Mark. You don’t cease to amaze me. I recently purchased an HP G2. While it works OK in X-Plane I had several disappointing “What did I get myself into?” moments, after trying to set it up for MSFS. But, with a coffee next to me, this video on my iPad and my PC in front of me, I followed your steps slowly and carefully. Then I put the headset back on again …… WOW!! I hope that WOW properly describes what I saw. And just in time for the PMDG DC-6! When you drop by Toronto, in Canada, I’ll make you a proper cappuccino and you’ll enjoy a slice of my marble cake. Until then, coffee is on its way and as usual, the cake is your responsibility. I am truly thankful for helping me get properly immersed in the totally new aspect of flight simulation, that is VR.

Hi Marc, I'm Michael and live in Switzerland. I fly the MSFS 2020 on a HP OMEN, Intel 10700 and a Nvidia Geforce Rtx 2070 super. Since last week I added a Samsung Odyssey + to the system. Thank you so much for this video! It helped me a LOT! It almost doubled my frames! At the PC and all options in "high" I got 54 FPS!! now. In VR everything works perfect with the Odyssey + and very smooth. Thanks again and all the best for you! Michael

I like your approach to setting OpenXR Render scaling to 100 and tweaking render scaling in the game to something lower. Others have done the opposite which I originally did. I've switched and while I think the results are the same at least OpenXR won't affect other VR games. I7-9700 + 2070Super.

3:23 main thing for smooth experience are 1% low and .1% low, you can have 30 FPS avg and 30 FPS for both 1% and .1% and get a smooth experience, then have 60FPS avg but like 20FPS 1% low and 15FPS .1% low and get way worse experience. Avg FPS isn't all, 1% and .1% lows are extremely important for smoothness and you can monitor them on software like RTSS which comes with MSI Afterburner, I'd recommend it. 4:56 power plan doesn't really affect in any way performance in gaming nor in any heavy app, the system will of course use all of the performance available while running an intensive app. It may help just a bit with opening app faster (not really noticeable tho usually), but gaming wise it won't really give you more FPS nor better 1% and .1% lows or stability. Same goes with game mode, it actually make it worse (like you said) but could help to avoid experiencing some micro-stutters in certain situations, it doesn't really help usually in gaming tho since it kinda doesn't work I guess? 7:10 here Windows won't "decide", it can only use the single GPU you have wether you put one or the other options, this only works on laptops or any PC with both integrated graphics and discrete GPU so that you can consume less energy using the integrated graphics (APU for AMD) for things like Google, office work and so while you use the discrete GPU for apps requiring more performance. If you let Windows decide it will be fine, on a PC with only one GPU tho it doesn't really make any difference at all. 7:35 talking about drivers stick with WHQL version (or whatever works better and without stability issues for you), usually you won't really get any performance from latest drivers nor stability fixes (usually they're just buggy). In some cases of course drivers could improve a lot (like we've seen with latest from AMD for 6xxx series), in that case know it could be buggy but still worth a try imho. 11:20 usually that settings isn't enabled by default. You need to open Windows register (windows key + r, type "regedit" and enter), then on the path write "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Holographic", right click on the "Holographic" folder and select new --> DWORD (32-bit) Value, name the key "FirstRunSucceeded", right click on the key and set value to 1. That's what I had to do since I hadn't it enabled by default. I just wanted to clarify or add a few things to your already great explanation, hoping this could help someone. Nice video, clear and straight to the point!

I’ve been using HPreverb for an almost 1,5 years. Once I got G2, I sold it in two days and kept my G1. For me there were no improvements in lenses in a good way, no matter what everyone says about this. Sweet spot is the same. But I’ve noticed few other things, and because of them I stayed with G1. There are 1) White balance very dramatically shifted to the cooler side- not good for me. Because of the increasing displays brightness glare has become more pronounced, and black color became dark gray. Also I didn’t like the new gasket. So now I’m sticking to my G1 waiting for something else. )) So no improvement for the simulation use with G2 to me)! Thanks for your videos!

Hi Marc, you have been a big help with this video! I have been watching several video’s about VR optimisation for this sim. I had some fair performance above 1500 feet, but below that and on the airfields it was a stuttering mess and giving me black borders in the headset. I have the G1 and a 2080 RTX. Dialing in these setting just made it absolutely smooth and so much more enjoyable! Now the market place in the sim seems interesting to expand the sim where it was no option for me with such bad framerates on airports. I am surprised Asobo hasn’t released something of a guidance video for VR optimization. Thanks for diving in to this Marc and posting this video! Keep up the good work!

