There have been a lot of rumours and plenty of speculation recently about 343 Industries and what’s going to happen to the Halo franchise and Halo Infinite moving forward.
Will a new team at 343 Industries be in charge of the Halo series direction? Will the Slipspace engine still be used, or will Unreal Engine be the number one choice from here on out? And is it possible that Halo Infinite's concept could be ditched altogether, despite 343 stating that it was meant to be the foundation upon which a ten-year plan for Halo was built?
I don’t comment on this sort of thing, and I ain’t gonna start now, but all this chitter chatter did get me thinking about Halo Infinite and what I’d like from a sequel. So, in this video, I've decided to talk about the five things I’d love to see carried over from that game, five things I wasn’t such a fan of, and five things I think need to be changed.

The two main problems I had with Infinite's campaign were the story and the open world: 1. Infinite's story feels like a second/third act with a missing first/second act. There are little to no events linking the start of Infinite to the end of 5, so you are left asking a multitude of questions: - What happened to the Promethans, Guardians, Cortana/the other AIs, and the Covenant Remnants? - Why are the Banished at Zeta Halo and why do they want this ring specifically? - What happened to the Infinity, Lasky, Locke and Osiris, Blue Team, all the other spartan 4s? - What is the status of Earth, Sanghelious, the UNSC, and The Swords of Sanghelious? And the list goes on. While halo 4 and 5 had been crazy train of events, they should have at least been given a clear/solid conclusion. Also the Banished don't have any clear motives which open even more questions, and we still don't even know who the Harbinger and The Endless are. The problem is most of these questions are probably answered in the books, which has been a problem with 343's writing. 2. The open world is very mediocre. I would argue that the grapple shot gives a little too much freedom to the point were you don't even need vehicles to traverse the terrain effectively, and combine that with how restrictive Infinite's open world is to vehicle combat, vehicles are pretty much useless. The lack of set peice events and repetitive tasks make the game's levels very forgettable. The Banished in Infinite feel like reskinned Covenant and are nothing like the merciless/threating force they were in Halo Wars 2 (Infinite doesn't even have any of the unique/wild Banished vehicles and enemies). Even with the open world formula there are many was the Banished could have been done better in Infinite. Also it came with many of the downsides to having open world, with it only taking place on the 5% of the ring that is broken. I still think it would have been better if Infinite's campaign was still linear but had open world sections on different parts of zeta halo, that after completing the game you could backtrack/fast travel to.

On that last point, rescuing named characters (Spartans, ODSTs, Elites) and being able to call them as part of your fireteam would be amaźing. Even better,if they can dynamically die in-game to add an element of "keep your favs alive" would be so cool. This way you can have your chief focused story, but still have all the fan favourites throughout the campaign

Very good points as always. The rage fueled videos on infinites short comings are fun but nothing gets better if we don't use constructive feedback to find ways to improve

@@Seriona1 there is no resealable explanation for them to exist. Why contain them when just a few of them can take over the galaxy. That’s far too much risk

The problem with the music/soundtrack is that they aren’t played properly [example] you be randomly swinging like spider man and then a up beat song kicks in then you reach the fight and the song stops or it transition into a slower song

I should have mentioned this really as it was a real bug bear of mine during that campaign that I'd completely forgotten about. The amount of times a track would kick in halfway through a battle at random or stop during an encounter was crazy. Heard 20-30 seconds of different songs so many times 😂

I enjoyed Halo Infinite's campaign a lot. I'm not the best Halo player in the world, and I found playing through on Heroic to be challenging, but not overly difficult due to the multitude of ways to engage your enemies. If I had to sum up the content outside the main story in one word, it would be: monotonous. I did enjoy completing the challenges to upgrade what equipment/vehicles you can obtain in the FOBs, but outside that there wasn't an awful lot to do. It would have been awesome if the Banished launched counterattacks and tried to take back FOBs, or if the UNSC were already trying to take control of an area, then you could drop in and lend a hand. With an open world there is literally endless potential, which just hasn't been utilised. Ultimatelt I agree with 99% of the points you raised in the video, Ben. Except that I thought the music in Halo 4 was absolutely brilliant 🤣.

