My favorite time in this game was hunting for a riddle underground. It was one of the question marks and I just couldn't figure out how to solve it. This happened to be one of the final ones for me to get and after 30 minutes of walking around I finally went online to get the answer. Right after solving it for the first time the Riddler says "What!!! Are you looking online for the answers" or something to that effect. That line totally freaked me out.

so so so well put. asylum feels so established and real, like it has a full rich history with an insane amount of details in it that makes you at the very least appreciate the developers for trying to make this island as fully formed as possible. although city has my heart, the setting didnt feel as rich and it really makes me appreciate the little details and the genious layout of asylum more. i think asylum best balances in its environment as seeming real AND being a fun video game environment

Hey, about the time line, my understanding is this: Origins is about 2 years into Batman's career, 8 years later is asylum, so that's close to 10 years. One year later is City then next year is Knight. All told, roughly 12/13 years by end of Knight. Hope this helps :)

My favorite part of this game (and a big reason that it’s my fav in the series) is the real comic book in motion feel to it. The sequels had a very realistic look to them. They looked great, but I always miss that comic book, ultra muscular, ludicrously large moon, over exaggerated look. Also, I really appreciate the spoiler warning. I don’t think most ppl need it, but it’s a nice gesture that takes 2 seconds to include.

I also very much enjoyed the style to the game. I think a little bit of it is lost in the return to Arkham that I was recording footage from, but it still shines through for the most part. I need to repick up my old copies of the game, because I would record these footages on PC butit's weird my PC can play the game is just fine, but a lot of the times if I try to record with software while playing at it slows it down. It gets to the point where when Scarecrow reveals Bruce Wayne is Batman Riddler doesn't believe it. He had a theory that Batman was a criminal who robbed the criminals he captured and bribed Gordon to look the other way. He told Dr Young that theory in his Asylum interview tapes. So when he's proven wrong he goes into denial and convinces himself it was a trick to make him look stupid rather than admit he was wrong.

When friends ask me which Arkham game they should play if only one of them, this one and Origins top the list; the latter because of refined ArkCity gameplay combined with a more 'lore-introduction' story. But this one has such a concentrated focus, with Halloween haunted-house atmospherics. This focus manifests in a subtle difference between this game and the others in the combat, too, due to being able to see better what's going on, and appreciate the model details better (despite this naturally having the worst models relatively). More than any of the other Arkham games, this game is about conquering fear by being stronger than fear. This situation would be nightmarishly bad for anyone else -- IS nightmarishly bad for everyone else (it's a near total party-wipe for the good guys by the end) -- is even literally nightmarish going against Scarecrow. But you're the Batman. You scare monsters. And if they aren't quite scared of you yet, they should be. You're the alien (albeit a benevolent one who cares about his enemies), creeping around in the Nostromo's air ducts, picking them off. _And they know it!_ None of the other games nail that as well as Ark1.

About Batman being Batman only 12 years into Arkham Knight: In The Dark Knight Returns, he retired after Jason was murdered. At that time, Bruce was 45. That would mean, that he was only around 15 years into being Batman. So maybe Arkham series got the idea from TDKR.
@DegenerateJay
@DegenerateJay 5 жыл бұрын
I mean the thing is in year one he was actually 25, and probably approaching 26. So when he retired after Jason's death, which was also sort of spurred by the anti-hero sentiment of that continuity at the time, because they were essentially starting to push back against vigilantism partially because of Batman's brutality and other things going on, he would have been Batman for 19 or 20 years. I mean it's not that much longer but it's at least a decent run.

One of the things I really loved about the Arkham series is riddler's character. It is so damn cool How much he changes. In origins, which is the beginning. He is just so calm, he underestimated batman, he didn't take him seriously and he was a normal guy, he didn't get angry when he found those nigma packs. He thought he was better. He didn't face batman, he wasn't the riddler yet. Then he was obsessed and he wanted to prove that he is better than batman. In asylum he wasn't quite insane yet and he wasn't so angry. But as you find riddles he just says that it was easy and all that stuff. And when you beat him. He was surprised and he said that your cheating and stuff. Then in city he was like obsessed and he wanted revenge bad and he was getting more insane and he took hostages and all that stuff. He just wanted to beat batman. In knight he was at his peak, literally, he was mad that he couldn't beat batman, saying he is his true nemesis. He was so insane and wanted to beat riddler badly.

