I have a small Forrest axe and a cold steel trail boss. The way I have sharpened the $35 trail boss, it works way better than the small forest, but it’s also slightly longer and way heavier. When I go backpacking, the trail boss will be in my truck. The right tools for the right job. The gransfors is awesome for its size, not for all jobs. Great for backpacking in my opinion.

All ax's are slabs of steel on a stick. Soft steel is easy to sharpen but dulls before you're ready to put it away. More expensive ax's are notoriously difficult to sharpen, but that's because they're made of hardened steel (which allows you to keep swinging with a sharp cutting edge for longer)

Old technique that not many people know these days: Use the file on chalk, and purposely load it up. Don't clean it out. The chalk will keep softer materials like low carbon steel and aluminum from gumming the file up as quickly, and it make it much easier to remove. It won't hurt the file.

I’ve noticed when you were swinging both axes,on the small tree, is that the bigger one you was hitting it towards the bottom on the head and not the center. And you did hit the smaller axe in the center. Due to you being used to the smaller one you don’t have to swing as much as you would the bigger one. What if you got used to both then sharpen them to the best of your ability then did another test. Would it have the same bite or a bigger or smaller bite?? Great question?? Would it cut a tree faster or slower??

A lot of negative comments on this video, but I liked it. Rather than crapping all over the 30 dollar axe just because it's a cheaper option, he takes it for what it is and gives a good, detailed review on what each axe is good for. As for myself, I do a lot of scrap runs hauling off unwanted appliances and other salvage for people who want rid of it. I keep a cheap beater hatchet in my truck. It's a handy tool to have around and if I'm just hacking apart junk I don't want to worry about an expensive tool anyhow. If the handle breaks there's plenty more of them at the discount hardware store for cheap and if the edge gets a chip or two in it in a few minutes with a file shes ready to go again.

The choice of what axe someone needs is very simple.If someone makes their living with an axe, then invest in the best their wallet will allow. However, if someone just wants to play "bushcraft", "survivalist", etc. like so many folks on KZbin actually do, then an inexpensive axe is really all they need.

My Dad carried a double bit axe, one side had a long smooth taper like the 150$ one, & the other bit was a short quick taper for splitting wood. You could claim dangerous, like any tool, just respect what it can do. Like electricity handled properly, great tool, mishandled, kill ya in 3nano-seconds. Like the rattle snake said, you knew what I was when ya picked me up. Check out fermented tops in my other post, been doing it for decades with crock pickles, now it's got a fancy name. Too many bush crafters try to overthink the axe. I have two cheap Collins axes. I love both of them. One is vintage and the other is new. I just split some firewood with the new Collins boys axe and it worked very well. I paid about $22 for the new Collins axe. Don't try to overthink it. My cheap axes are much harder than the wood I'm chopping or splitting. Nuff said. Great vid.

I went to a Fiskars 36 inch axe and a small hatchet for camping use and with the unbreakable handle. I love them. I also keep a Felco 611 medium tree pruning saw with me and it beats the heck out of an axe. You need to make the edge wider, like 1/2 in wide, for better bite and deeper penetration. I have a Michigan pattern and use it a lot too. If you burn wood and I do, you can't beat a hydraulic wood splitter though. Happy chopping.
@onewhitestone7 жыл бұрын
the amazon axe has a longer handle, but a small head, like a hatchet. The forest axe was smaller and had a thinner head. As far as axes go, I would want a bigger head so you can have more weight to power through trees or for splitting wood. The forest axe is more of a hatchet style for camping or trimming tree branches.

Niece review. I liked your application discussion and the mid range angle you filed it to. If you want to fell trees buy two, and hollow grind the cheeks on one and narrow the edge angle on one for better bite. If the steel will can take the narrower edge. Bert

The question you should ask yourself is. Do I want a high quality ax that holds the rest of my life or a cheap ax that you must sharpen each time after use. Great job. I would file it four times as you did. Narrowing the blade geometry and pushing the bevel back about 3/8 of an inch. And after sharpening a little bit of stropping is a must to me.
@fhorst417 жыл бұрын
Without reading the other responses, I can guess that it's already been brought up that the comparison is flawed by reason of the handle length. What I am less sure of is whether or not the profile difference has been discussed. The axe you bought appears to have a more or less American pattern head which widens more quickly from the edge than the GFB. This is the reason why it doesn't bite as well. To increase the performance, you may want to profile the taper to a shallow half moon, deeper in the center than the edges, as the USFG recommends for axes of this pattern. Best of luck.
@realchainrxn5 жыл бұрын
I picked my axe up at the hardware store for like $35, and I am happy with it... I just put an edge on with the shop grinding wheel and haven't had to sharpen it since.. I've used it on multiple landscape jobs. And p.s. I left the varnish alone.... I can always replace the handle with a better one later. They have nice hickory ones right next to the complete axes anyway.