Ha I'll take 99% - couple of other people have also pulled me up on the Halo 4 music opinion as well. Agree regarding the open world too, monotonous is exactly the word. A lot of squandered potential there.

Although the campaign is very repetitive, i thought it was super fun, but my favourite thing was going on road trips with marinesin razor backs while listening to road trip playlists

I'll be honest, we are long overdue for the Flood to return. The threat of the Flood was at the core of the original trilogy. We haven't seen them in far too long

I really wanted open world Flood stuff in Infinite but I fear they may be out the series for a little while yet. Can't see the focus being on anything other than the Endless for the next game or two.

I personally prefer the linear old school Halo campaigns much more. The open world in Infinite I didn’t particularly like for reasons you stated, and also because it also felt kinda small and “boxed in” and I would have loved if there was different biomes, and maybe even dynamic weather as they talked about implementing, but probably ain’t gonna happen. I’m gonna play it in coop once it is possible, but I honestly would rather replay the Bungie games. Would also love if the graphics would be more like Halo 3. I do have some hope that they will learn from their mistakes, and now that they finally got the gameplay down, I think it is a possibility the next game can top infinite.

I agree 100%. Please, don't give us another open-world Halo. It seemed like a good idea at first but it doesn't work. Halo is built on the different biomes and insane adventures you go on -- this can't be done in an open-world game, it just can't

I personally wouldn't mind another open world, if it acted as a hub of sorts for more traditional missions. So, you can explore a chunk, or chunks, of Zeta Halo for more open form content but are then shepherded by pelican or similar to different parts of the ring for more linear levels. Gives the best of both worlds, I think.

my biggest issue was it felt empty and not living like other open world games , and the lack of variety in the enviroments was disapointing.

Another day, another banger by Ben. Halo infinite brought us back to the good old days to Bungie days ….but they muffed it up so bad. Haven’t played the campaign yet, but I have hope for it. -Andrew

Cheers Andrew mate - it's definitely worth trying as it's by no means and bad experience and the gameplay is great. But it does have some very obvious shortcomings I'd like to see addressed. 343 are so close to making something that's actually amazing, I'm sure of it. Sort of, maybe.

Here is what my expereince on Halo Gaurdians and Infinite Ranked Doubles is: 1st Game: I get the first shot on his head and don't miss him once after repeatedly firing on him, but he kills me in 2 shots. My partner says he can not hit anything ! We lose big time ! 2nd Game: I am running around slaying everything that moves. They are shooting at me. I win every gunfight. I feel sorry for them. They are clearly at the disatvantage-very unfair!!! 3rd Game: Games starts and a player or both players on other team leave. 4th Game: I get a noob partner and we get distroyed. I can't carry him. 5th Game: The game seams balanced and we bearly win. Then it REPEATS. I have been playing Halo for 22 years and have played champions in Gaurdians and beat them. I am presently stuck in the ranking of silver due to the servers and the DESYNC !!!!!!

Too much rage and not objectivity around I agree. Infinite is by no means perfect, in fact it's missing a lot of things that make Halo what it is, but to say it's an absolutely terrible game is too much. There's still plenty of good stuff in there.

The most important thing 343 should be working on is (desync) in halo infinite. I looked up where the servers are for halo infinite yesterday and they are all very far from me. I'm in Florida. I have 2 ping fiber internet and I am very tired of my shots not registering. Is a level battle field too much to expect ??? This is 2022 and it is ridiculous ! As long as (desync) is an issue in halo infinite, the ranking system is meaningless and the multiplayer is so lopsided that the joy of playing is being sucked out of it !!!

I've no idea, guessing that might have been when 343 announced that splitscreen coop was cancelled. Not sure of the exact date that happened, but think it was around that time.

I mean, for be the first "open world" for the Halo Franchise wasn't that bad, they have a lot to learn to be a better experience, I love that the cinematic are in game, is very inmersive, and the art direction is the best in the trilogy.

There are definitely things to like about and I really feel like they've got a good foundation upon which they could build their best game yet. But then I say that every time 343 release a game, so who knows haha.

