5 Steps for INCREDIBLE paint restoration on vintage mountain bike frame.

In the last vintage mountain bike paint restoration video on the channel there was a lot of questions on the how-to/process for achieving the final result. So here are the 5 steps I take for restoring paint on vintage/retro mountain bikes. The missing step is a trip with the frame to the auto parts store on wyse road that will mix you a can of colour matched paint. A dab here and there on the worst bits will do wonders.

It's amazing what you achieved without re spraying. Depending on the build budget, sand blast, powder coating, and replicated decals might have been easier. Those welds tip the balance toward what you did. IMHO.

That really looks a lot like the Early Cannondale Killer V frames. The larger frames had REALLY big front openings at the down tubes, differing from the smaller frames.

In my experience, because of the limited area that makes up a bike - no huge flat expanses of paint - you can skip the clay bar and do everything by hand and get the same results. For stingy scuff marks I use a magic eraser before the polishing compound begins

Simoniz is a leading USA manufacturer of car care products since 1910. At one time you would simoniz your car when you planned on waxing it. Glad to see you aren’t “rolling” the clay bar. I have used clay to remove overspray on my car after a crappy repair.

Does this process work for multi-colored/paint fade frames? The rubbing compound on your bike had a bunch of red on the applicator pad. Would this then get deposited/smeared onto the other colors? I got a yellow/orange/red/black fade on my frame. and wouldn't want to change the colors. Thanks!

Bloggers gotta blog, I know. But as you acknowledge yourself early on in the video, this frame really needs a thorough strip and respray. On the basis of the rear chainstay alone, I'd say anything less amounts to polishing handrails.

I'd go to a paint shop and have them color match it, then spraying over the parts that are exposed. The chain stays are going to rust over in a short amount of time.