Eh. I'd say the "Riddler sucking" backlash came ten seconds after we beat the Riddler in this game, when we realize we've been suckered by the devs into pointlessly wasting time going after his trophies. I remember playing this the first time at release, wondering -- where is this going? Listening to the Riddler slowly lose his arrogant composure (though never his arrogance) was entertaining but what was the end supposed to be? And having gone to a lot of trouble to backtrack, and to find the stuff; and then to discover I was SUPPOSED TO PICK UP THE MAPS, TOO in order to beat him, even though that was totally counter-intuitive... okay, more backtracking when I just want to get to the end of the game, but I've sunk in the costs now in defeating the Riddler so I'm going to get this done as the next to last thing... ...and then... that's it? That's all? Something Oracle could and would have done ANYWAY just from having the Riddler taunt you enough regardless of what you did?? That was the only time I was angry at the developers during the whole game. I wasn't even angry at the silly Titan Joker finale, partly because yeah I could see the Joker being desperate enough to get Batman to change over himself by doing this, and then being inept at being a hulking goofball. Made sense. Fine. Subversive even. But the Riddler ending was so anti-climactic and tone-deaf to trying to beat 'the Riddler'. Blargh.
@campbellsoup93
@campbellsoup93 4 жыл бұрын
So you wanted to beat him up or something? That's not the point of the Riddler. He's weak. He's not a threat on a physical level, just an intellectual one. You have to beat him with your mind. Figuring out his riddles and obtaining his 'hidden' trophies makes him progressively more unhinged and upset that you're beating him, and causes him to reveal his location piece by piece. By the time you've gotten them all, you've won. He's done for. All that's left is the cleanup and that's the Cops' job. I personally thought it was a perfect way to do it.

@@campbellsoup93 No, I didn't want to beat up the Riddler. (Not until he threatens to kill people to beat Batman in ArkCity anyway.) But he doesn't "reveal his location piece by piece"; the game doesn't set this up at all. He's constantly transmitting to taunt you IN ANY CASE, and after a while you or rather Oracle would track him and send the police, since he's off the island, regardless of what you do or don't do. Solving the puzzles (mostly non-riddles) and getting the trophies does nothing in ArkAsy to advance any plot with him in a meaningful way. If Batman had even had a one or two lines with Oracle along the way explaining the plan, I could have been on board with that, because then it would be set up narratively. (And she masked things so the Riddler couldn't hear their conversations, otherwise he'd know who Batman and Oracle are.)

@Bobby Papoutsis Year One begins when he's 25. Canonically he takes two dips in a Lazarus Pit and gains more youth when he tests the Holy Grail by pouring water from it on a bullet wound. So he comes out of it around 45-50 still with the body of a 25-30 year old. Age isn't an issue for Batman. It's more of an issue for justifying to the public why Bruce Wayne doesn't seem to be aging.
@AAllen-br8it
@AAllen-br8it 5 жыл бұрын
@Bobby Papoutsis Just to clarify, Batman takes his first dip in a Lazarus pit in 1992's Birth of the Demon. I don't remember which book the second one was in, but I do remember the circumstances. The Sensei had just shoved a wooden staff through Bruce's abdomen while a fountain of Lazarus water was nearby so he was forced to use it. The Holy Grail incident was in Batman: The Chalice. All of these books are canon to the post-crisis, pre-new 52 modern continuity (so, the biggest most defining chunk of Batman's lore) And were these not the case, I mean, realistically someone couldn't get themselves to the point of Batman's physical perfection and abilities *anyway.* Let alone do what he does for even a couple years without breaking down, so I'm willing to suspend my disbelief that this guy could do the superhero thing until his mid 40s for the sake of the myth.

