for. It's helping me develop my eye and my knowledge of what to look out for. Please, please, please do a video on curves! Thanks so much, Harv. Huge help. Thanks for helping me slowly get better at video.

Very good video explaining the topic. Too many KZbinr talk about log files assuming viewer already have some understanding on that. I am a photographer who’s starting to do some video shooting. And my knowledge on log files has been like bits and pieces with a lot other information sources. Your explanation is so much better than a lot of other similar videos! Bravo.
@amuseworkshop88836 жыл бұрын
I think a great tip also, is tricking the camera into staying in +2.0 exposure. When you manually set your ISO while in S-LOG, Sony automatically sets exposure. When you set ISO to auto, you can manually set your exposure. So for clean footage, manually set your minimum ISO and maximum ISO (under auto) to the same number. For example -- I set my minimum to 800 and maximum to 800. This way I can set exposure to +2.0 (without it ever changing) and the ISO will sit still at 800.Thanks for the video, great tips. Good luck everyone!
@JonnyDeeFilms6 жыл бұрын
amuse|workshop, doesn’t the S-log automatically bump your ISO to 1600?
@amuseworkshop88836 жыл бұрын
on some Sony cameras yes. Some are able to bump up it only to 800 for a slightly cleaner s-log image.

Dude thank you so much. I just started using the a7iii like 4 days ago, did my own little comparison, and with indoor light and colors, S-LOG 3 outperformed S-LOG 2 and HLG IMO by FAR. I've found that following the meter and overexposing my Cine2 profile by 1/2 to 2/3 of a stop gives me a near perfect (for me) SLOG2 exposure when I switch profiles. May not help everyone, but I think it's worth a shot if you have to shoot by eye like I do, even if you shoot 8-bit. (I use an A7III, so I'm stuck with that.)

Thank you so much. This is exactly the information I was looking for for days! Just as a sidenote...Maybe I didn’t quite get what you were talking about, but when you say „aliasing“ I think you mean banding or artefacting. Aliasing is a stairs-effect along edges caused by low resolution

Thanks for the good video, Harv. Just a quick note to anyone that if you use resolve you MIGHT want to use Resolves Color Management tool instead of LUTs. Avery Peck has a good video on the Resolve Color Management and SLOG and highly recommend it to anyone shooting in SLOG and using resolve.

Just watched Avery's video on that the other day. Just throwing a LUT onto S-LOG without Rec.709 conversion doesn't seem like a great idea, after watching Avery's video.

Great work as always bro. Thank you. I saw the LUT pack you recommended in your video descriptions I watched their promo video for their newest pack at least and didn’t see anything about a Rec 709 lut, where would you recommend I find that?
@slangdoll6 жыл бұрын
Cole DeRuse I would also like to know the 709 lut. The ones I have used seem to be designed with underexposed slog in mind... if it doesnt look great upon application without tweaking, I know it's doing more harm than good.
So helpful, even in 2021 a couple years later. Do you have another video on straying from native/dual native ISO? I'm unsure how far exactly I can stray (in a real world run and gun setting with NO grey card)!
