Love the video. Love the discussion of art quilts. Love the trip down memory lane and a short stop at the Andy Warhol Museum, especially the room of portraits of Marylin Monroe and Chairman Mao. If one works entirely in monochrome, one might consider a long forgotten piece of technology, the black and white photographic negative, or possibly the color photo negative (both no longer in much use, due to digital photography). Near the end, I come to an old story. Once upon a time a boy went to visit his grandparents. On this visit, he sat in a car with his grandfather and asked, 'Grandpa, how long is eternity?' Grandfather replied, 'About as long as it will take for your grandmother to come out of that fabric store.' (Grandma later said the same about Grandpa wandering around in a hardware store.) Now, I see why a quilting studio needs so much space for storing a stash. Value is one principle of design, along with factors as contrast, unity, and progression. It seems to me that most quilters simply follow a published pattern and most of the quilters who publish patterns work with these principles subconsciously. It is nice to see the next step of quilters starting to find words and discuss these mysteries consciously. Thank you so much for such meaningful discussions on video.

Great video! I'm not a fan of black or brown in my quilts so I'll usually find a deep red or blue or even green or gold as my dark contrast color. So far they've all looked pretty good. I've recently bought some black fabrics with small amounts of red or whatever to use but it sits lonely and unused right now. Eventually I'll find the right project for it. I'm thinking maybe a many color cat quilt, I can give the kitties red bow ties or hats to compliment the cat body color.

Hi Sharon: Thanks for watching. Yes, there is definitely a place for blacks or browns in some quilts. I like brights too, but sometimes a nice brown works well in my projects. I think that kitties with bright bow ties would look amazing!

I wonder if selecting quilt fabric is age-related. Older people seem to like "matchy matchy" jewelry and clothes. The first quilt example, to me, was extremely boring. All the colors blended together with no excitement from color or design play. The second "Crookshank" was much more pleasing and exciting, with complimentary color hues and variation of scale.

I think that colour selection is an individual things with some people liking lots of contrast and others preferring a more blendy look.