Thanks for the video as always! Pretty much agree here. Very thoughtful critique, I hope 343 take it to heart. I think a lot of the problems connected to equipment and open world is connected. For instance: the combination of open world and having several persistently makes it impossible for the level/campaign designers to design specific experiences around specific abilities. The bullfrogs you referenced from Reach is a good example. That kind of specific level design is impossible in Infinite. That severely limits what kind of available experiences there. Not to mention the tedium of choosing equipment. Reach and 3 elegantly solves this by only allowing a single kind of equipment at a time. It’s not a coincidence that Infinites MP work so well, thoI think for campaign maybe something closer to Reach would be better. Perhaps they could simply design equipment that have everything from a couple of uses to Infinite. Or maybe entering a certain area would disable certain equipment. Combined with discrete missions (not open world) this would do wonders, I think. As for the open world: as much fun as I’ve had exploring it, I don’t see what it adds that I couldn’t have in traditional, but massive levels! I think Pelican Down is a good example here. I love that level. It has a lot of the fun of the open world, *but* it is a discrete level. I think it’s much easier for level designers to do a good job with creating good levels (considering the kind of game Halo is) with discrete missions. Oh, and one more thing: I truly think some of your criticism to a certain extent can be explained by maybe taking the whole inspired by CE thing too far. Perhaps it’s shared flaws is a result of both having had a longish yet tough development. The cinematics reminded me a lot of CE for example. Might be that’s why, despite its flaws, it’s among the top 3 favourite Halo of mine. Oh, and the multiplayer? For me, it’s nigh perfect. It’s so fun. I “only” have a little over 1000 games myself, but I’ve probably been the most active gamer I’ve been in the last decade.

No wozzas Torb mate! Can see where you're coming from with the equipment, limiting things is the best way to go I think. My dream is that the grapple shot, if it's included in the next game, becomes a permanent equip with its own button. That way, other equipment can be managed in a similar manner to what you've suggested, while the grapple shot can always be taken into account in terms of level design as it's always going to be used. For the open world, I'd like to see a Zeta Halo type environment paired with linear mission you're ferried to by pelican or similar. That way, lots of biomes, set pieces and all that other Halo goodness from the traditional campaigns can be included without having to compromise because of the open world. Or they could just create a more linear campaign like the older ones with larger areas to traverse, fine with that too! The multiplayer is incredible but I'm a ranked player mainly and it feels like its completely dead nowadays. Often takes 5-10 minutes to find a game, which is not ideal...

@@BenPlaysGames I think always having the grapple is still seriously awful to the level design. There's so much that you can just circumvent with it, making it hard to design obstacles and the like. I think it'd work *much* better if it's availability varied. As for multiplayer, I prefer casual modes and BTB has been relatively easy to get into still. But yeah, it does seem like ranked is struggling a bit.

In response to the static world, it would be good to add dynamic bases. Specific locations across the map that will have a banished outpost pop up, then if not dealt with it slowly grows until it reaches a certain size. When they reach different sizes different challenges will be added like a generic boss enemy, or a rescue quest. If they didn't show up on the map until you found it or it reached a certain size then that would be great.

in response to the flood infestation, you should really look at Space Rangers (2002) for inspiration. Because they actually do that in that game. I wish more games did things like that.

I’m still surprised they didn’t add anything like roaming scarabs or krakens into the open world. Even though I found the kraken in halo 5 a bit underwhelming, seeing a giant roaming tower in an open world that you could take down or even take control of would be cool.

One very good thing infinite's campaign has brought is that the next campaign will probably be a banger. Seeing 343 finally getting their shit together as far as gameplay goes while also I introducing a new faction we know next to nothing about is really exciting

The most disappointing part of Halo Infinite's Campaign for me was that you never actually fought the Endless. Maybe this was the result of a rush-job but I am actually quite pleased Halo Infinite has a new race of creatures to show us, instead of reusing the Flood for the 7th time, but the climax of Halo Infinite is just a Cliffhanger, and we are going to be hanging there for a long-ass time. Its not a good way to introduce a new threat purely though tell, and no show.

The flood need to be part of the story and the flood was only used for 3 mainline games plus zeta halo has a very huge history with the flood

@@garylococo2401 Yeah lets just repeat story arcs all over again. This is uncreative, especially since all mysteries surrounding the Flood have been answered. The Endless on the other hand are nothing but mysteries and have massive potential.