Good video Marc. RTX3090 here on Board and what you said: 457.30 best Fps. No need to use Gforce Experience. Better to change the settings in nvidia control panel and ingame. OpenXR best for me: 70% for HP G2 and 100% in game. Reprojection off. I do the opposite way because the Instruments in the A320 are better readable than 100/70. I get 40-45 fps Take care buddy

A good in the middle solution is to use virtual desktop and use your headset in 2D mode. Having a virtual 150 inch screen is quite immersive and the detail is preserved. I call is quasi VR, while not 3D the sheer size of the screen in virtual desktop almost allows you to see depth.

Hi just thought I would add a comment as I have been having issues with motion reprojection using the Hp Reverb G2 but have recently resolved the stuttering this I'm sure will help ! Mixed Reality settings under Framerate, I had it set manually to 90Hz so Motion reprojection was halving that to 45fps. So setting it to Let windows decide( then restart pc), means when fps was so low in flight simulator in VR it automatically selected to run at 60Hz then allowing Motion reprojection to run at locked 30fps. (I think that's how it works, but works for me now so happy days) Mixed reality headset display settings, experience options = BEST VISUAL QUALITY, display resolution = BEST QUALITY, frame rate LET WINDOWS DECIDE. Open XR developer tool settings, use latest preview OpenXR runtime, custom render scale 100%, Motion reprojection ALWAYS ON. MAJOR SETTING TO TURN ON OR WONT WORK=Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. ( tested with this off and fps all over the place up to 45fps, with on then locked to 30fps=smooth flying). WINDOWS GAMEMODE= OFF VARIABLE REFRESH RATE= OFF Nvidia vsync I have, use the 3d application setting. Just keep in mind you will then have to adjust the in game graphics settings and render scale so you will always stay above 30fps like as if it wasn't locked to 30 as any drop even 1 fps below 30 will cause stutter. In game resolution 70 or 60 depending on, if online or offline flying also depending what you set your graphics settings too. Better of having slightly lower settings or resolution and stay at locked 30 than go below. Best think being locked at 30fps with reprojection is that you can have higher in game settings & render scale. Some might not like reprojection but I choose artifacts over stuttering any day. I really hope it helps, as I had given up with VR msfs2020 for a while now, but finally got it to work :) I have also contacted Microsoft about getting a manual way to lock motion reprojection rate, like steam vr is now doing and oculus tray tool, they said they have put it forward to developers.

Hi Mark, I enjoyed your video - I've had my head in these settings for a while now but the last couple of weeks I've finally settled on settings which I'm happy with. Just thought I'd share as I have a similar system, Intel 9900K, Asus 2080Ti and I can get totally smooth frames in VR, I mean it feels as smooth as the portal. I'm using a Reverb G2. The trick was to overclock and use reprojection but I noticed you use reprojection is a very bad way - you need to have much lower OXR render scaling because as you noticed it has a hit on performance. The experience with these settings is phenomenal - it really is - not the sharpest visuals but in the G2 it's pretty decent and the colours are amazing but having it smooth is an incredible experience. Asus ROG Strix 2080Ti using MSI Afterburner overclock by 150Mhz Intel 9900K Overclock all cores 4.7Ghz OXR 65%, runtime preview enabled reprojection always on. MSFS TAA render scaling 70% MSFS Graphics settings all enabled - settings @ Medium MSFS Traffic all off/disabled.

You mentioned you weren't able to measure fps in VR. It's easy. In the OpenXR app, under developer settings there's a checkbox to "display frame timing overlay". That will show it in VR. Here's another tip. Pay more attention to the frametime values than the fps in the overlay. I'm finding that you want to get the frametimes for both the CPU and GPU under 20 ms to have a stutter free experience. I lose too much quality with my 2070 super graphics card when I drive those frametimes under 20 so I'm sitting in mid-20s at the moment and I experience some stuttering but I can live with it. Your 2080Ti might have better success. Good luck and thanks for the videos.

Thanks, i knew all of these but forgot their existence. Biggest impact is rendering resolution, example comparing to 100% against 50%, you have 3 times less pixels to render by machine (but ofcourse you lose 3 times of accurary on image too), so it should be maybe last but most important step when lacking smoothens, everything else should be tweaked first.

Yes it definitely is, for medium res, good value for money. You will need the pc link cable. Oculus charge heavily for this, look to third parties at 30%. If you are only using this with the pc go for the 64gb version as opposed to the more expensive 256gb version. More expensive if using it stand alone for other reasons.

Nice video. Basically the same conclusions I came up with here: forums.flightsimulator.com/t/vr-settings-that-work-for-me-reverb-g2-rtx-2080ti-r3900x/341773 Right now I just fly at OXR 100 / MSFS 100 and just avoid areas that are harder on performance. Couldn't bear the blurriness from 100/70. Especially in planes with digital displays. I can live with slightly degraded external visuals but I need the cockpit to be 100% sharp. It's a pity you cannot change the render scale for those independently (like most other modern flight sims do).