@@AAllen-br8it Yeah it totally depends on the continuity. Old continuity had some justifications. New 52 and Rebirth hes not old enough to need them yet. The Miller Earth canon with Year one, DKR, Master Race etc has its own justifications too. He's able to come back at 55 years old and he has issues but can do it for a while. This actually makes sense even look like a wrestler like Goldberg who can still compete in his 50s. he's not a young man anymore, but if you take care of yourself you can still be athletically built and even a fighter at that age. You wouldn't last in the UFC, sure, but a master of martial arts like Batman going up against normal people definitely would. Then he takes a lot of damage over the next couple years till he can't do it at all and he takes a dip in a Lazarus pit and he's like mid 20s again. Is it a cop out? Maybe. But nobody cares when it's Ras Al Ghul so I'm honestly fine with it.

It was 2009, I was 7 years old I saw the trailer for this the year before and I was so excited before that the big Batman game was Lego Batman. My dad got it and I played it and it was the first video game I ever beat and was my introduction into gaming. Since then I’ve beaten all 4 games and Asylum( 7 times) City( 3 times) Origins( 2 times) Knight( 2 times) I’ve played the DLC’s and to this day continue to play all of them. I love this series and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Especially Asylum where it all began on a warm August day in 2009 ❤️

i loved the way the overhead intercom system was when it would do that "Dooo Dah doo doo" before an announcement was made. a small detail but i found that chime of it was really eerie. i agree with that respect for ones enemy aspect from the inmates and patients. its very similar to how even after the red baron was shot down in WWI the united states although losing plenty of planes respected his prowess. on the last point made about being batman or feeling like you were i agree that i really felt like i was batman and in addition to that i felt like i was playing an interactive episode of Batman The Animated Series in particular i felt like i was playing a follow up episode called TRIAL where all if not most prominent villians held batman on trial making the accusation that hes the reason that they exist as villians

I remember when this game came out. At that time superhero games and movies were just awful…except the Nolan Films. My buddy in class got the game and wouldn’t shut up about how cool it was and eventually convinced all of us to get it, and we were so blown away. Makes me miss when games surprised you within how good they were, whereas today games only surprise you with how awful they are

Are you saying that Arkham City's orchestra and chorus wasn't memorable?! How darest thou! All jokes aside, this was a fantastic game. Only reason it's not my second favorite is because Knight was just so much fun to play. But I think you brought up an interesting point with Origins retconning certain events of Asylum. That's one of many reasons I don't think Origins is canon to the Arkham-verse.

As far as Eddie's development in the franchise, it's more about escalation... from just trophies, and riddles, to those things and Riddle Rooms, to finally adding in all the batmobile stuff along with many of the trophies requiring the same sort of focus as the Riddle Rooms of City... besides, what character development were you expecting? His egomania gets more, and more, extreme as time goes on, as a direct result of being bested (even though, just like Joker, he sabotages himself more than anything), which makes sense... he's never going to admit actual defeat, or failure, so I don't see what you are getting at

This game also felt more stylized and more like "Comic book come to life" than the other games Like it didn't focus on realism, it focused on style. Even the menu and HUD were stylized. They lost that in Knight. Origins kept it going tho just for a lil longer.

I think the predator encounters and the atmosphere are the best in the series. And my god the feeling you get in the asylum and the music that plays while you’re doing things is amazing. Also the Scarecrow boss fights...I don’t care what anyone says they’re so amazing. And Killer Croc’s fight is so scary to me, but maybe just cause I’m afraid of water.

Atmosphere - By far, the atmosphere in this game is unlike any other game I've ever played in my 32 years of gaming. Arkham City is probably my favorite in the series, however, the atmosphere in alone in Asylum makes me reconsider that choice every time I play this game. This game completely shattered every single expectation I had going in.

I feel like Riddler did have character development in Origins, but I think he had MORE in Knight. In Knight he really showed his true colors. He showed that it wasn't about challenging but beating him. In a secret room inside the final exam you can find a secret room with a riddle basically you've humiliated and I'll reward you with despair and pain. His boss battle in Arkham Knight wasn't the best but it showed that Riddler broke his own codes by instead of trying to outwit Batman but Finally end him and gives everyone who was feed up with him and finally got to physically beat him up. It makes you really wonder was it Batman's plan along to make Riddler finally face him in person by slowly picking him apart in past games till he finally snapped
