5 STEPS TO REJUVENATE EXPIRED OLD POTTING SOIL MIX | Revitalize Old Garden Soil

We will start this topic with few simple questions - How Long Does Potting Soil Last? Does the garden soil we use in our containers has an expiry. Does it need to be changed often? So, Today we will learn on this topic and use 5 simple steps to revive or rejuvenate expired or old garden soil.
Todays focus is mainly on unused potting soil and how to recharge it with few simple steps. The regular or the used potting soil with plants growing in it has the necessary activities in it like the beneficial microbial activity and you feeding the plants regularly with fertilizers and so on. So what happens with Unused potting soil. It actually lasts roughly about six months before it degrades in quality with depletion of nutrients and the beneficial microorganisms go into dormancy that is a state of inactivity. But one point to remember: the used soil with plants growing in it should be replaced every one or two years for best results in container gardening.

I sift my old soil thru a screen to remove roots & unwanted debris. Then I just add peat and new potting mix (about 1/3 ratio) and stir it up. Super simple.

This is a good video but adding vinegar to soil is usually a mistake. It may have uses in the garden such as deterring pests and killing weeds far away from plant you want to grow (it can also damage some plants you want). Neem powder is something interesting I learned about, I've only ever used Neem Oil

Old roots etc whixh have not decomposed might be having fungus etc. Hence better remove. To aerate soil u can add dried versions of these stuff like twigs etc.

If plant does of root disease, Better expose the soil to sun light for 1 or 2 days and then reuse.

Storing a potting mix for longer that 6 months or max 1 year not suggested because the beneficial microbes and mycorrhizae fungi need a symbiotic relationship with plant roots for their survival and in turn benefit in nutrient absorption for plant roots. If you store without planting these microbes may die. That’s the explanation. So When you prepare a potting mix use it as soon as possible. If you store it or want to revive it you need to re add the fresh manures needed for plant growth for best results. Thanks!

You could've told to add some mulch on soil. It helps to keep the soil preserved, doesnt let weeds grow, doesn't let water evaporate or let direct sunglight come upon the soil and it adds nutrients slowly as it decays. Mulch is a boon which isn't practiced in India as such

That's a lot of work, in my experience I would just add microbes with something like compost tea and fungis with a myco supplement and top dress with compost and fertilizer. Dead plant matter will be composted in place and you don't disturb your plant roots this way.