12:50 I know for a fact that in the Campaign overview video they released a few weeks before it came out, the player was able to dodge while the dropwall was set, implying that we used to be able to have hotkeys for immediate use at some point.

I have stated before that Halo Infinite would have benefited from a 3 hr or so prologue. This prologue would feature Cortana and her Created promethean forces heavily. The destruction of Dosiac and downfall of Cortana would occur during this hypothetical prologue. After the prologue, the prometheans would become a supplementary enemy that are antagonistic to both UNSC and Banished forces.

Completely agree. I've said in the past that Halo Infinite feels like a middle that is missing a beginning and end - you miss all the stuff with Cortana, the Created, the Infinity etc prior to start of the game and then it ends just as it should be introducing the Endless and letting us taken them on for a bit.

@@BenPlaysGames I would like to add that Halo Infinite overly distanced itself from its predecessors Halo 4 and 5. Neither of those titles are anywhere near as terrible as many reactionary KZbinrs make them out to be. The plot trends from Halo 5 could have been more clearly resolved in Infinite. Characters such as Lasky, Halsey, Locke, Rolland etc [and even Cortana] didn’t need to be removed or side casted. I wanted to overthrow Cortana and the created through gameplay, see the guardians defeated etc. Cutting a lot of weapons from 5 hurt Infinite’s sandbox. I frankly surprised that fan favourite and classic weapons were cut to make room for the situational weapons of Infinite. Even enemies like the Promethean Knight, Soldier and Grunt Goblin would work well in the open world sandbox due to their mobility and ability to pursue the player. As for story. Halo Infinite story was good not great. I honestly think the Harbinger should have not been killed off. She wasn’t a true villain, nor is made clear why here kind is so dangerous. The mysterious force has already been done before in the Halo-series. I think further exploring the Banished, and introducing human enemies would have been a better way to evolve the series narrative going forward. The Endless are just another ancient enemy awaking trope that the series has done twice before.

Great points, Ben. It'd be so nice if you could have a dev react to this and explain why an idea might or might not work, give honest feedback as a dev to our honest feedback as players. For all their sins, Techland is a dev I've actually seen operate this way recently.

As someone who works in corporate comms, they was 343 handle things is, to me, absolutely crazy. Too many big promises with small payoffs and just a general lack of cohesiveness across everything.

Good video but for honest discussion I have to say that I think a completely linear halo campaign for the next one would feel like a downgrade missions like the sequence the towers intro and pelican down benefit more from the ability to travel around and gather your arsenal before descending on the banished. A mix of Linear missions and open ended objectives will give the best results as infinites campaign already does but I would just include more unique gameplay environments. For example Repository is supposed to go into a forerunner factory and I think it needed more machines and factory like objects to make it really stand as its own unique encounter maybe throwing sentinel enforcers in there would help. Halo isn't setpeice driven as combat evolved wasn't good for set peices but for good theming because even if TR is called a sniping mission you can still drop the sniper rifle a go as you want halo is it's weakest when it's too focused on setpeice like the space missions and falcon gunner sections in reach and 4.

My dream for Infinite was that there was an open world with some levels set there, and optional stuff to do, but then for some missions you maybe had to catch a pelican somewhere or similar, to different areas which were more in the traditional linear Halo style. That way, you get the best of both worlds.

Brutes were soporifically repetitive in Halo 3 by Bungie. We can critique every Halo game down to the most minute details. Infinite had a great campaign. The lack of advertised fauna and repetitive environments are issues, but the gameplay was excellent, so I hardly cared.

It would've been nice to at least encounter a camp of live spartans as side characters and having them die thru the missions for more impact as opposed to just finding them already dead

I don't see them ditching halo infinite plus certain affinity said they were working on something with halo infinite plus forge next month for me wat I want in the next campaign is more bioems and the flood to be added to the story since it would make sense for zeta halo also I want this game to be for Xbox series x and s only no Xbox one make a next Gen experience

Yes and no. All drums are percussion but not all percussion are drums is the best way to describe the difference I guess. Triangles, maracas etc etc are also percussion.

Simply cannot agree with you about "buttery smooth" gameplay in multi. Aiming on controller is not right, acceleration and aim assist does not work in an intuitive way and actually has been demonstrated to work in a completely different way than previous Halo games. This is something that needs fixed or I simply can't play Infinite and have fun.

