I love how you use montana's ETOE, Ive been a graffiti artist for 14 years and its my preferred paint for everything! You are reinforcing techniques I have been using for years, good to know I was doing it right from the beginning.

I've used MTN 94 for my motorcycle fairing and seems okay without clear coat so far.. been meaning to re-do them. Any reason to use the product mentioned in the video over MTN 94? if better, I might give that a try.. also have you put 2k clear on your finish? no issues?

Hi Moto, I tried Montana Gold but was getting blobs of paint all over. I noticed that nozzle gradually gets saturated and then it sputters the blobs. Any ideas how to avoid this?
@motowerkz3678 Жыл бұрын
@@IraklisKourtis Hey man, the only way to avoid this honestly is cycling through multiple caps. Caps are super cheap, I would suggest getting a sample pack so you can test a bunch of different styles. Most likely you would want a "blue dot" cap. You want a low pressure cap meant for fading because they have better atomization. This modern day paint from the high end brand is SUPER opaque and thick so it has CRAZY coverage. So after using half a can or so of paint you will get some spatter because the paint is drying in the nozzle as you are spraying. hope that helps. also if you have a local graffiti shop, go support it.

Just finished painting my frame. It took me like 3 or 4 days of sripping the paint and sanding in free time. I used thinner to degrease the aluminium and then a light swipe with isopropilic alcohol to gwt rid of any residue from the thinner, hands, etc. Primed it (1 hand, light sanding and second hand). Let it cure for about 2 hours (fast dry primer in hot Mexico climate), apply a frost hand of white to the front part (faded front to back) let it sit for 15 min, apply secord hand of faded white and a light fade of black from back to front (i left a fade from white pait to grey primer to black paint as an undercoat). Let it sit for about 20 min and apply frost coat of pure metalic red, apply second coat of same metalic red, apply 1st coat of the final colour which is inferno red with flakes, apply second hand of inferno red, apply frost black fade from back to front, apply second fade hand of black in the same way, finally apply a detailing hand of black to get the perfect fade I was looking for and let it cure over night to apply 1st coat of clear coat tomorrow once the day heats up. Untill now, it seems perfect to me almost like a profesional custom paintjob to be honest. All thanks to this channel

Hey man. I just found this video because I was having a helluva time with the clear coat. Bought regular clear without the hardener. I had to sand this clear off multiple times because I kept getting orange peel, it didn’t harden, and not a smooth clear. For myself, I took the bike all the way down to the metal. Sprayed it with primer, sanded with 40 grit. Primed, then sanded with 60. Repeated this process all the way to 2000 grit where I wet sanded 1000, 1500, and 2000. An OG told me that was the best way to do it. Sprayed the color on and wet sanded with 3000. Sprayed color a 2nd time. Looked really good until the clear was put on. Found this video and I’m ordering the clear with the hardener. I think I’ll go 1000 grit after the first coat of clear and then spray the 2nd.

I have a couple of questions about the use of Masking tape and decals/stencils. What length of time do you recommend for laying down the masking tape/decals prior to the next coat and when would you remove them after the next coat. Also is there a special technique to get clean lines and how many coats are too much for when you use decals.
@BatisChannelYT4 жыл бұрын
Instead of using that kind of sandpaper, you should use 3D sandpaper. If you are going to prime the bike you don't have to sand it to P800 because you simply are wasting your time, you have to do it up to 320 if you want or 400 then prime it, and sand it again to P800, then paint it. And you forgot to do or to tell (if you did it behind camera), to degrease the surface, otherwise there could appear defects on the finished bike. Before putting the clear coat, you have to sand it, not after putting the clear coat. Clear coat just has the waves that it has under it. How do I know it? I paint cars. By the way, the result was so good, you did extra work but you got a nice result! Keep it up, and take those as suggestions not as bad comment :)
@TheLineSeeker4 жыл бұрын
Do you sand the colour then with 800?
@BatisChannelYT4 жыл бұрын
@@TheLineSeeker If you have used those flakes you do sand it just to avoid them to get out the surface. But if you don't use flakes you just sand the primer, then paint and then the clear coat. Colour is only sanded if you use flakes or if there are some mistakes on it that you have to solve before the last coat.
@jacobs-h3984 жыл бұрын
At what point in the process do you degrease?
@BatisChannelYT4 жыл бұрын
@@jacobs-h398 Before sanding you clean it just in case to remove particles that could scratch the surface. And once you sand you have to degrease because you will put primer on it. Then it depends on technique, if it is wet/wet you don't have to sand it to paint it, but if you have to sand because you use a different technique, then you have to degrease again.