A maul works better for splitting and any cheap one you find will do. I paid less than $15 for a new one at the local hardware store. I got a real nice True Temper axe at the second hand store for $6.

I always used a chainsaw or 2 man crosscut saw to cut down trees and a maul to split with. Usually 10 to 12 cords a year. Used the axe for campfire firewood and lopping small branches after felling the tree. Sawing is much faster for cutting and a maul is much better for splitting.

at the end of the day, you're comparing two very different profiles. The small forest axe is designed for the felling of small trees (hence the thin blade profile - meant for deep cuts when cutting down a tree. Your $30 deal is more of a wedge profile, which is much better suited for splitting. The longer handle and beefier head weight makes this even better. more of a comparison of two different axe types than it is a comparison between two individual axes.

I was taught to file in a repetitive motion holding a straight line . Equal time on each side . Equal time in both directions , paying no attention to the profile. So hold the angle and file both sides 1 time in each direction. 2 filings on each side in different directions. Hope i explained it correctly. This way the center of your cutting edge will be longer the top and bottom shorter, while the file line will be straight or perpendicular to the back of your pole axe. I believe this is called a chisel grind. Then dress edge with a fine stone. If you understand me ,then this axe will bite as well if not better than the expensive one. And still split as well if not better. My Grandfather taught me this,its how i still do it. When i swing my cheap axe it sinks deep in the wood. Hope this helps GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS.

The axe may be fine how ever one thing I have learned about cheaper axes.is there are almost no difference in performance with some even hold their edge with the cheaper steal but when it looses the edge the amount of material you have to take off to bring it back. Add this up of the years and 1/4 of the axe head is gone.

For myself I am not really picky on the head if it can be sharpened but the handle is what I look at it that's the kicker for me I use to make my own now I grab one at the hardware store that's almost what I want then I shape it to my liking. I don't have one axe that isn't older than me I love them but they handles is what I spend most of my time looking for. I can make my own I am lucky enough to have a wood shop but the amount of time it takes doesn't make it worth it anymore so I buy one but make it my own.

Cutting profile of the cheap Axe is wrong. Also, if you cannot shave with it, it's not sharp.......

How did you acquire your farm? You said it was abandoned. Is there some weird abandoned property law in new Hampshire or something?
@aaronwebb70905 жыл бұрын
There is a few ways in which abandoned properties can change hands. You can speak to locals and find the owners and buy it from them, a bank could have possession of the property from an outstanding loan and you could buy it from them or the county/state may take ownership if rates remain unpaid and you can buy it from them. I assume it was one of these circumstances.

I agree. Keep the $30 Amazon for rougher splitting and chores you do not want to damage your small forest axe. Also the profile of the small forest axe is not conducive to “splitting”. It’s too thin

For chopping: The $30 Amazon axe bounces twice off The Maple tree in the first three hits. And that’s after sharpening. For splitting, you take big full swings with the longer Amazon axe, and little quarter swings with the smaller GB small forest axe. Not that I even expected the Small Forest Axe to split those big logs in one swing. The Amazon axe has a legit purpose for splitting wood without being a maul. But are you going to make feather sticks with that Head-heavy chunk? Even choking up, that long handle is going to be awkward. The Small Forest Axe is a good all-a-rounder for camping and bushcraft. It’ll split small rounds, fell small deadwood, break down wood into kindling, pencil lead sticks, and feather sticks. It’s perfect for packing. ...I have the Wetterlings 118, which is A bit heavier, and surprisingly good for splitting bigger and thicker rounds.

The reason you pay 100+$ for a GB is that you never have to buy another axe. The problem is that you will want to buy more GB axes... I have three, damit.

Hahaha!! I fully agree. I started with the GB kubben then had to get the small forest axe then about 2 months ago I got a notification email from my local store....low and behold, I now own their scandi as well. I've also had my eye on the mini hatchet!! We'll see what the future holds.

@@mmironworks80 I started with a small forest axe, then got a large splitting axe that is absolutely great to work with. And finally their double bit with a long handle to use as a felling axe, but mainly because it looks so damn cool 😊