Fair play, I've actually found the aiming to be just fine but I've not really looked into it much. There will be a separate multiplayer video coming in the next days, so will definitely be addressing that side of the game separately.

I personally like the open world content but I disliked how it disrupted the campaign and ruined the pacing for me in the first half. This was made worse with the spartan cores. In order to update the equipment and shields I had to spend time in the open world to get the spartan cores. This was a problem for me because I wanted to go through the campaign efficiently going from level to level, but I was forced to engage with the open world in between the levels. I wish that they had made earning spartan cores an XP based system instead, where you get XP for kills and earning metals with spartan cores working like skill points. This would have allowed people like me to play the story all the way through without having to play side content.

It's a failure as competitive game anyway as it doesn't really work very well and the player base has shrunk too much already. I know they're doing the whole HCS thing, but that won't last longer than another year or so in its current form I'd say. Not enough interest and all momentum has gone.

My big hope for Infinite was that the open world could easily be expanded upon compared to a traditional campaign. Just by chucking in a new NPC with a short mission here or there every so often, they could have really integrated a sort of rolling content system.

I thought the campaign was good. Jumping off the spire with halo music playing and landing in the pelican was peak halo. But the dry bones multiplayer and zero custom games or forge left this game feeling meh. They really could’ve taken over the video game industry for the next 10 years if it was anything close to what they made halo reach

I thought the campaign was a masterful return to the Halo of old. I get that toxic players need a safe space in multiplayer for them to compensate for their real-world shortcomings, and that part of the game is lacking. But the whole game is too often poorly judged solely based on the toxic playground of multiplayer.

Ben, we've (Halo fans) been saying "Maybe 343i will learn from their mistakes and do better in the next game" since Halo 4 came out. It's been over a decade. Halo has been in a bad way for longer than it's glory days lasted at this point. There's nothing wrong with trying to be optimistic, but man at some point we just gotta call a spade a spade.

I always forget that it's been 12 years since the last truly excellent Halo game released. That is a brutally long time, nearly two entire generations of consoles in terms of length. Now I've written that out, I wonder whether perhaps I'm simply an eternal optimist 🙈

Halo 5 was worse than 4. And somehow Infinite is worse than 5. It’s actually impressive how 343 had no story planned, just like the Disney Star Wars trilogy. Halo 5 didn’t do anything to expand upon halo 4, and Infinite did nothing to expand upon 5.

Halo 4s soundtrack? Forgetible? Yeah no mate. I agree with you on msny things but halo infinites soundtrack is the most forgetible simply because its really just a remix of soundtracks from ce. In general I must say that, all things considered, halo infinite is less of a halo game with an open world setting (like odst) and more of an open world game with a classic halo skin slapped on it to please the oldschool gamers and hardcore fanboys.

My LARGEST problem with Infinite? THE LACK OF A STORY. Chief power napped through a whole local war, and all you do in the game is listen to budget Cortana endlessly blab and the pilots nervous whining, and the Banished just feel like power rangers villains that say big scary things and then do nothing.

Infinites gameplay is buttery smooth? I love the game but the multiplayer is broken AF because of desync 😭😭 I’m suffering as a competitive player getting blank melees and shots all the time.

Thanks dude! To be fair to Halo 4's soundtrack, there's the occasional track I enjoyed (Wreckage is a particular favourite) but on the whole, for me, it just wasn't as memorable as those which came before.

Until LAG and DESYNC are rectified the ranks are fake and so are these PROS. The world has never seen who the real best of the best are. This game is so screwed up for many people like me who are not in the right geographical location to the servers, I guess? THE FUN IS BEING TOTALLY SUCKED OUT, 343 !!!

Sorry, the most important thing 343 should be working on is (desync) in halo infinite. I looked up where the servers are for halo infinite yesterday and they are all very far from me. I'm in Florida. I have 2 ping fiber internet and I am very tired of my shots not registering. Is a level battle field too much to expect ??? This is 2022 and it is ridiculous ! As long as (desync) is an issue in halo infinite, the ranking system is meaningless and the multiplayer is so lopsided that the joy of playing is being sucked out of it !!!
