5-star has quick reaction to play. The 1-star has slow reactions + a slow first step, but I like this closing speed. In college he will get caught up on those linemen if the first step doesn't improve.

I agree the 5 star kid is a lot faster and faster reaction time. I do think the 1 star kid has more explosion in his tackles. Both kids are getting free rides. The 5 Star is also more position versatile. D end or outside backer. I do think the 1 star kid could be a monster in the middle if he can pick up his reaction time.

I think a big factor with the disparity of recruit star rankings in general is the state they play in and team they play for. Competition level is sometimes over/under estimated. Many states are also underated as a whole when it comes to recruiting. JJ Watt was under recruited out of Pewaukee WI and had to walk on at UWM. Years later and he won multiple DPOY in the NFL.

The first guy is more athletic. He seems to be twitchier, faster, has a quicker first step, and more strength in both his upper and lower body. This second guy is making plays. This is a highlight tape so that's what it's going to show. The thing about being a one-star guy and a five star guy is that a lot of the time some of these guys don't get to go to Big Time camps and their coaches don't send their tape out until they're about to be a senior which is always a big mistake in recruiting. I was told that the biggest indicator for a forecasting success in the linebacker position is to look at the number of tackles. If two guys have similar tackle numbers I'm going to take the more athletic guy

A lot of the 5 stars highlights are from up front blocking errors by the O-line giving him free shots at the QB. The 1 star guy is all technique, buzzing feet in the hole and staying square, scrapes well down the LOS, nice closing speed. I’d like to see 40 times and shuttle times between the two.

I think the difference in attacking the line is something that generally comes down to coaching. In my experience and humble opinion, it is an issue easily corrected. The one star def has the athleticism and skill to compete and is underrated for sure. But the 5 star has the "it" factor in his current league. At least in the current moment. As we have all seen, that can change drastically when you go from one level to another (HS to College or College to Pro). Thats why there are so many dud #1 picks.

A couple of things to keep in mind is coaching and scheme. One guy might be coached to attack and the other might be asked to read and react. Constant attacking by your linebackers will lead to your d getting shredded by play action, by the way.

1 star is from Ohio where they don’t have spring practice for high schoolers. And offers come from camps. Star ratings come after offers. If a 3 star gets offers from bama, OSU and Georgia after a camp you can guarantee in a month he’s gonna be a top 150 player

Ok from what I see is they are both similiar size but their are subtle diffferences. 5 star is quicker off the first step and it is noticeable. Yes th e1 star has some speed but I will use the analogy of 0-60 is not as good as the 5 star although both are have good speed. Watch the tape again and one will see the difference of the first step. Another difference is mobility during movement. The 5 star can turn or maneuver quicker during movement. Both are great atheletes and it looks to be that the 1 star is a bit more physical and a bruiser as he B-lines to and through his opponents and can be an amazing piece put in the right scheme. Also both have very good football IQ and awareness and show that they do film study. In short both are great recruits but the 5 star has more utility than the 1 star and can be used in all packages whereas (strictly speaking at the next level) the 1 star can be used in most but not all packages. Loved the vid as many do not do a contrast and compare vid on recruits (first one I have seen) so this is someting that could become a next tier format for content. Kudos!

Five star player I noticed did read the offensive plays a whole lot better and maybe was better prepared for the offense because he seemed to be able to find the openings and was wide open to the backfield of the offense a lot more. And with his speed he was there quick. I sure would like to see what his 40 time is.

While it isn't always the case, the lower ranked guys usually end up being the better player in the end when given the chance. They feel they have things they need to improve on. They work to get better and are often more open to coaching and critique while the higher ranked prospects often (not always), feel they are the best they will ever be and better than anyone else and any coaching or critique is an insult to their talent. I wish football gave the guys that need to grow and develop a little more a chance more often (i.e., Welker, Edelman, etc.)

Never let it running back or quarterback get ahead of steam. That's why you always attack the line of scrimmage and get them in the backfield before they get a chance to get the ball or make a move.

Not saying he’s a 5 star but the other side of it is that you have to get to specific camps to get highly rated. Some kids don’t have the opportunity. Tennessee’s Jalen Hurd was a 4 star. At the end had to go to Nike camp to get 5th star.

Honestly, the play at the line of scrimmage isn't the worst... It's kind of like waiting on a patient RB, if you force him to take that hole you limit the yardage gained for sure, but if you rush in and miss then you not only look like an idiot, but you allow yardage
