Another thing to consider with delayed/hard shifts. I had a 1996 Nissan Maxima that started shifting from 1st to 2nd late. First it wasn't shifting until 2500 rpm, then 3500, 4500 and eventually 6000! which gave quite a jolt when it did shift! This was a gradual thing over 6 months. The fluid was good so I just assumed this old car was on its way out. Then one day it wouldn't shift at all so I thought well that's it. But a few hours later I started the car and the check engine light was on and the Overdrive light was flashing. I got codes from both the ECU and the transmission computer: bad throttle position sensor. A $70 part later and my transmission was shifting like it was brand new and lasted for years without issue. Unbelievable.
@muscleman369 Жыл бұрын
I was wondering if the tps sensor would throw off my transmission. Its as if my torque converter isn't locking up, rpm is free to jump up and down with the flick of the pedal which isn't right and the overdrive won't freaking engage... Slowly buy surely it stopped shifting into overdrive.. Freaking annoying as freaaaakk I miss my damn manual trans.
@ryans413 Жыл бұрын
Some cars also use the MAF sensor to determine shifts by looking at how much air volume is going into the engine. The TCM computer looks at that as well as the TPS to determine a soft shift.

One bit I'd add for a delayed or hard shift. The internal problem could be the check balls in the valve body are worn and get partially stuck in their respective holes. This delays the shift mechanically, until the flow or pressure overcomes the stuck ball, moving it and completing the gear change.

I have an '07 SUV that I bought in 2013. I did a "power flush and fill" (PS - don't do this) shortly after I bought it, and I waited 5 years before I replaced it. I had no issues with transmission or shifting in that time, I just want to point out...I just reached the 5 year mark and knew it was time to look at it again. Starting then, I just do a manual drain and fill myself. Costs me less than $100 a year to do, and yes, I do it annually now (the first two years after I did every 6 months). Bought my ride at around 187K, and she is almost at 460K now and still running like a champ. I did the shop "power flush and fill" only the one time and won't do it again because I have heard some horrible stories about the process causing more issues than it hopes to resolve. I digress. The procedure I use now is simple: - Wait until the engine is at ambient temp (usually I park it overnight and do this the next day) - Pull the dipstick out to allow flow - Remove the drain plug and allow it to bleed out into a pan, checking the color of the fluid or looking for particles/objects - Allow it to bleed til a slow drip - Replace the plug after wiping and checking for debris (I add a squeezable sealant to the threads only) - Using an old oil container for discarded fluid, see how much fluid came out (roughly) and replace that amount plus one "gulp" - Start the vehicle and allow each gear to be engaged for 30 seconds down the tree then back up the tree - Check level (this is a do or don't if you have no issues prior) - Take it for a slow ride at start/stop conditions in town then on to the highway for all gears The reason I wait til it reaches ambient temps is because the fluid I will be using to replace is at ambient, and if I drain when hot, the amount will be off radically. Always drain when it's at ambient temp. I must be doing something right because she still runs like a champ, as I have mentioned. When I do my annual bleed, the fluid that comes out is still very red in color. Not new red, but still very see through and not at all discolored. The key to a happy vehicle is routine maintenance. I'm gonna love watching her roll over to 500K and beyond. In this day and age that is almost unheard of. Spend $100 now or spend thousands later. Pretty simple economics.

Good advice for draining anything on your car. Remive the fill cap/bolt/whatever first. You'll know you can fill it up when your done and it will drain faster and more thoroughly. Some transmissions use the same hole for drain and fill and you need special tools to service them.

@@SocialPerspective101 the 5 years service maybe conservative but even without the milage ATF fluid has additives that brake down with age and foreign particles e. g. In my limited experience, Japanese cars with CVTs can have very specific and non-obvious procedures for checking the transmission fluid level - for example, an older Nissan/Jatco unit which you're supposed to check with the engine running, or a Honda CVT which you have to check 60-90 seconds after turning the engine off. I can see why newer transmissions go with the overflow type fill ports - they're pretty foolproof.