Hi Martin, absolutely love your work and VERY funny (but informative) video content. You usually say we should comment on what we would like to see next, so here is my wish... Titanium frames are very popular these days, especially in the gravel bike scene. Most of them are sold naked with bare titanium metal, wich I think is fine, but some color looks better in my opinion. I would be very happy to see a video explaining the steps on how to prep and paint a titanium bike frame and what products to use. Especially for a DIY project (spraycans) as I want to try it myself (allready have a vinyl cutter). If a video is not possible any tips commented here is highly appreciated. You did paint an Independent Fabrication Ti frame back in the days, and its something similar I would like to achieve. Some parts bare metal and some painted. Its difficult to find any good information about this online. Thank you and keep up the good work. You are a legend!

Hi Martin. I really enjoy your videos. I painted an aluminum bike frame using Montana Black and used a 2K clearcoat (2 coats). After about 10 days and before I rebuilt the bike I applied some car wax to the fork and it developed some hairline cracks. Do you have any insight as to why this might have happened and what I can do to fix it? Also I've noticed in some of your videos you have used Montana Gold. Is that a better option than Montana Black for bike frames?

That's fantastic. Thank you. Just to clarify, did you sand after every coloures coat as well? Thanks

Man, after working in a bike shop for a few years I feel I have grown paranoid of carbon, yet here he is man handling it no problem. Honestly I was kinda surprised seeing the rivets installed! Looks like a lot of force into that frame at a localized spot. So much stress! Ill stick to working on aluminum for a while haha

Hi, can you paint a bike without removing its old paint, just by sanding it first and after applying your new paint with no primer?

Hi Martin, your videos are so inspiring and you make it sound so easy. I followed your recommendation to paint my kids bike: aluminum frame, degreased, 2 x 2k primer and 3 x Montana gold paint. I want to mask with vinyl stencil and add some graphics but the surface is a bit rough and I am afraid paint will run under the stencil. How do you avoid rough surface with Montana Gold? Should I wet sand before applying the stencil? Any help is appreciated! 🎉

I just don`t paint a rough surface on the initial layer as shown in my spray can videos. That`s all. DIYers are not able to handle a can right and make these mistakes like rough surface.

@@ETOE thank you for taking the time to reply. Highly appreciated. It’s a bit strange, I sanded the primer to a smooth surface. Maybe it’s the way I handled the Montana Gold. Can I sand the base color? It’s a solid non-metallic color.

My first time watching your videos and I'm very impressed - you did a great job explaining and the results are great. Two things it would be good to help people on here with: 1, How do you clean the frame after sanding or between coats/handling? I'm assuming you wash down with water after the sanding and wipe with a rag and some thinners if handled? 2, My personal preference is to start the paint job in some of the really awkward areas as, if you come back to do this later, it's likely to run. After those areas, you can move to the big sweeping movements.

Tack cloth is one wiping medium body shop people use. Also body solvent, but I would check first to see what's compatible with carbon fiber. The song running in the background was perfect, especially the part with the girl vocals. Anybody know the name of it? I won't ask my wife, she might smack me.

So, on a naked frame, primer, sand (I THINK wet sanding with 800 grit?) primer, sand (I THINK wet sanding with 800 grit?), paint, clear coat, sand (wet sanding with 800 grit), clear coat. Wait 1 day between primer coats. 1 day before painting. 1 day before clear coat. 1 day between top coat layers. I believe that you can speed that up if it's warm (like 25 Celcius). I'm in the process of doing this myself with cheap products that seem to work very well so far. Thanks ETOE!

Guten tag Martin, Great video! You do make it look easy. I am doing a paint job for my 9year old boy who is upgrading to a 700 wheel size bike (small Specialized Ruby). I am in the process of sanding back all the pain and I have drilled out the old cable stop/guides. BUT, I cannot get the bits of the rivet from inside the frame. What are your suggestions? Drill slightly bigger holes or remove of the water cage bolts (I have seen another of your videos on that). Because he is a junior and the rules about gearing for junior races in Australia, he will not have a front derailleur so I could use those existing holes (which won't be used again) to drill bigger holes and then patch the hole? Thanks again for all your videos. Danke und Tschuss Julien

Thank you - you are a KZbin DIY Hero.... Question: What grit(s) do you have to use for sanding the primer? Is it just 1 time or 3 times (i.e. 400, 600 and 800 grit)? Much obliged!

Same grit as the toilet paper in Buckingham Palace.

Your work is awesome! I want to do a DIY paint on my old Specialized frame. I want to do a color fade, then mask the logos and paint the whole thing matte black, leaving the logos the color. Should I sand the color before painting the matte black? If yes, before or after adding the stickers?
