In 2023, five Malaysian states exceeded the national average GDP per capita of RM54,612, with Kuala Lumpur leading at RM131,038.
GDP per capita breaks down the state GDP contribution to number of persons in the state.
It is generally regarded as a measure of economic well being.
Labuan had the second highest GDP per capita followed by Penang, Sarawak, and Selangor.
GDP per capita declined in five states, namely Pahang, Terengganu, Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan.
Sabah and Sarawak saw the biggest declines in GDP per capita.
Sabah fell 13 per cent to RM31,147 and Sarawak fell 10 per cent to RM72,411 in 2023.