Checking at a certain temperature is with all transmissions though… One of the things that’s not said to the average DIY’er that can cause overfilling easily. How long did you drive it like that? Or did you fix it right away? My car started showing signs of transmission issues over a month ago. The RPMs would rev up. Once I'm over 30 MPH, it wouldn't jerk or rev up. My ex checked the fluid and said it was low. I do not have a dipstick, so he stuck his pinky in the port to check it. I added transmission stop leak. Because when I was parked in the parking lot, there was brown fluid underneath my vehicle. It seemed to run better a week after, but only a few times of driving it. I brought it to an auto shop and they put a quart of transmission fluid in it for me. I don't think the kid that did that for me checked it himself. My ex checked it the next day and he said it was dry. He added two quarts. Well, now it's making a very loud whining sound. I have checked after driving it to see if there's fluid under my vehicle. When it started, the D4 was blinking and engine light came off at the same time. There were 6 codes which are about transmission related and non transmission related as well. I looked it up and i read that it’s a transmission problem. People have said that once I replaced the transmission, all those codes would go away. I was really surprised what happened. The car is a B7 '08 A4 S Line. The code is P0706 trans range sensor/performance. I'm in So Cal. Are you accepting new clients? I could really use help with this, thanks!

Enjoyed your video once again and I'm glad you're back to healthy again. I have a question for you, we have a 2006 Lexus RX330. And the adapted lights light came on the dash and the lights sometimes work and sometimes don't and sometimes the light goes out and the light works the headlights that is. What would be causing this problem?

Always great advice. But this is one more thing I won't have to worry about after I switch to an EV. Just have to wait for my '98 LS400 to die. Might be a while.

Trailblazer 03 4.2L ,at eninge cold dipstick reads good level, engine warms up , dipstick is completely dry. Checked the coolant and not mixing there, checked the transfer case 4x4 not mixing there. Where can this fluid be going? So far I added a lot more trans fluid, around hot levels on dipstick when engine is cold and when it drives lowers down to the cold mark.

did you figure out your transmission dipstick on your 03 TB? When you say "engine cold dipstick reads" - and then "dipstick when engine is cold and when it drives it lowers" - does that mean your "cold read" is with the engine OFF? It has to be idling at least for the cold reading so the ATF sucks back - actually you have to drive it to activate the torque converter to suck it in. So a cold read still requires driving it.

Why does my fluid go way over the top hot mark when engine is cold but just in between the hot marks when engine is hot?

Yeah I've encountered that same issue with a mechanic. They told me need new transmission. Cost around 700.. They didn't check the car just a professional assessment.😂😅 Anyways after putting in new atf the car works fine.😂

Thanks a lot for all the information brother ..that's why I decided to subscribe to your channel long time ago...first things first...why to take your car to a transmission shop....people should check transmission fluid level first ....if is low refilling won't hurt and can save you thousands of dollars

What are the symptoms of a transmission Cooler Line leak? What is the average cost to repair? Also, can you drive with this problem if the leak is small ,or just beginning? Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou. Hope your feeling better!!

Maybe you'll see this question I hope. I have a 2014 BMW X1 I'm working on. Everything seems to be good with it other than it making a consistent constant thumping noise in sequence as to a heartbeat and it only does it when the engine is up to operating temps. It continues to do this until you turn the car off. Just wondering cause I have a new water pump and I don't think it's the cooling system. Not sure but I cannot seem to figure it out.

"Sealed transmissions" should be f-ing outlawed. I get pissed having to lift and get under a car just to check the trans fluid. Places used to charge just $40 to do it, but now everyone wants $75 or more to put the car on a rack, and now I'm thinking twice.

My 2007 Honda CRV was making a whistling sound after driving it. Checked my fluids and my ATF fluid was low. Drove it yesterday and the sound was there but slightly lower. Drove it today and didn’t notice any whistling sound. Does it take a while of driving before it goes away completely?Also it whistled while i revved the engine in park with steering wheel straight, but didn’t whistle today.Thank you for your time.

Ok, so I have a 2017 Silverado 1500 (6l80 transmission). It's not low on fluid, the fluid is still pink, and it upshifts very smoothly through all the gears. But it has a slight clunk when downshifting from 2nd to 1st. I've also noticed a slight clunk if say I'm doing 60mph and have to brake quick the I accelerate heavy directly afterwards. It only does this when the temp is up to operating temp (185 to 194dgrs) and sometimes it doesn't do it at all. Any advice? Again it seems to shift very well when it's upshifting.

Thank you for your video I have a 2006 magnum 2.7 l rear wheel drive and it’s got a sealed transmission but I’m unsure if that is the same no because my engine blew when getting repair work done in a shop. 3engines later they put in a 2.7l from a 2008 Chrysler 300 would it still have a sealed transmission?

In a 2013 Honda Civic, it has never had a trans oil change and it has almost 90 k miles, should the trans oil and filter be changed, will it damage the trans?
@youwantme302 жыл бұрын
It won't damage it yet but u should change the tranny fluid like every 30-40k. Keep it on that schedule and you'll never have any issues

It currently has more than 190K miles on it and still going strong. Do you have a shop in CA? Just wanted to say Hi in person lol
