Just goes to prove that having the ability to play fast isn't the be all and end all of enjoying how to play the guitar. I really like the concept of not landing on the diatonic notes that are outside of the pentatonic, instead using this as pass through notes. I think that is what is goes wrong when teachers show the concept of using each chord’s underlying pentatonic scale. The approach that you highlighted (i.e., using 1 pentatonic scale, with the additional 2 diatonic notes to add color) is much more forgiving to a person starting out.
