Lots of people are mentioning the Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook. I didn't include it because I already made a whole dedicated video to that treasure. You can watch that video here 👉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpvYgH2Nntyrj8k Let me know your favorite spinning and fiber book titles in the comments! Happy spinning fiber friends! 🧶📘💜

I’m watching this while at work in a library and taking notes. I’ve checked each title to see which we already have in stock and which ones we need to order. If anyone looks for a book at a library and can’t find it ASK A LIBRARIAN!! Sometimes we have the budget to order books and don’t know exactly what the public wants. Get those spinning books on the shelves!

Speaking of libraries, I was able to find Alden Amos's book via interlibrary loan, so if anyone is despairing because they would like to get their hands on one of the out of print spinning books, and your local library doesn't have it, try looking at your statewide system. This might be more successful for some of those Interweave Press books rather than some of those published in the '70's, but still worth looking, and better than dropping $200 on a used copy!

A couple of Christmases, ago, or so my, brother gave me The Intentional Spinner. It was a very gently used copy he had in his library and is hands down the best present he has ever given me. Fantastic book. I think he had a brief fling with spinning, or wanted to, and that’s why he bought the book originally. I was happy he had because now I have it.

you are my library of spinning knowledge. but there is a book i would love love love to have...the fleece and fiber source book....drool. If i have a spinning question that you have not covered, i hunt on you tube, and then just play with the fluff until i solve the problem, answer the question, or fall in love with what i have done. I am an old lady and i still love books...real paper books...but they are just way too expensive, so...i am glad you live in my library. happy spinning :)

Do you know the Foxfire books, compliations of articles from the magazine of the same name? They were published in the late 60s and early 70s, the heyday of the back-to-the-earth hippie movement. They focused on traditional crafts of the Appalachians, and I have the whole set that belonged to my grandmother. The second book, Foxfire 2, includes a large section on spinning, including the building of wheels, the preparing of wool, spinning on a great wheel, and weaving on traditional looms. The books are still in print and it's fascinating reading.

The book that introduced me to spinning, sometime in the 80's, was "Sweaters by Hand" (Interweave) by Helene Rush and Rachael Emmons. As a knitter I bought it for the sweater patterns, but was drawn in by the interaction between the authors as Rachael taught Helene about spinning and dyeing and the characteristics of different fibers. Then I just had to build my first spindle from a chopstick and a small plastic lid... later graduated to a secondhand Ashford Traditional... still at it now, nearly forty years later. Also fell in love with Margaret Stove's "Merino" (also Interweave). Mrs. Stove's work absolutely blows me away.

My first book I ever bought about spinning is Hands On Spinning by Lee Raven. I started spinning in the 90s and went to a couple of fiber festivals in Maryland but other than that and this book I’m self taught. I still don’t understand ratios and I know my spinning needs to improve but I still find it relaxing. I usually just spin for the sake of spinning and rarely use anything in projects. I started weaving to change that but still!

respect the spindle and yarnitecture are also available on Rakuten Kobo for those of us who tried out best to avoid amazon for as long as possible. I've been wanting to get the big book of handspinning, partly as a gift for my dad, who is a woodworker, and partly so he and i can build a spinning wheel together.

Thanks for this video Evie. I hadn't really clicked that Interweave books are no longer available, they've just always been there. Such a shame that so much wonderful information isn't there for us now. I hope that some day they will release the Interweave title again. Your video at least made me go looking for some of the books I always thought i'd get 'one day', like Respect the Spindle. And you've got me reflecting on my own library of essentials and nostalgia now.

Thank you for your in-depth approach to looking at your 'must have' books. I love books myself, but find if I have too many, I read rather than spin! One of my most favourites is The Spinner's Book of Fleece by Beth Smith (I think it may be similar to Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook).. Lots of background information on choosing fleece and fibre prep, worsted and woollen spun, and knitted sample photos of the spun yarn. An easy read, and very informative. Dive into this book frequently as a relatively new spinner. And the Spinner's Book of Yarn Design too :)

Intentional Spinner and Virtual Hand-Spinning for beginners were the first two books I bought when I was first learning to spin. The other three on my personal list of “Top Five” are; Amos Alden’s Big Book of Handspinning, The Sheep & Fiber Sourcebook, and Deb Menz’s hard-back book on hand-dyeing. Her big section on color (in-depth color wheels, how to get the colors you want to blend, why some combinations don’t work, etc.) SO helpful! Of course, I have about 20-30 more spinning books that I’d hate to loose. But you did ask about five. 🧶

I love old book smell. Before I even start reading a book I open it up to the middle and take a good whiff. New books just smell like plastic and it's kinda sad. I don't have any of these books but I think the two I'd put on my list are The Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook which isn't mentioned in this video and The Spinner's Book of Yarn Designs 😊 I remember getting Wild Color upon your recommendation (I'm pretty sure it was you anyway... my memory is terrible 😂) and even though I'm not much of a reader, I LOVE having resource books.

I have Spinners’s Book of Designs, Fleece and Fiber Sourcebook (plus others!) but my favourite is Yarnitecture, of course! I also own 4 double treadle wheels which I spin in double drive 🤔 so would be frowned upon by Alden Amos 😂. I have been told I’m not a real spinner because of this (people are funny aren’t they 🥴) but I do what works best for me and disregard others’ opinions. Love your podcast, only recently discovered them so still enjoying all the old ones as well. Love from Australia 🇦🇺💜🧶

Love your book choice. The Big Book of Handspinning is so opinionated - I love it. Even if I don't always agree with it. The library is an amazing place for books. When I started spinning, they didn't have any books on yarn, so I talked with the librarian and she showed me how to request books and let it slip that the best way to keep books on the shelf is to borrow it at least once a year so the computer knows to keep it in circulation.

I've had a couple of these books in my fiber library years before I ever ventured into spinning (I don't know why it seemed so daunting!) but I find them hard to dig into because I have ADHD and they are walls of text (or even GREAT WALLS of text in some cases, lordy that Amos book is a brick). But I've never seen Sarah Anderson's book before and it looks like there are tons of in-depth photos that could help me get hyperfocused enough to read all the text! LOL. I've been very content with knitting and weaving with my simple yarns, but maybe it's time to step up my game. Thanks for another informative video!

Hi Evie. I found this very helpful. I’ve been spinning for two years, completely self taught, picking up tips along the way from your channel. I have some of these books too. I always remember your mantra: if you’re making yarn you’re doing it right. I love my spinning. I use a second hand Ashford traditional but have always coveted your “creaky Elizabeth”. If you only had one spinning wheel, would that be your one of choice? I feel I need to save up and treat myself to a used Elizabeth. What would you advise please. 💕
